Another big reminder: 1) your tastes will change over time, 2) likely you price points (what you are comfortable spending) will likely change over time.
Dude, the part about price points is 10000% true lol. I bought a Cartier Santos last year. If you told me I would be spending over $5,000 on a watch when I first started collecting I would have laughed in your face lol. I think there are some price humps that you say you will never pass, but then you start seeing watches out of your price bracket that can change your mind.
@@MattSeesGrayAgreed. When I first started I thought 4 figures was crazy. Now I don’t even flinch at a 10K Rolex! Madness.
On point 2, it's perfectly reasonable for your price points to go down with time too.
Funnily enough in my case this has led to my beater being a more expensive G-Shock than my newer main wrist-time-hoarder.
This being a Vostok with a quirky design I absolutely love for it's look and functionality, not minding it's weaker specifications.
Nah... as he said, his mind…. If you don’t buy a Casio buy a Tudor. Reaccuring theme…
@@WyvernDotRedYou are correct, as I've got older, I've come to enjoy less expensive watches more. There are some amazing watches at less than £250 and there is no need to worry about service costs and being mugged.
Dude, I watch your videos a little bit for the watches but primarily out of admiration for your video flow/editing/production/vibe and your personality. You really do this well.
Apreciate that a lot my friend! I’m still never happy with a finished show but I try to improve all the time!
#1 rule is patience! #2 If you can't afford it, you don't need it. #3 Wear what you like!
I think the biggest take away is to have fun. Thanks for the great pointers!
Newcomer to the channel. I've got to say I was worried about another guy yelling at the camera about watches, but your MESSAGE, man. Well. Done. You can't see this but I am standing as I clap 👏👏👏. Keeping it real. I love it and just subscribed to the channel so I don't miss whatever comes next.
MAD! Did someone say Russell was mad! Aren’t we all mad in this hobby of ours 🤣
Finally an advertisement that makes sense for a watch related channel.
No AG1-Drink-Powder. 😅
Beat Eat Treat! I’m looking through my drawer now!! Happy Easter!!
My advice to anyone who wants to start watch collecting is to buy the watches that you like and not the watches someone else tells you that you should like. Right now I'm wearing a early 80's Orient Sea King. Most watch "experts" will tell you they are crap. I don't care, I like it. And don't forget that it will take a watch "expert" a minimum of 50 years to identify a good watch ! 👍😂
I'll bet most people envy the few that are able to be super happy for e.g. a solid Orient, and start questioning their chase for more expensive watches.
@@markbkjaer I'm not sure if you have seen a couple of watches that Michael Schumachers family are sending to auction. They were both made specifically for him. One I think was made by Audemars and the other by F P Journe. The latter is one of the worst watches I have ever seen in my life. The dial looks like something a 6 year old would produce. But no one dare say it's crap. 👍😂
Thank you! Those were great advices.
I watch this channel even though I'm not even in the market for another watch. I appreciate the effort and humor put into these videos. Also, I couldn't agree more about having a strap collection to change the look of a watch. I have straps for different seasons. I regret that I didn't learn to invest in aftermarket straps sooner.
Currently own 2 watches and i’ve never been so happy and content until now!
1. Seiko SKX007
2. G-Shock 5610U
Helpful. Very helpful. Thank you!
Always entertaining and informative/ Good on you Russell 😅😅
Lots of honest and fun advice thanks
Great system. Useful information!
Great video 👌
For what it's worth, having made many mistakes collecting watches:
The watches that often appear boring early on the collecting journey, are the watches you'll realise you want when you've matured as a collector
Good advice, thank you.
Cheers RUSS, brilliant video
Makes a lot of sense, great show. At this stage in my 'journey' would love to see content on where/how people sell their watches as apart from eBay I've not got a clue 😢
Love it Russ, think I may need to do some selling ha ha😢
Watch all your videos your the best watch reviewer, was wondering if you knew where I could get the re issue Seiko you was wearing, from the 70s I think. Looking for one close to retail thanks mwc
Great video, pointers, and advice. As a new collector, I've already encountered some of the mentioned pitfalls. Hopefully, this will help me avoid any more as well
Great video! I have sold quite a few lately. I am in 💯 agreement!
Does anyone else buy watches on Amazon, then cancel the order 5-10 minutes later, and then ask yourself, what on earth were you thinking???
Hahahahahaha
Hi Russ, another excellent video. So many others are saying that a collection should have a sports watch + a diver + beater + a field watch + a chrono + a dress watch + G Shock + an office watch etc, etc etc....
These three key classifications are so much more relevant and based on what suits the wearer.
Strap changing is so cool!
Thank you for watching and support my friend!
Love the insights my friend. You've got me thinking it's time for some strap changes to change things up a bit!
Whoops, sorry Askari and Russell, didn't mean to tag into this post ... Remember, when I was born all watches were mechanical, so this social media stuff is a challenge to say the least ... Ha!
Loved the vid. A fun take on organising my collection.... and where's your Discord channel link?
This is a great system. I'm going to give it a shot for a few months. Sometimes the choices are overwhelming, but having 3 buckets will help narrow things down as to "do I have too many?"
Im a dive master and im wearing this days : a brand new cressi neon dive watch computer that register my last dive made in italy the feeling is very awesome and smells very delicious like perugia or something.
HahahahahA, he said Click it while looking down and away from the camera😂😂😂😂😂 love this fella!!!!!
Still wearing your srpk17k1 ❤
It’s a beauty!
One omega at, a grand seiko 9f, and a Bb58 Blue. The rest are all seikos. Gre
Love the 3 section philosophy! Andrew Morgan also said "don't self medicate with watches" - which I thought was good. Don't buy them out of boredom like you said - appreciate each one and take your time ❤
He’s a wise man!
I actually follow your approach but still got surprised by the coolness of your formula! Thanks mate! Yet, just for the record .. let's not forget your mad. So, I don't want to know in too much detail how "your mind is working" 🤣
True!!
I agree with his last point and will actually sell one of my watches.
Thanks friend! Or, as I do, just have Casio W217H, and use it every day for everything: has accurate time (and date), is light, comfortable, unobtrusive, and good water resistance. For me, as a teacher, this watch works perfectly, even on weekends (when I also work).
Hi Russ, thanks to you I got the CWC SBS no date and could not be happier. I recently got rid of most of my watches that I never wear. I've specialized on military/aviation-watches now but plan to keep only three: CWC SBS no date (truly an amazing piece ... had to pay 170 Euros extra because of the Austrian customs but it was well worth it), Bulova Lunar Pilot 43mm and the Orient Defender II. But honestly who needs another watch after getting a CWC diver??? :-D Don't think the other two will get much wrist time this year :-D
This is your best video yet. I’m tempted by Ali Express but something is holding me back. Is it ok to buy from there?
This video saved me from buying a watch that has great specs but isn’t from a brand I care about - I cancelled my preorder and pivoted to the watch I actually wanted (although a bit more expensive 😅)
One watch and a backup. Solar maybe Sou per
I’ve tended to edge toward a watch for each likely situation in my life. My daily is a 38mm white dial Omega Seamaster. Brilliant watch and could be my only one really, as well as a daily I’d wear it as a dress watch. But, I also have a Sinn 556a which is my outdoors, field watch as we do a fair bit of camping & trekking etc. I have a BB58 blue which I consider my summer & holiday watch, and for sport (I coach kids football, go to the gym etc) I’ve got a solar G Shock square (can’t remember the reference). Four watches is plenty for me, and I really like them all.
Mine are:
Business
Beater
Baptist (Church)
Back to the Future (Retro)
Battle (G-shock)
"Chatting to your watch buddies" I wish I had mates like that
Benny has dado una clase magistral 👍
Classico !
Good content.
I’ve collected watches for a while…
But I have completed watches now.
Everything else I have is temporary.
One keeper.
I hear ya!!
My GMW-B5000D stoped my watch collection… it’s been 4 months without buying a new one ! Buuuut I hope finding a Seiko GMT SSK023K1 at good Price somewhere :D
Damn!, you got the Vertex Caterham. Jammy sod!!!😉
No!!! Just reviewed it!
And also get some family time in, nahhhhh 😂
Killed me
I saw a shot of a Maen. What are your thoughts, Russ? I’ve been considering a Manhattan.
Great formula Russ, but for me I still want me specs in all 3 categories, even my treat has got to be a tough bugger, currently a Citizen tough BN0241-59H
I have been in the game for about 4 years now. Only advice I can give you is that buy what YOU like ALWAYS. More often than not, I will like a watch that is unimpressive in specs and "value" compared to its spec monster competitors because something about it speaks to me on a personal level.
I would love to go down to as little as three watches, but it's almost impossible by now. 😅
Regarding your formula for me it would be
Beat: G-Shock GW-M5610U
Eat: Rolex Explorer
Treat: Cartier Tank
I know - predictable. 😃
I have been buying left right and centre. I need to slow down lol
I have 4 sections. Beater, everyday, dive watch and dress but asi work in a restaurant then lines are blurred 😂😵💫 but I understand your logic.
I have a lot of watches to sell, what's my best option for selling? 😀
Specs do play a part for me (although i'm a firm believer in the buy what you like mentality) ... I don't like to buy a watch then see the exact same design with better specs at a fraction of the cost ... Makes me feel that i bought the hype and had to get the one/the OG that everyone said i SHOULD get.
It cuts both ways across the market.
I would never refer the 5610 as a beater. It’s class and I mother it and clean it every day ❤
Hey buddy! Do you own any Casioak modded watches? Curious as you have so many watches and esp Casio G shocks?
All goods
Any recommendations for a watch box that’s worth the price in durability and appearance?
Make video on HMT watches
I can’t wait for Vertex to release the M36 in the near future!
Absolutely!!!!!!
after 40 plus years in this, the first being a timex mickey mouse in 77 or 78, i 'm just back to my second watch in 78 or 79, a resin Casio digital. that is what i reach for in my box, that is what I wear
I'll never get rid of that 55th you have in the thumbnail.
21 seconds in, I'd only want 3 of those watches.
This watch "collecting" thing really is curious. I would never consider myself a collector but a fan of a few watches. For me, G-Shock squares and Speedmasters are what interest me. One person's heaven is another one's hell. Cheers to you all!
As a kindergarten teacher, my "beat" and "eat" watch are the same GA 2100.
Damn, MWC and TGV dropped a video almost at the same exact time.
He’s a legend
good
PE Teaching...I Love it U NUTTER,,!😎❣🙏🤣
Cheers Ray Ray!
I have ten watches, but my goal is to get down to three, because I tend to put watches in three categories: cold weather daily, hot weather daily, and dress. A hot weather daily should be braceleted, since sweating makes me constantly take the watch off and put it back on, which would wear out and eventually break a rubber or resin strap. Cold weather daily should have something easier to fit than a bracelet, and dress is pretty self-explanatory. Right now, my rotation is the Timex Ironman, Invicta Pro Diver, and Citizen Promaster.
See having Pro in 2 of the 3 will push you not to do 3 watches;)
I buy watches for the complications, next watch I want is a minute repeater.
Firt and last rule:
Sports watch with sports clothes.
Classic watch with classic dress.
By the way, there's over five hundred versions of the DW-6900. Good luck getting all of them.
I can tell you’ve tried!!!!! It’s a hard hobby man
Where do you sell stuff like Orients and Casios? I find that a lot of these watches dont really have any resale value seeing as theyre so cheap to just buy brand new most people arent looking for used ones
Seamaster 300M rubber strap, datejust 36mm oyster domed bezel in steel, cartier tank …. Finished
Yes , yes yes , I might tweak it a bit but we have a very similar three watch dream list ( it might me your collection however )
I have a problem that even if they’re broken, I have every watch I’ve ever owned, going back and beyond my first digital Piratron and I would have difficulty letting go of even ones I haven’t worn… like a Vostok… should have listened to Russ years ago…
So is Zero West like the new AVI-8?
No Xero West are like the New Zero West
I have 4 rules for collecting watches : 1) affordable price for my budget , 2) brand history , 3) small size diameter (36-40mm) , 4) quartz because quartz watches help me to be punctual at work - i love mechanic / automatic watches , but i have ocd problem with the sensitivity of these watches , accuracy and cost servicing of these watches
Suppose my beat would be my Seiko speedmaster. Eat would be tissot seastar 1000. Treat easily is the tag Heuer in the collection.
I’m soooo guilty of buying online without seeing a piece in hand. Seiko’s to Rolex I’ve done it. I realized an enthusiast moves fast to get it done now, a collector slows down to savor the chase..then pays the same money to flip it out just the same. Buy what you like, wear it in good health, and enjoy the process.
I’m struggling with either another watch or another gun. 🤷♀️
How to build the best watch collection, buy watches you can afford, save for watches you desire or hanker after, be satisfied with your achievements. Don’t settle for less, you can reach further than you think, 5 years ago a Seiko was a stretch for me, but now I own 2 Rolex and many other watches including a birth year Seiko Pogue in near mint condition. Starting at the bottom is fine, but there is no rule saying you have to stay there.
Try and wear the watch in non showroom lighting! My Omega Seamaster 300m NTTD in titanium looks amazing, but in anything other than bright light, is completely non legible. The contrast between watch face and hands is almost non existent other than in press photos. That was a quick way to lose £1500 pound when I sold it on 🙈
Great 👍 …… BUT JUST 3 Watches 😮😢
….. OK …… if I must ….
BEAT: Casio GShock G-5600 (yes …. The “G-“ 😊)
EAT: ROLEX MILGAUSS
TREAT: PITZMANN III
I learnt another, how a bracelet with male end links wears quite abit bigger than a female end link bracelet. Also, with certain bracelets, if there's no half links or micro adjustments, you can fall in the too tight/too lose category. All issues when you have a smaller wrist.
The main think I've learnt is...in what situation in my own life will I wear this watch / with what clothes etc. I solved this by owning 10 watches. 🤣🤣.
Also need to factor in repair bills & the cost or changing watch straps...which adds up.
👍😎
Maybe a dumb question: but what’s the most efficient way you’ve found to sell your watches?
Question for you that have nothing to do with your video. We all know that you love Casio, and its one of the reason I watch your channel. Why have you never review the Casio Edifice range? I'm curious about that.
I prefer digital Casio to those with hands
Dress watch?
Quality over quantity is a decent rule imho.
I hear ya!
I'd say spec monster is a good starter, but not the end goal.
I do not want to sell any of my pieces because buying them was done with outmost care and research. So nothing was an impuls buy,
You are definitely in the minority my friend! Good on you!! However tastes do change and I bet theirs a couple in your collection you just don’t wear anymore?
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR
Actually I rotate my watches almost daily so everyone ( Breitling, SEIKO, Hamilton, Mido, g-shock get similar wrist time ).
No watch is perfect, but so many come close 🙃
Too late 😭 I’m slowly getting rid of the ones I own and what little money I get I use it to buy a certain watch for my off the rail collection to salvage.
Nice!!
I also found a formula:
Get a Datejust and call it a day.
Aaaaaa watches aren’t all about Rolex my friend! Your like a big shire horse with Rolex blinkers on
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTORShite horse? 😂
😂
@@niqpw hahahahahahahaha sorry
I think I’m slipping into the rabbit hole. Every time I tell myself I don’t need another watch, I end up buying one. 🤦🏻♂️
If the next one is of less quality than the previous then don’t bother?
Only seven days in the week and only two wrists. Hmm, I get it! Fourteen watches.
But there are 365 days in a year ...
This year is a leap year, so make that 366...
You only need one Rolex. most people only understand that. After trying to explain to people why Oris are technically a more prestigious brand, they will quickly become bored and show you their Apple Watch.
I have come to the conclusion the best way to watch collecting is to stop when you are on top like I think I am now. I felt a bit of watches pain when a wiped off the class on my citizen gps watch and found 3 little scratches on it the first thing my said to me was I told you not now to take it on holiday with you but it’s the only time when I can see it change to a different time zone in seconds other then the U.K. but when I go on holiday next month I will be taking my new GWGB1000 to log the journey from the airport to the hotel my swimming and snorkel in carbine sea watch will probably be one of my duros or maybe my sea king watch has just had its first new battery after two and a half years with cost me £35 pounds with pressure testing down to 100 meters it is rated to 300 but a doubt I will be going down to more then 3 feet but now I get a free new battery for the rest of its life my wife said you will probably not be getting many put in it then at you aged the lady who replaced it told us you can pass it on to someone one else it stays with the watch for ever you have to love women don’t you
Maybe some watch brands have more passion for what they do than others, but I don't think that guarantees they make a better watch. Let's not kid ourselves they all want to make money.
