Damn, you must've read my mind. I've been over here struggling with Toposolids all weekend.

From what I`v seen , toposolids are overall a step backward, especialy because the missing pads

Hi Milos. There IS a workaround for the (possibly annoying) 2 things about topsolids. Both workarounds entail using either ACAD or Civil3D...
    1. "Split toposolids - can't be rejoined". Solution: Save a 3D view (only show ALL the split toposolids to re-join) into a DWG file. Clean up the "splitting polylines" in ACAD, SaveAs a new DWG as a new "surface". Create new toposolid from this modified DWG.
    2. "Make a toposolid by face from mass - the toposolid can't be edited as a normal toposolid". Solution: Kind of the same thing. Save 3D view into a DWG file. Re-import into Revit, then create new toposolid from imported DWG.

Very professional comparison. Compact overview, thank you! And as always Autodesk made toposolids a lot better in Revit 2025, looking forward to your next comparison ;-)

Shaft/vertical openings also work for cutting toposolids

Topo surace is a sheet and topo solid is justva floor with a different name

A problem that nobody mentions is the graphics. With toposurfaces you can see the profile lines on elevations and sections, which adds depth and shape to your site, whereas in toposolid there is no profile visualization option and it shows as a flat surface in technical drawings (except for plans with contours of course). The only workaround is supposedly enabling folding lines (+ambient light if you need to) as a guide and then drawing detail ones where the profile is right, but takes a lot of time + it's view specific... I don't understand why such a basic feature is not added. I know toposolids are based on floors which don't have profile lines (as they never needed to), but didn't they think to make this exception for toposolids?
Another issue in graphics is the flat shading. Well, that's more of a minor one, as most of the time you are going to use Revit for technical exports, but still remains an annoying feature sometimes when you need to show shading, and your site looks like plastic...
It's such a shame because, for me overall, toposolids are a step forward.

Topologies are perfect in my opinion, I could do so so much with them in my projects that I couldn't do previously especially in terms of having earth in places above /below building that should not be cut, however though. Buildings pads were truly great, and I wish they bring them back into toposolids, so so many scenarios would be so much easier with simple building pads

ive been creating in place families under the toposolid category, so to keep track and be able to find the cut later for adjustment

Well, I was very enthusiastic from the feature at the beginning... After trying it, half the cuts I've tried failed and gave me errors, it's badly implemented and some methods don't make any sense at all... Let's say I have a basement with foundation walls, the floor cuts the toposolid but I still have to create a void to delete the remaining part of topography above the floor... Painful... I'm wondering who is the lunatic in charge of developing those kinda tools 🤦🏻

Sometimes I think they release underdeveloped features just to have something better to bring on the next release. Its a product marketing engineering. Like I take something out, you feel frustrated. I bring it back, you thank me LOL

With toposolid we can't calculate the stuffed of the build. But with toposurfeces yes, we can.

The material’s UV mapping are a serious issue with toposolids : instead of planar mapping vertically you get something which is mapping perpendicular to each triangle and the result is chaotic. Any solution to this?

I had a previous project where I was trying to 3d print a topography for a project, but struggled with the model as it was literally just a surface with no depth.
Does this mean that if we have a topo in Revit 2024, we can export that into a solid geometry that we can export into a stl to 3d print?

to me toposurface is extrimely most precise than toposolid... they should have offered both in the 2025...is a pain honestly

I guess topo surfaces and topo solids are good for architectural civil site plans. But in civil engineering, Revit surfacing is not the way to go. For more accuracy and tying into survey along with all the other things. cut and fill reports planning profiles you should be using civil 3-D. In my opinion, topography should not be shown in architecture or structural or any other discipline for that matter. Your civil site plans should not be done by an architect. It should be done by a civil engineer.
