Sometimes I look at the Sara Lee Instagram page because of this, and every single comment is a line from this. I actually die laughing.
Of course they did. It’s paid advertising. Every episode there’s a sketch with real product placement. James McAvoy did the Charmin focus group, ScarJo did the Olive Garden ad, etc. And obviously it paid off. People are still commenting and watching this video months and months later. It keeps Sara Lee’s name out there

That’s interesting and thanks for sharing cause I didn’t see that, but my guess would be they’re pretending they didn’t know to get even more press. Since 2016 SNL has cut two commercial breaks per episode to make way for more sketches but the trade off is one product-integrated sketch per episode that is paid for by the company mashable.com/2016/04/26/snl-less-commercials-more-branded-content/

Often times, when brand names & products are used in parodies and jokes (esp. those that may paint the brand in a negative light), the brand is not actually involved at all and they have not given permission. In some other cases, there are advertising agreements between two parties that do not require pre-approval of the details surrounding the product placement... as long as it’s clear that the brand is not actually behind or endorsing the message (which is usually inherent when it comes to spoofs).
I have no trouble believing Sara Lee had no idea that this sketch was being made. This certainly wouldn’t be the first time a brand/company was caught off guard by an SNL sketch. I can think of at least one company that made them delete the video from online platforms.
Sounds like an excellent marketing scheme to me. 10/10, would choose thirsty bread over sara lee facts.
