  • Italian Towns Split Over Honorary Citizenship of Benito Mussolini
Italian towns are in splits over honorary citizenship of Benito Mussolini, the country's fascist dictator. Sicilian island of Ustica stripped Mussolini of honorary citizenship by passing a law that only living could be granted such recognition. Italy’s fascist dictator was granted the honour during his 20-year rule. Nearly 8,000 municipalities proclaimed Mussolini an honorary citizen under fascist regime. In 1940s, towns like Naples, Matera & Arezzo revoked his citizenship. He continues to be the honorary citizen of hundreds of Italian towns. The anti-fascist group ANPI has reignited efforts to address the issue. In 2017, members of leftist party Sinistra Italiana called for a census to identify municipalities that had revoked his citizenship. Since then, many towns have revoked the fascist dictator’s citizenship. Dozens of Towns like Adria, Nonantola, Bovezzo, and Troina have revoked his citizenship. In many towns, law prevents the revocation of honorary citizenship from the deceased. Many still back Mussolini’s honorary membership. Former Anzio mayor Candido De Angelis defended Mussolini’s citizenship in 2021 saying “history must be respected”. In 2023, Jesolo’s mayor Christofer De Zotti decided not to revoke it saying "historical act should not be erased".

Mussolini was a great leader, we all know that he made mistakes, but i dont see why the ''citizenship'' of a dead person is so important, he died as an Italian and will always be an italian, even if his ''citizenship'' is changed.
