  • An experiment to find out how easy it would be to set up a musical instrument with sympathetic strings so that when you play a particular note, a particular LED lights up, there being an LED for every note in the scale used.
Equipment used: 12 power supply, LED, 1000 Ohm resistor.

The cliffhanger ending is funny stuff, or......... Nah I'm not gunna go into that 😜

Cool stuff. There was this 3d printed harp "tunefast harp" that used 1 string wounded around ball bearings at specific distances so that you only need to tune 1 string, maybe something like that could help reduce the amount of sympathetic strings.

Thank you. I have thought of similar designs, but wouldn't expect it to work in practice based on my experience. If they have got it to work then that's great. Thank you for letting me know about it. I will try to find out more.
With sympathetic strings, the point for me is more that the strings can be tuned to very different relative intervals for different pieces of music.

The only video I have found so far that actually shows the tunefast harp being tuned shows it failing.

When I have tried similar designs and got them to work, it has been when I want to retune all the Cs in two or three octaves with just one machine head, all the Ds with another and so on. It works well with much longer sections of string and the angle that the string goes through when moving from one section to the other to not be a sharp angle. Because pitch varies as a function of tension, you can also join strings of different gauge together and change the pitch of each section by the same amount using one machine head. I haven't built an instrument on that particular principle, just demonstrated on a model that it works.

This video shows a system that allows you to speed up retuning to different scales, without having to change the tension of the strings:

This uses tension retuning to tune 2 sections each of 10 strings. One section of each string is an octave above the other section. You can easily extend this principle to 3 sections of each string or 4 sections of each string.

That's quite amazing. I love it

Yeah, an opto-isolater could drive almost anything. I presume the LED lights at the frequency of the sympathetic string and could be used as an oscillator...

Yes. They could be used that way, or the electrical signal could be taken directly. Thank you for introducing me to the term "opto-isolator". I hadn't heard of the term and knowing that a ready made solution for what I might want to do is freely available will save a lot of time and effort if I choose to go in that direction.

Looks like your making a guitar tuner or something that will visually let you know your hitting your desired notes. If that's the aim then good stuff, if not im a country bumbkin I'm a country bumbkin an I like to watch the clouds go bye, an that is good enough for me. 😂

Yes. That's the idea. For learning to sing or play unusually tuned scales, but also as a light show as part of a live act. Thank you.

If I remember correctly the alternative was to set up the system to give painful electric shocks to one person or more people with who or where, when and for how long the shocks were administered being controlled by singing, intended as a consensual form of erotic play.
