OMG, I love you whoever you are!!!!! I've been getting nostalgic as I start to maybe admit to some people I might be turning 50, a year ago..lol. Lost track of most of my old "mixed tapes" which us Gen-Xers lived for, and was trying to think of some of my favorite bands. A lot of them got replaced in my brain I guess, with job, kids, mid life crisis and life in general. This is one of those songs that can get stuck in your head for days. It is a catchy song, not overly complex, it reminds me of one of those protest songs from back in the day. I haven't heard this in a long time, it was nice to hear it again. Your lyrical analysis works for me, it makes sense. Take care and stay safe.

Whats going on... is a famous Marvin Gaye song... and they didnt wanna confuse the 2 titles.. so that is why they named it "Whats Up" ...even though it isnt uttered in the song once.. BUT... when you greet some one.. you say "Hey, whats up, whats going on?" ...so they thought it would be a good title !!!

Linda Perry was talented, pretty and her preference was to have a "Girlfriend" as her partner...I think her reference to the world being made up of "This Brotherhood of Man" was an accurate reflection of how she felt about how it was more difficult for a female in the music industry and life in general, to succeed, when she wrote this song...I think you nailed it with your reaction.

Linda didn't allow anything to hold her back and never blamed gender for anything. That's not what this song is about. Back then, we understood that mankind didn't have anything to do with gender or race or anything else. We took responsibility.

Outstanding song ! Outstanding vocal range ! I don't completely agree with her analysis of the song. The "destination" is vague and can be interpreted individually but I think the idea is to prosper in fairness to everyone, as equality is for opportunity.
