- The Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Taoreed Lagbaja, has appealed to aggrieved Nigerians who have taken up arms against the state to lay down their weapons and seek dialogue to resolve their grievances.

Mr Lagbaja has spoken well. This is how the leader of a well-trained and well led military should speak. That is why in all serious countries, top army leaders are very well educated and able to have a helicopter view of issues ie a broad and all encompassing perspective that allows one to see the big picture. It was those top officers who invented the idea of "heart and mind" to deal with situations where sections of the population are alienated to the point of picking up arms. They did this after discovering that guns alone will never resolve anything. That is the mistake of African armies, they use guns imported from abroad to intimidate their fellow blacks and shoot down "agitators" or burn down whole villages instead of identifying and addressing the root causes of the purported agitation. In doing that, they make matters worse because violence begets violence and violence solves nothing.
So yes, good job Mr Lagbaja. He reminds one of the Nigerian Army in its hey days when Ojukwu as commander of the Army in the North refused to use the army to quell the Tiv riots to the annoyance of the Northern establishment. at the time.
