When Steve Jobs destroyed the stage with his other digital innovation, the EWI

  • Yeah, no, it's just the incredible Michael Brecker in one of the earliest appearances on the EWI! Tottaly on fire and one of the first recordings live on an EWI. Innovator, visionary, extraordinair artist seems to humble for him. And he does look like Steve Jobs :) . Here, get THAT groove by Steps Ahead with a Michael Brecker totally on fire on the tune "Beirut".
For those who wouldn't know, he plays an EWI, which is an electronic wind instrument. It has a keyboard and a pedal that controls pitch bending, so it's kind of like an electric guitar or saxophone, but with more options for expression. The solo itself is super innovative and uses a lot of harmonic complexity. Enjoy this EWI solo transcription.

Yeah no, ... it's not Steve Jobs of course, but just countering what would be the top comment otherwise, which is probably the most stupid CZcamsr move to ever make in history. But hey, is Michael Brecker anything less than the Steve Jobs for the saxophone and EWI? 😁
Joking aside, this is such an incredible solo. The motivic development around that exotic scale that where this tune "Beirut" is based on, together with plenty of pop and jazz idiom is so engaging!
Which other EWI solo's (Michael Brecker or others) deserve it to get transcribed?
By the way, we have a new online school demystifying improvisation for ya. If you feel like getting better in soloing and jazz, check it out here ➡: www.sharpelevenmusic.com

Thanks so much for transcribing this one!! One of my favourite solos/tune ! ❤
It's strange though that I really seem to hear Beirut in D instead of E... I remember practicing the vibe solo along the recording when I was a student, and I'm almost sure it was in D.
Could you transcribe Brecker's take on "In a sentimental mood" from the same concert ? It is such an amazing version of the tune !!!
Thanks for the great work !! 🙏🏻

Brecker was definitely part of my formative listening years. I didn't always get it, but I was always blown away. He was a true master of the instrument and we lost him way too soon. Thanks for transcribing and sharing this gem.

Just found this transcription! Great! After all this time many great improvisers have emerged but I don’t know if any have quite got the “juice” Brecker had. Developing any idea, making the outside sound inside, technical mastery, complex harmony, and dirty greasy soul. As advanced as he was his solos never ever failed to speak to me on a visceral instinctual level.

Oh, Beirut. I loved it. Thanks Jorre! BTW: they are transforming a rock progression (I -> VI -> VII 7) into something else by leaving out the I during the entire solo. That's what I call a held back climax...
