  • Uppsala is a town just north of Stockholm. It's home to the biggest church in Scandinavia, the oldest university in the Nordics...and the graves of the descendants of the Old Norse gods.
    Uppsala is a vibrant student town with a rich cultural life. The University of Uppsala is famous worldwide, and it’s the oldest university in the Nordics. The university was founded in 1477, and during the Great Power Era in the 17th and 18th century, the town of Uppsala was among the top European places for higher education.
    In the Vendel Era, roughly 550 AD and up until the Viking Age, Uppsala became a center for trade and wealth was accumulated there. During that time the Royal Mounds of Uppsala were raised. People believe that these mounds were dedicated to Odin, Thor and Frej - or possibly three mythological kings of Sweden. As I visit the historical site of Old Uppsala (Gamla Uppsala), I dive into questions of how much truth there is to the Old Norse myths.
    This video also explores Uppsala Cathedral, St Erik's Well, Uppsala Castle, and Uppsala University. Special attention is also given to one of the students, and later principal, of Uppsala University: Carl von Linné, Carl Linnaeus, a world-famous botanist.
    The botanical gardens of Uppsala is another majestic sight, and it's fitting that we end the video in the legacy of Carl von Linné, in the University Botanical Garden.

    • @annemaria5126
      @annemaria5126 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Sorry, fingerslip....dna in me. It might have to do with the Frisians? They lived/live down into the province of Utrecht. The north of the Netherlands was inhabited by the Frisians, down to the great rivers Rhine, Waal, Maas, west till the Northsea and even southwards down into France (Nord Pas de Calais). The higher dryer woodlands in the east were a mixture of eastern immigrants especially after the great folks-movements during the second half of the first millennium and after the romans left these grounds.

    Linneaus came from the Netherlands. A person can only study anything when names are given. So that was Adam's task according to the bible. And so did Linneaus with plants. Then a teacher can teach students, scientists can explore, write down their findings to be read by others, far away in place and time. Discussions are possible and arguments a must. But the first step towards knowledge is namegiving.

      Yes. Read it. A wonderfull peace of 'google'?-translated swedish into dutch. Anyway, he was swesish, but there was certainly a string bond with the Netherlands. People moved a lot in the past, though the roads were not excellent, 'hotels' were not well operated, dangers along the way everywhere and all kinds. And allthough there was/were no internet and emails and phones, they communicated over time and distances. They knew everything what was going on anywhere. Remarkable.
