Bringing a Topolino Back on The Road (Carburetor, Ignition, Loom and a Disaster)

  • This little Fiat 500C Topolino didn't give much pleasure to her owner lately. Numerous half-hearted repair attempts left carburetor, ignition and loom in a sorry state, making it a prime candidate for an afternoon at the roadside.
    But now it's back!

      Thanks a ton, Matteo. Humbly, I think so too, but people seem to expect Alfa and Porsche from me, the views are nowhere near to the numbers I hoped for.

    I ran a green 1953 LHD 500C (Registration SXL93) for a couple of years back around 1968. It was a devil for cooking its brakes every now and then and once let me down in the middle of nowhere on a Sunday afternoon when the fabric propshaft universal joint ripped apart. Other joys were hanging the car by the cylinder head for a week only to belatedly discover a domed stud nut in a waterway covered in gunge that was stopping the head from coming away from the block. It served me well though, but driving from north London to South Shields with motorway only for the first third was a drag. Even on the motorway the best I could achieve was 55mph. Happy days.

      Yeah, cars of the fifties … it’s breathtaking how quickly technology improved from the sixties on. Till then, I feel every journey was an adventure.

    I particularly enjoy that your goal might be to closely observe what has been done, compared to what the engineers and the factory designed and built, and then restore to the original specification. Some of the fixes were ingenious and i often ask why they were done instead of a proper repair, like wiring to the brake light. It worked, and why do it? And, when you fire it up, seeing how well it runs proves the original builders did know what they were doing. A lovely tribute.

      Thanks, mate. That’s very kind feedback.
      You know, modern day workshops and classic car workshops are two entirely different species. It just doesn’t make sense to give a car like that to a mechanic who’s drilled to get things done the most efficient and cheapest way.

    Loved the video. I’ve seen quite a few negative views on soldering terminals, versus crimping, on the basis of the copper wiring breaking where the solder finishes. Soldering and heat shrinking is my goto in many cases!

    • @maciejjarosz6011
      @maciejjarosz6011 Před 2 lety

      That's true, soldered cables are much more likely to break off. Crimping is the way to go. Of course, provided connector was crimped correctly which unfortunately is not always the case.

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  Před rokem

      Thanks for the feedback, guys.
      It’s actually a hybrid of crimping and soldering that I’m doing, which means I dip the cable end into the soldering acid, then crimp it to the cable lug and then let some tin solder pour into the connection.

      Interrupters are increasingly becoming a forgotten technology. I just did it in a friend’s 911 recently, mind you an automotive engineer, and he asked me “what’s it actually for?”
      The music tempted me a lot. I tried it in a pre-study of the viper green 911 film and looked for an opportunity to use it ever since.

    Wonderful video of the Topolino ,beautifully done....I think you could run without the brass filter in the carb if you have at least one inline filter....looks very similar to the one in my Lancia Appia twinchoke Webber. Are you doing more videos on the Topolino?..

      Yeah, I think the inline filter will do the job. I’ve actually not planned to continue the Topolino story. It’s a customer car and unless it’s going to break again in any interesting fashion, there’s not gonna be more.

    You can make the carby cover fuel filter with some brass gauze mesh 400 or so. You need to make a little cylinder of mesh by soldering two opposing sides of a little square piece together. Only thing to watch out for is the mesh will wick up the solder very quickly so you have to be quite swift with the iron.

    • @johnsherborne3245

      EBay is your friend, I found a fabulous Swiss company who make screen printing stainless steel mesh, it solders easily enough if you flux it with phosphoric acid. I wanted a screen for my 928, the nylon replacement was a stupid price, and had failed. Why pay so much for an inferior product. The stainless will last longer than the car.

    Probably as close as I'll ever get to the real model. Is this the "little mouse"? In the early 1960's a plastic model manufacturer made a plastic kit version of this or very similar fiat with the front hood engine and fenders removed. The remaining body was set behind a large V8 engine and onto the rear of a long rail dragster, trying to achieve 160mph / 250 km hr from a standing start over 1/4mi / .4km. Narragansett Bay
