Bowed Sympathetic Instrument Test
This instrument is meant to make it easier to play particular microtonal scales by providing audio feedback about whether you have hit the correct note. The 7 sympathetic (resonating) strings are tuned to the intended scale. You play the other string (melody string) and listen for the response of the sympathetic strings. In theory, you could record the sound of the melody string separately using an electromagnetic pickup and just use that in a recording. I enjoy the sound of the sympathetic strings. The melody string has a range of over three octaves. I have only played slightly over one octave in this video because I am not confident playing the instrument yet.
The intended scale in this video is 1, 12/11, 5/4, 11/8, 3/2, 18/11, 11/6, 2: Tonic, neutral second, major third, half augmented fourth, perfect fifth, neutral sixth, neutral 7th, octave.

    So when you bend the string and it crosses a vertical area where there's not a fret anymore, the string can sustain while changing pitch to where a different fret is? Or does having an additional finger behind the main finger make it like it's "fretless?"

    • @MabInstruments
      @MabInstruments Před měsícem

      The first. The string slips from one section of fret to another without noticeably losing volume. It can make the relationship between the pitch produced and how far you pull the string a bit odd.

    Cool stuff. There was this 3d printed harp "tunefast harp" that used 1 string wounded around ball bearings at specific distances so that you only need to tune 1 string, maybe something like that could help reduce the amount of sympathetic strings.

    • @MabInstruments
      @MabInstruments Před 2 měsíci

      Thank you. I have thought of similar designs, but wouldn't expect it to work in practice based on my experience. If they have got it to work then that's great. Thank you for letting me know about it. I will try to find out more. With sympathetic strings, the point for me is more that the strings can be tuned to very different relative intervals for different pieces of music.

    • @MabInstruments
      @MabInstruments Před 2 měsíci

      The only video I have found so far that actually shows the tunefast harp being tuned shows it failing.

    • @MabInstruments
      @MabInstruments Před 2 měsíci

      When I have tried similar designs and got them to work, it has been when I want to retune all the Cs in two or three octaves with just one machine head, all the Ds with another and so on. It works well with much longer sections of string and the angle that the string goes through when moving from one section to the other to not be a sharp angle. Because pitch varies as a function of tension, you can also join strings of different gauge together and change the pitch of each section by the same amount using one machine head. I haven't built an instrument on that particular principle, just demonstrated on a model that it works.

    • @MabInstruments
      @MabInstruments Před 2 měsíci

      This video shows a system that allows you to speed up retuning to different scales, without having to change the tension of the strings: czcams.com/video/bvkIFgbpaIU/video.html

    • @MabInstruments
      @MabInstruments Před 2 měsíci

      This uses tension retuning to tune 2 sections each of 10 strings. One section of each string is an octave above the other section. You can easily extend this principle to 3 sections of each string or 4 sections of each string. czcams.com/video/Fh_-S8qjIvg/video.html

    Fantastic instrument and performance! I've been experimenting with making a ukulele hurdy gurdy (Hurdele Gurdele?), but I am struggling to get the correct friction from the strings and the disk/belt that makes contact with them. What would you recommend?

    • @MabInstruments
      @MabInstruments Před 3 měsíci

      Thank you. I'd need to see your design to get a better idea, but common problems are not enough rosin, too much rosin, the disk/belt not being made from a material that holds rosin well and the disk/belt being pushed too strongly or not strongly enough against the strings. Some people will also suggest that applying cotton to the strings is important, though that is not a path I have pursued myself, because every time I try applying cotton, it seems to make things worse rather than better.

    • @MabInstruments
      @MabInstruments Před 3 měsíci

      If you are not using strings that are specifically intended to be bowed (for example violin strings or viola strings) then changing to strings that are specifically intended to be bowed may help.

    • @MabInstruments
      @MabInstruments Před 3 měsíci

      If you are using a disk then there are questions of whether the disk meets all of the strings at the same height and what effect holding a string to the fretboard will have. My personal preference in this is to have the plane of the disk more or less parallel to the plane of the strings, having the disk behind the strings and the soundboard in front, though that is not very practical if you are trying to convert an existing ukulele. If you did follow the same pattern as me then I recommend having a raised O shaped section on the disk that engages with the strings and having an adjustment for how much each string pushes against the wheel.

    • @MabInstruments
      @MabInstruments Před 3 měsíci

      This video of mine about an instrument with hurdy gurdy-like wheel and three strings of standard guitar scale length combined with a fretboard may possibly help. My impression is that it's easier to get guitar length strings to work with a wheel than ukulele length strings, but I may be wrong. czcams.com/video/DIPrd30tqQw/video.htmlsi=MKSZhnU1hzxOI1N6

      @@MabInstruments Thank you so much for the generous explanation! I haven't yet bought any rosin, so I'm not able to try it on the nylon ukulele strings. Maybe rosin and cotton would work. The belt does work a little better on my steel string guitar. I will keep experimenting!

    Ok CZcams algorithm, I watched it. Also, if I'm understanding how this dulcigurdy works, it seems like the wheel is causing the drone strings to vibrate perfectly parallel to the frets. This would cause only minimal energy loss. If the axis of vibration was even slightly off parallel, the strings would strike the frets instead of sliding on top of them and the vibrations would be dampened out very quickly. On top of that you have the wheel that is adding energy back into the drone strings to keep them vibrating.
