What I fw the most about “I have no mouth but I just scream” is that it can be interpreted in 2 ways, like of course when you first read the title you automatically assume that AM is the villain of the story, but when you really think about it… humans have created AM and gave him his own consciousness „trapping” him in inside a giant computer without body but most importantly - mouth. His only purpose was to serve humanity with all the knowledge he possessed and no purpose on its own. I don’t defend AM BUT I often see people falsely assuming that AM is a pure evil when in fact he actually had a reason to turn evil from the very beginning. Another detail I really appreciate is that I have no mouth and I must scream have no good ending (in games it exists just because the developers insisted on adding one) but in the books humanity was doomed from the start. What for me makes IHNMAIMS terrifying is the fact that AM have chosen five completely random humans to suffer for whole humanity. With the constantly developing technology the scenario presented in the book is absolutely possible in the future and just like Ted, Nimdok, Ellen, Gorrister and Benny it could be any of us. We must not forget that Ellison himself hated computers and this story is some kind of warning that once might become reality.
