    I impulsively bought one of these a few months back for 70 with the original box. It's a nice compromise between its prewar and postwar counterparts.

      Nice. It’s a quality piece, just last night I was running it and it was pulling 19 cars. Not too shabby!

    Great score Dave! I’m very glad you got this because I’m really getting into MPC era Lionel engines and rolling stock the past few years. The best part is, is that they are standing the test of time like the Post War trains because they too were made in the U.S.A.

    Hay Dave, enjoyed the video. I've had good results using two wide flat bladed screw drivers as wheel pullers. Just align them across from each other and twist your wrist in opposite directions. Using two screw drivers applies eaqual pressure to keep the wheel from binding on the axel. Works best on axels that have been oiled. They usually pop right off. I use a small set of c clamp type vice grip pliers to press them back on.

    • @dagryffynhobby
      @dagryffynhobby  Před rokem

      Thanks. I personally haven’t had good luck with that method but maybe the pieces were too stuck. I like the idea of the c clamp vice grip. I might try that. I do have some engines that need repair, so maybe before I buy pullers and a press, I’ll try this out. Thanks!

    Many years ago my father described standing on a bridge over the NYNH&H Shore Line and watching the locomotive WOBBLE along underneath. The previous owner of your 1656 probably worked hard to duplicate that effect. The short wheelbase may have something to do with it: my 6-18610 0-4-0 wore out a side rode (replacement parts were available). That Rock Island version was my first loco after getting into O gauge--the cheapest steam loco I could find on the bidding site at the time.

      I never thought of that! Maybe someone made it run like that. That’s a good point. The real world is imperfect.
      I’m still loving this engine, pulls and runs fantastic.

    The 1656 looks to have the same or similar motor assembly as others like the 1655 engine. But I noticed the most unique thing with that motor is it has the direct double reduction deal. Motor to 2 larger gears, then smaller center gear on those to each wheel. This is similar to the MarX double reduction gear design mostly used on their 1666, but in no way interchangeable... If you have the patience, you can have some kind of brace on the motor frame and carefully use a squeeze tool yo can move those bent axles back by evening up those wheels wobble. Squeezing in the wobble that is moving out to move it in, frame to wheel edge. DO NOT press on the wheel flange, just little on the wheel edge to balance it out.

    • @dagryffynhobby
      @dagryffynhobby  Před rokem

      Interesting! I think I tried to carefully bend the wheels back in and just ended up making it worse. One of these days I’ll get the proper tools.

    You can see how underside of Passenger cars are relatively scale sized 0-4-0 Switcher. I'd rather have a small locomotive full-size than a squished condensed version of a big engine. The steam turbine was a humongous locomotive and they having the same size as a Hudson

  • @StephenCarlBaldwin
    @StephenCarlBaldwin Před 2 lety +1

    That's quite the bargain -- looks great (I quibble with the whitewall tires because I've never seen a switcher that had them but that's a minor point) but otherwise an amazing performer given that you didn't even have to open it up for a complete servicing.

    • @dagryffynhobby
      @dagryffynhobby  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah the whitewalls are a bit much. When I eventually take it apart, maybe I’ll do something about them. It’s really performing very well.

    @scpvrr Před 2 lety

    I think you did well Dave. It’s quite the puller. Question, did that tender come with that particular engine originally? I’m thinking no but who knows. Have a good weekend and hope alls getting better with the Covid.

    Is $40 too cheap? Not if it works it ain't! 😃
    Nice aquisition Dave! 0-4-0 switchers didn't get to romp on the main lines all that often, but it DID happen from time to time and it looks good on your main line! I'd ballast the tender a bit to steady it down but otherwise it looks like you've got a good piece of gear for the money.

    • @dagryffynhobby
      @dagryffynhobby  Před rokem

      I agree! $5 isn’t too cheap either if it functions the way it’s supposed to.
      I added weight to the tender, but I think a bit too much. I’ll take a little out next time I work on it.

    • @dagryffynhobby
