My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We saw over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

Don't let it bother you too much. Here in California the BAR was called after I repaired a customer's car. It came in with a misfire and I tracked it down to a burned insulator on one of the spark plug wires. I sold him a new set of spark plug wires and the customer thanked me by calling BAR claiming I ripped him off even though it ran great when he left. BAR inspected the spark plug wires and then came to see me to explain why I had replaced them. They said they ohmed out the wires and there was nothing wrong with them. I asked them if they had noticed the hole burned through the side of one of the insulators. All I got in response was "oh" and they walked out the door. You just can't win them all when it comes to some customers.

Ohm checking plug wires is a waste of time in my opinion. Hook an adjustable spark tester on the end and run an incandescent test light up and down the wire to see leaks. You could also bust out the scope and WOT the engine and see the turbulence in the spark line disappear. One thing to watch out for if you see a hole blown out the side of the plug boot is that there is a reason that happened. It could be worn out plugs, lean air fuel mixture from vacuum leaks or injector issues causing high KV from the ignition coil. Spark has to go somewhere and if it is easier to pop outside the combustion chamber it will.

I owned a Firestone tire and repair shop for several years. Initially, I joined the BBB, but in time I learned that it was just a pain in the ---. Every time a customer complained to the BBB I was required to submit a report to them explaining our side of the story (there's always two sides). They invariably ruled in our favor but this never made the customer any happier, so I eventually arrived at the conclusion that I was spending money for a membership that was just causing me extra work. I withdrew our membership and it never affected my business one iota.

I can see this being an honest mistake in areas where people routinely set stuff out by the trash cans for people to take. I worked in apartment maintenance when I was in college and everything that tenants had abandoned went out to the curb. After graduation, nearly every rental in the city had stuff out by the curb for people to take because the students didn't think it cost-effective to ship their cheap Walmart furniture anywhere.

I feel you on these car batteries! Paid over $200 for a battery for my wife's Tahoe in mid 2020. That battery died and failed load testing in about mid 2022, and was then replaced under warranty by Autozone. Fast forward to 2 months ago, THAT battery also failed suddenly, but this time Autozone would not replace it again under warranty free, because they go by the ORIGINAL sell date of the battery in 2020 (only has 3-year free replacement) and no pro-rate adjustment! So guess who had to pay now another $200 plus (inflation) for a battery? Maybe it's just me, but a 58 years old I definitely remember buying automotive batteries that said if there were a 6 year battery, they lasted at least 8 plus years!...but apparently no more.😒

I paid $60 for my last car battery from walmart in 2021. No problems and it's still going strong. Batteries are basic technology and almost all are made by one of 2 companies. If your batteries are failing prematurely, there's another reason. Either the car is not being used much and has a parasitic drain or there is a charging issue. Or, if you get one that's been sitting on the shelf a long time before being sold you can also have an issue. Batteries are kind of like bread--they go bad if you don't use them and they don't store well. Lead acid batteries do not do well if they're not used regularly and kept at near full charge.

I worked for a company that sold expensive custom test equipment. Stuff ranged from 60k$ to 110k$. We had a customer return 2 pieces of equipment for repair through some middleman that we had never heard of before. We ripped it apart to diagnose it and sent a quote. Didn't hear back despite a half dozen emails and phone calls. After a 18 months, we tossed the parts into a scap heap. Two and a half years later, they called looking for it and were ready to sue when I informed them it had been scrapped. Thankfully (and despite a corporate policy that we weren't supposed to keep old emails), I was able to show them that I had repeatedly contacted their middleman but was ignored.

I can certainly understand what you have gone through. I owned an electronic shop from 1990 to 2002. I had a number of old TVs, VCRs, and old radios that were abandoned. A customer brought in an old TV once. After contacting him about the cost of repairs, he informed me to just trash it. Some months went be and one day I get a somance from small clames court. As it happened in this case, I had all the paperwork on his so-called new TV along with our CCTV cameras. When I showed up, he was surprised, to say the least. He tried to convince the judge that his TV was only a few weeks old and was under complete warranty. After showing the video I had of his TV, the judge dismissed the case. That was not the end. A few days later, I received a letter from an attorney saying Mr. So and so was seuing me. After showing his attorney the case where he had lost his first battle, his attorney dropped the case. I completely understand your situation. Some customers can be total yo yos. One more reason I got out of the business... You were absolutely right. I feel for you in this day in age.

Customer is NEVER Right! - Make the receipt and fine print always favor the business over the customer.
That may sound harsh, but you can always cover parts and labor longer at your discretion because you run the business.
For example the receipt may say 30 days on parts/ labor for that specific repair but you own the business, if you want to warranty the repair longer or cover something else you can.
The reason for the fine print is protection from that one customer! The other 99% you probably wouldn't even need the fine print at all. When you get that one customer, you need that fine print and that signature! Sadly there are more and more unethical scammers out there today and you need to protect your business more than ever.
Laws vary State to State when it comes to repair work and the warranty so check with a lawyer or proper party first.

Happy birthday. Will guess that ahoole who complained about the mower had bought it at the big box store. Then took it home, ignored the big red sticker saying you have to put oil into it, on top of the motor, covering the entire top, ignored the sticker on the pull handle saying you got to put oil into it, ignored the giant cardboard cover on the handle saying you got to put oil into it. Also tossed out the bottle of oil handily included int the box for the mower, and, figuring out after the first 20 or so pulls, that you first have to put gas in it. Then pulled out the container of gas, there from when his grandpappy was shorter than knee high to a grasshopper, and filled the tank with something that sorta smelled like gas. Then pulled and it sort of started and ran. Started on the garden, and after 3 minutes the engine starts making a funny noise, and suddenly stops.
Then he complains and cusses the air blue, and puts it back on his truck, and off to the big box store, screaming and ranting about how this junk just does up and stop working after 3 minutes. Store clerk looks at him, opens the oil filler, tells him "you ain't got no oil in here ahole, you just lost the warranty", and sent him packing, helped along by those 4 guys from loss control, who look something akin to The Rock, just with a worse attitude.
So off he goes, tail between the legs, and drops it off by Bre, with a number he knows will be cut off in 2 weeks, because he has not paid the phone company, beer more important than phone, and forgot about it till spring sprung again. Then remembered he had to mow the jungle now, so looks for the slip, can't find it, and so complains to BBB about how you gone and lorst his mower, and he is the innocent victim of this dastardly dead.

Many times in the shop customers would decline the repairs and my Dianostic fee, so the service advisor no charged it. That meant the mechanic got paid nothing. Kinda make you want to jump on the next job and just waste your time. After years I learned a % of customers would complain to just get it for free. Then they would do it themselves of take it somewhere cheaper to repair. I started deleting the story explaining what was wrong and how I determined it if they declined paying for check out time. As a police sergeant I had to take all kinds of complaints about my officers conduct; most not warranted. My favorite was from a driver that was stopped and warned regarding a turning violation. The complaint was the office never smiled and talked in a monotone voice. The officer was a close friend who was a Marine combat sergeant and she described his demeanor to a "t". While being one of the most competent police officers I ever met, his nickname was "RoboCop". As I explained to the caller, I have known the officer for over 15 years, he was a close personal friend and he attended my wedding. In all that time I have never seen him smile and he always spoke in a deep bass monotone, nothing personal that 's just Dave.

When you replace an old battery with a new one you have to use a scan tool to tell your vehicle that the battery is now a new one. If not your vehicle will still think the battery is the old one. Your vehicle computer has the alternator charge older batteries at a higher rate than a new one and over time this over charging can prematurely kill the new battery.
Bottom line, register the new battery with your vehicle. 😊❤

That ended up being a lot of batteries. During that time we have changed battery manufacturers a couple of different times and it did not matter. I think now the batteries are being built better, so hopefully we will see better longevity out of these newer batteries.

The tax collectors have been bragging about the surplus tax revenue for years now. My local 10% sales tax has increased by 20% in the last 4 years with the same 10% tax. Now instead of 10 items at the dollar store for the tax break, I can only buy 8 items now to get the same break in taxes. 9.3% is $0.10 on a dollar or $.93 on ten dollars. @@frederickbooth7970 I've been buying Deka gel batteries for my Gold Wing motorcycle for some time now. The OEM Yuasa batteries would last 4-5 years at best. The last Deka battery I bought went 12 years before finally dying. What I really like about those gel batteries is, 1) that they provide full power consistently even when cranking for a long time (first time starting after six months in storage takes awhile), and 2) the idle discharge rate over winter is VERY slow. Yuasa batteries have steadily declined in a month, requiring frequent charging. The Deka batteries hold their charge well, and only need a little boost every couple of months (and probably don't need it, but I put the charger on just in case).

I'm getting a low voltage notification every time I put it in accessory position. I checked the battery, and it's showing 12.2 to 12.4 volts, which is below the 12.6 needed to run the van's systems correctly. The van is charging the battery with over 14 volts, so it's not the van's charging system. This coming week, I will take it to the store and see how good their customer service is.

Happy Birthday, Bre. The problem with the batteries at the box stores is they can sit on the shelf for months or years before they are sold. Years ago the batteries were delivered dry and the acid was added at time of purchase. Can't do that anymore. The clerks kept injuring themselves with the acid. Liability insurers demanded the batteries to be delivered complete. My 2020 Chevy Duramax required both batteries to be replaced after six months. It turned out that GM suffered huge warranty losses for the replacement of hundreds of thousands of batteries. It seems that the factory had been installing batteries that had been sitting in warehouses for three or four years with acid already installed. Go figure.

We had a 2002 Honda CRV - the OEM battery lasted until 2014! By the time we traded it in 2018 - we had replaced the battery 2 twice! Meaning, the OEM battery lasted 12 years and the new battery lasted 2 years.

I have a good idea what happened with the guy's mower. He probably bought it still in the box or ordered it online. Almost all consumer push mowers ship dry. There was probably a quart of oil in a package somewhere in the box but he never added it.

There are TWO things that I learned, the Hard Way.. 1.) In my small repair shop,I had a sign that stated,"MUST have a valid phone number-Also, Upon estimate or repair, you will have no more then 7 days to pick up your Item or forfeit to the Recycling Center" 2.) I stopped buying O'Reilly batteries becsuse they changed production to a lower quality, makeshift battery company.. I have had better luck with Walmart batteries...Also-- I periodically check the strength of all my (car)batteries,to prevent being stranded in the Mohobby Dessert(never been there but,still)...As with my Solar and Wind Power projects,I am CONSTANTLY rebuilding my own batteries and I have enough to power my house for SEVERAL hours

Batteries usually have increased internal resistance before they fail. Definitely need to check the battery state of health and fluid level at least twice per year to avoid being stranded. A bad battery will continue to start an engine for a long time before complete failure. It’s also hard on the alternator.

Problem is, depending on the state just a sign many times wont stand up at all if someone wants to pursue it.. Maybe you put that sign up after they dropped their unit off? Maybe they didnt see it. Even having signatures for that kind of stuff sometimes wont hold up if someone wants to push it.

    Happy birthday.
I have had no bad reviews after 10+ years in business (at current business) but have had 3 paypal disputes. 1 was due to slow freight that occurred in 2020 due a bug that was going around, 1 was a cranky customer that thought they should get free freight and the other was also a slow freight to an Eastern European country. All 3 went my way as in each case I had shipped goods within 24 hrs and had tracking details (and photos of the parcels). Some customers just aren't worth the trouble.

As handy as I find O'Reilly's, the best place for car batteries is Costco. They have a FREE REPLACEMENT warranty, not a pro-rated one. If your battery fails within the warranty period, you get a new battery or your money back. Believe me, I was shocked when I got a free replacement. Hard to beat that! Thanks for your videos - I've gotten a few valuable tips already, and I only discovered you today. Cheers!

I don't buy any batteries from an auto parts store, the battery I currently have in my van is from Batteries +. I bought it in 2015 and it is still going. It has a 6 year no BS warranty. If it fails with in the time period they replace it!. It is the most expensive battery I have ever bought and it is the only one that has brass terminals. I need reliability because my van has a chair lift for my power chair. Even though I have this battery, I always carry my GOOLOO 4000 with me at all times. I top it off every 2 months. I think I could use it to give each battery a hit on my chair if my charge ran short but haven't needed to so far. Happy birthday sweetie!
