  • In this episode we take a ride from Market Square to Opera in the new ForCity Smart Artic X54 tram. The vehicle is tested with passengers under route number 4S in November 2021. Later the trams will be used in the first light rail route in the Helsinki region, route 550 (Raide-Jokeri).
The tram is procured by HKL and manufactured by Škoda Transtech in Kajaani. The light rail vehicle is 34 meters long and it is bidirectional. The total passenger capacity is 214.

Wow that tram 🚋 (by a Czech engineering company Skoda Transportation a.s. and it should not be confused with now-separate Czech car manufacturer Skoda Auto or the former parent Skoda Works) in Helsinki, Finland 🇫🇮 sure looks fabulous. I have never seen any trams like that before in my entire life. That reminds me of LUAS trams (which are operated by a French company Transdev, under tender from Transport Infrastructure Ireland) from my home city of Dublin, Ireland 🇮🇪.

These might carry the Czech name on them but are completelly enginereed and built in Finland by (Skoda) Transtech and based on the framework of the original Artic tram. 😊

Tram looks great, but who the hell designed those tramstops with curved boarding islands that are not parallel to the tracks? At the very beginning (0:32), you'll see how dangerous and uncomfortable it is for the lady to step out of the tram, as she has to make a long stride. An elderly person or a kid may easily step or fall into that dangerous gap or even injure themselves. And then, instead of just rolling with the stroller out, she has to bend down and carry the baby carriage over that gap.
Great tram, but a badly designed stop. Hopefully they'll fix this ASAP.

While the boarding island is certainly outdated(I think the island in question is actually only used by museum tram rides nowdays), these trams were also not built for the dimensions of the old tram lines in Helsinki city center, but newer suburban lines. These were just test drives conducted using the old infrastructure.

A single two zone ticket costs €2.80. You can pay onboard via a fare card or there is an app. Complete fare info at: www.hsl.fi/en/tickets-and-fares

You must have a valid ticket when boarding. There are random ticket checks, and if you don't have a valid ticket when checked, you will receive a penalty fare of 80€.

So the tram is beautiful, but is the tram infrastructure? The rails and the spiderweb above? i dont think so. Say no to trams.
