  • This is a lecture on the FCA 41TE transaxle mechanical and electrical system. In this video I explain the mechanical components and discuss powerflow in each gear. I also show how the gearset is constructed and laid out. I discuss the operation of the electronic system, including the inputs and solenoid outputs. Quicklearn, and clutch adapts (CVI) is also discussed. This video is intended to teach a student or a technician that's new to automatic transmissions the operation of this simple transmission. This is the first transmission that the students go through in the class, because it's easy, basic, and relatively quick to go through.

    This professor appears to be a genius - how in the world did he ever learn all the workings of automotive science??? Certainly, persistence would be a factor! What an excellent opportunity to learn that he, and SIU give to the average fool? Certainly, engineering greats such as Walter Chrysler and his gang of engineers must have been very persistent! I have read a biography of Walter Chrysler which was quite amazing! He really was perhaps one of the most accomplished efficiency experts of all time! Thanks again for all your excellent presentations!!!

    Absolutely aaamazing engineering!!! I bet the first time they tried this trans out ... they had some serious problems! They must have been very persistent! As Ben Franklin said, " there is no such thing as genius, only persistence!"

    I have to finish watching this video to be able to rebuild this Trans. understands how 41TE works, from mechanical to electronic and diagnostic . I got 07 PT Cruiser No R only, manually shift low gear all good. Now I know what I'm looking for, at least pay attention to Input Drum ( Reverse Clutch ). At least Solenoid Pack has nothing to do with R. Thank You

    i love your videos. I just wish I lived close enough to take your class. Do you know if it's possible to obtain the 41te transmission temp through the obd port? I have a 2006 41te that doesnt work with witech and I think only works with DRB3. If I had one I would sniff the signal through a logical analyzer or oscilloscope. Or maybe the temp is only available to the TCM? If you have any advice I'd appreciate it. Kind regards

      You can get trans temp with an aftermarket scanner. I know our Snap-on Solus does it. I'm sure the Autels will read trans temp as well. I don't think the generic scan tools will show much for trans data. I also wish the witech would work on earlier vehicles as well, but the aftermarket does a pretty good job with Chrysler data, so at least there's that! Thanks for the compliments!

    I just bought a 2005 T&C with 135K miles - (no major rust) but this T&C is the first T&C that I have owned that has a highway ratio gearset- (which I love for the milage but, it tends to sing or whine after 45 MPH and the whine seems to go away after 75MPH - is that singing or whining tend to be a normal characteristic for that highway ratio gearing? or would it be more likely a loose or worn out ring gear carrier bearing problem? I have checked the endplay of the drive gear and transfer shafts, and they appear perfect. The Chrysler dealer told me that if it is not too loud, just ignore it. I have never had this "singing" sound in any of my previous T&C's - they have all been totally quite running - as my uncle Trevor said of his Bently, "35 MPH and all you hear is the wind."

    If I were to rebuild one of my spare 41TE transmissions out a LXI T&C that I took to 345,000 miles with no major engine or trans. issues - could your team Dyno test it??? I could make a donation to the school...?

    I’ve got a 41te with hard shift into and out of 3rd gear, new oil/filter and new shift solenoid didn’t make any difference.????

  • @Underappreciatedclassics

    Hi there, I have a 1991 Chrysler New Yorker fifth Avenue, it has the the 41-TE. Between 25-45 miles per hour at times in down shifting the car will jump into limp mode when it’s been driven for awhile and the electronic vehicle information center or (EVIC) cluster will say “Low transmission pressure” and will go into service limp mode (stuck in second gear) and will remain in limp mode until it’s restarted or let sit to cool down for a bit. I’ve been told my silonoid pack may be going out but im wondering if you know any other possible things to check. I’ve already replaced my speed input sensors

      There are pressure switches that close at about 20 psi. If there's a bad switch or bad connection, it will set a code and go into limp mode. It's possible that you have a bad connection or bad solenoid. Many solenoid connectors and pigtails have been replaced to fix those codes. Many solenoids as well. That's a very early unit, so there were many updates that occurred in about 1995. I would start by inspecting the harness going into the transmission really well. Then, use the smooth end of a drill bit the same size as the pins (sorry, I cannot remember the size) and check to see if all the female sockets have good tension in the transmission connector.

    Perhaps I missed this but, I did not see a explaination of how the lock up works - I had read in another write up on the 41TE that stated that underdrive is actually lockup mode - True?

      The converter clutch is located within the torque converter - not the gearset. It can be engaged in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears.

    Hi! Thanks for video.
    Can you recommend some replacement of original oil Mopar ATF+4 for 41TE?
    I have no way to buy it.
    Maybe, Valvoline ATF+4 or Ravenol ATF+4?

    • @siuautomotive
      @siuautomotive  Před 2 lety

      Yes, anything with the atf+4 label should be the compatible fluid

    41tes stalls out engine when put in drive or reverse. Clutches or torque converter issue? Shifts through all gears perfectly fine. Help

    • @siuautomotive
      @siuautomotive  Před 2 lety

      Must be a torque converter issue. It could also be a worn valve body solenoid switch valve or plugged cooler. Trans clutch issues won’t stall the engine since when you are in gear at a stop nothing in the trans is rotating anyway. But the torque converter is another story.

    Great video, I am curious to know your thoughts, I have a PT Cruiser gt with a Ultradrive 41TE automatic in it and im curious to know if you think it would be possible to work with an Hyper-9 electric motor. your thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

    • @siuautomotive
      @siuautomotive  Před 2 lety +2

      We actually have an electric pt cruiser in the program. Our setup uses the manual trans. I guess the 41te would work if you don’t need it to shift. In default (limp mode), the trans has park, neutral, reverse, and 2nd gear.

    These gears cannot cross in the middle, some one is going to have to reach around to the other side.
