Biggest Con is finding an “affordable” place to live. That should be #1, 2 and 3! I love Canmore but the premium cost now to afford housing there vs Calgary has gotten too much in recent years. Most of the pros you mentioned (Ski hills, biking trails,..) could also be applied to Calgary, just means an extra hour drive to get to them. Another CON would be employment. I don’t think there are any high paying jobs in the Bow Valley that would allow someone to move here and live comfortably, much less afford to raise a family. Most moving here now are retirees that are cashing out of the city, aren’t worried about a job and have the cash to afford the $1M you need for just a basic townhouse. My advice to anyone considering it is to compare costs of living in Calgary and determine for yourself if saving the hour drive to the mountains is worth it.
Hey, thanks for your opinion on Canmore! You are spot on when saying Canmore is an expensive place to live. I agree with you that Calgary is a fantastic place to live and has lots to offer. However, I do feel it is difficult to compare the two when it comes to outdoor activity. Canmore is really second to none when it comes to premium activity at your front door. Canmore's average income is 33.7% higher than the Canadian average and there are opportunities for work here especially is the hospitality industry. Comparing cost of living to a near by location is definitely something people should consider and Calgary has a ton of opportunity. But it's no Canmore... at least to us! Income may be 33% higher than Canada avg, but that’s still only 72K/year. I don’t see anyone making that salary being able to afford the average sale price in Canmore of ~$1M? I lived in both Canmore and Calgary, and the same outdoor activities are still accessible, it’s just an extra hour drive. Would I prefer to be in Canmore, sure, but living in Calgary means a lot more money left in the account at the end of the month. That can be an important factor for a young people looking to get started in life or raise a family. Town of Canmore should do more to cater to those people with affordable options. i.e. not everything being built needs to be a “Luxury” townhouse or condo. Also bring in an Empty homes tax, like Vancouver and Kelowna. Too many properties there sit empty majority of the year. Everyone’s situation is different, depending where they are at in life, I think the pros/cons of Canmore vs Calgary are pretty obvious.

I think the town of Canmore does want to help make more affordable options. However, the issue is the price of land. It's difficult for developers to create affordable housing when the land value is so high. The empty home tax is something that can be implemented except I don't think it will change anything as the people it will effect typically it is their second home. Calgary is definitely a solid option for young families. I myself am 24 and definitely had to sacrifice a larger home but I wouldn't trade it for anything! We really appreciate your comment!
I agree the empty homes tax won’t do much to create more housing inventory, but at least it will generate some revenue for the town that could be used to make life more affordable for the locals. The wealthy who have these 2nd properties sitting empty does nothing to support the local economy or community. I’d be curious the breakdown of properties being sold. How many are retirees, or being bought as investments or 2nd properties, vs how many are being bought by younger people (under 40) looking to move and raise their family in Canmore? Not sure if those statistics are available but something that would be informative.
So many memories for me. My family got there before the mine closed. We were there as it was dying and then the town Council had an idea. Copy us and our business.
I moved there 3 weeks before the mine closed. I went to the town meeting where people were looking for suggestions to keep the town alive. Someone suggested putting a fence around Canmore and charge people to come in. Seriously !!
It's great to hear that you fell in love with Canmore, Jasper, and Banff! Relocating from Germany to Canada to my understanding can be done. There are some hoops you need to jump through with the government in attaining your PR that are above my knowledge.
