    A solution I have used for bolting through acrylic is to drill an over sized hole that will accept a piece of flexible tubing the same length as the thickness of the acrylic. This will prevent to screw threads from cracking the acrylic in the hole. It can also absorb some of the bolt clamping forces so the acrylic doesn’t. Too much clamping pressure especially in low quality acrylic can result in ‘crazing’ which is spiderweb micro cracking in the acrylic will will propagate throughout and eventually cause failure. Some solvent chemicals will also cause crazing. Again size the holes in the frame and acrylic to allow for differential thermal movement.

    • @typxxilps
      @typxxilps Před 9 měsíci +1

      the whole acrylic window has been in vain cause he had forgotten about the traffic regulations or MOT aka TÜV in germany
      He needs to buy a window with t type certification for the purpose to be used in a vehicle participating in public traffic.
      His solution is already illegal and the police would stop him and prevent that he could drive any further with the camper due to all the risks involved hurting someone else which would require a repair on the spot they have stopped him or a trailer for the camper. Terrible expensive idea.
      Unfortunatelly he has already destroyed the old windows where a proof sign had been which is needed to get a spare part. I bet this is also an EU wide regulation meanwhile.

    As always super happy to see a new post from the Post Apocalyptic Inventor! Those variable capacitors do bring back memories from when as a kid I dismantled and old Braun AM/LW/KW radio that had some minor issues. Later in my electronics experiments also modified that variable capacitor to have less plates to reduce the capacitance. That all worked, but now in hindsight it was probably stupid to butcher a radio that is now maybe a highly sought after item, with clear Dieter Rams design influence. Wisdom comes with the years, and fully agree keeping up with the Joneses (or here Jansens) is leading nowhere or wont bring happiness. But luckily watching these videos do!

      @@hauptuhrdotnetblog6700 thank you for this insight. We should indeed not only look at monetary value stuff 'could have' or what could have been lost by messing around with them, but also at the skills and knowledge we gain with just tinkering (at any age!). That is indeed of great value and will bring one forward. Just try stuff! With those skills e.g. now repair stuff for family and friends, also broken items before bringing them to the thrift store. Those shops simply can't afford to repair everything or simply don't have enough volunteers to clean and repair everything they get. This also learned me to prefer low-tech over high-tech solutions, since they are usually way easier to repair. (paradoxically, I have a job in high-tech...)

    Car windshields are tinted at the edges to protect the glue holding them to the metal frame and transition to no tint with dots of tint. This allows a gradual temperature difference to prevent stress on the glass and glue. You could try something similar as window tint is pretty cheap. Or just paint the edges with a mesh stencil. I'm not sure if that will work with the aluminum being held with bolts drilled through the plastic. Another option is to make slightly larger holes for the bolts and use something like a bit of tubing like nylon air line as a bushing between the bolt and aluminum and plexiglass plastic by putting the bolts through the tubing and then through the mounting holes. The nylon is pretty stiff but should be more flexible to accommodate the temperature variations of the metal.

    My pickup truck is almost 27 years old (dodge ram). It has over 200,000 miles on it (about 327,000 km) and is not totally rusted even in Michigan winters with salt on the roads. I have it rust proofed most years. It runs fine. It is not new but I will likely keep it for another year or two. My 2008 Saturn VUE has a rusted frame and we will be replacing it soon. My "old" microwave was made in Japan in 1987, the year I purchased it. The home we bought 5 years ago came with a microwave oven so we use both. The Japanese made microwave oven still has the original light bulb. I have never had ANY issues with it. My electric oven was made in the USA. It is a 1998 Maytag and other than repairing the up/down button on the timer it has worked flawlessly for over 25 years. I would say that in general I don't replace things until I really have to.

    25:30 Tip: not everything has to be smaller in a camper. Allow yourself the luxury of a regular sized cutting board, it’s so much more convenient and doesn’t take up significant space. In my opinion, anyway - I’m not a kitchen snob, but tiny cutting boards annoy the hell out of me.

    The quad is sweet! You should get a set of "Ape Hanger" handlebars for it, that way you don't have to bend so far forward on it and it would look sick AF in combination with the banana seat and sissy bar.

    I watch your videos and listen to your good commentaries on modern society! Those variable capacitors (Hopt?) were also used in Norwegian radios the same era (Tandberg and Radionette) and suffer the same way, much work to dis- and assemble to clean stiff lubricant. I work on many radios, but hate dial string work!

    I always cleaned off the old hardened lubricant with denatured alcohol. Even if the shaft is stuck fast, that works in about 85% of the repairs I had to do. I used automatic transmission fluid or electric organ oil to relube the areas that needed it.
    I detested having to re-string the dial cords. They were always a real hassle. If you have Cuttyhunk fishing line or cod line, they both work well for replacement dial cord. Check the diameter of the old cord first though. There were at least 5 different diameters of dial cord, plus the really old brass drive belts and the flat fabric drive belts. (I was lucky to obtain a hundred or so assorted fabric belts, as they are not obtainable any more.)

  • @mustafasfleas7342

    The dial cord as used in the Loewe ST-250 is nothing more than "Fly-Fishing" line. Stopping into your favorite sporting goods store that caters to the fly fishermen will yield a wide verity of cord diameters and tinsel strengths, at very modest price.

    I watched this last night and was thinking about your tuner repair this morning. I remember seeing a high end receiver, though I cannot remember the brand but it had a spring on the tuning string. That part of the system was a simple system of pulleys, most of it was inline along the indicator dial but they felt it necessary to keep that under tension. Perhaps the next time you come across a tuner you could terminate the ends in a loop and stretch a spring across them? Just offering this up as an idea.

    I love your channel and endeavours to make people think more carefully about the consequences of our Capitalist existence. I am working hard on repairing my own camper trailer which is only 2007 vintage. It has a mechanical wind up system to raise the roof and the cables are stretched and the telescoping roof supports were bent. Now I am ditching the orthodoxy of having the auxiliary “house” battery in the camper, as the car alternator has 110 amp alternator I figured I’d put that to better use than just charging the starter battery. I installed a 50 amp DC to DC charger whose source is the starter battery and use the excess amps of the alternator to charge the house battery. If the battery was in the camper it would miss out on a charge every time we went off exploring whilst camping. I connect it to the camper via a couple of cables with Anderson plugs. Today I installed a 200w solar panel on the car roof which connects to the DC to DC charger to keep the batteries (it also will charge the starter battery) topped up in case we don’t go exploring for a few days. This way one 100 amp/hr battery is sufficient for camper lighting/pump and charging iOS devices.
