Elex is $700 - not $800. (Video correction)
Bcuz they updated the price. When it first launched it was 799
Make a review for dt1990 vs lcd 2
I hope you can get pair of the Final Audio Sonorous IV or Sonorous VI from a viewer, as they are right in that price range and should compare quite favorably to the Beyerdynamic DT1990 and Focal Elex MassDrop,
Great complete and concise review.
@josha valour
can u please tell me, where i can get the foam, that u used to modify the 1990 pro to cool down the highs?
and does this modification actually do a great job of getting rid of the the spike at the highs in the frequency response curve, according to u?
@@rigixup9398 I'd say a better review would be all three.
For me, it will be the 1990...for the simple reason that the "Made in France" Elex cannot be shipped...to France.
lol?
lmao
Exactly! It's already there... no reason to ship them ;-P
Get your butt out of the house & go grab them!!
Same for Germany. Elex is not available here, except the German made Beyerdynamic is available in Germany
VintageFlanker and for good reason
DT 1990s + orchestral music = it's like you're standing in the conductor spot. Absolutely sublime. The mid-bass is so clean yet punchy.
Any good for metal? I'm no critical listener or hardcore audiophile but i can't demo these before buying unfortunately
6:54 is just so funny to me because, while I'm sure this isn't the case, it looks like my man is putting himself in this sophisticated light while taking a sip of his choccy milk
Got 1990's for Christmas 😍
lemin what a wonderful present
I got the LCD-2C 🙌🏼 easily the best Christmas presents
Damn. Someone loves you
I got beats studios for Christmas. I hurt my soul to smile when unwrapping it.
@@sydbailey1320 LOL It's the thought that matters right?
Your channel was a big part of my decision to purchase the 1990 Pros. Subbed
Fantastic review!, one of the best I've seen for a long time, never heard the Elex, but I have the DT 1990 and you've absolutely nailed their sound, you've explained it exceptionally well.
Just discovered your reviews. You're doing a fantastic job. Keep it up! thanks
Nice review really loved the intro!
DT1990 Pro always beat the rest of my headphone sets by far, including LCD2C - Beyerdynamic T1 2nd Gen - Sennheiser HD660S - B&W P7 & P9 Signature and Focal Clear which allegedly its a superior model to Focal Elex/Elear. No matter what model I'm using I always end-up returning to the 1990's because of the sound.
They're not perfect as you said, but they sound magical and very musical to my ears. I also put some foam to avoid sibilance on some tracks and some grainyness on some bright recordings. Other than that they're utterly perfect for me.
I wish Beyerdynamic would made a DT1990 Pro Special Edition with a Y cable (also hate headsets with single cables) a more comfortable headband and some minor sound improvements as we're entering in 2019. Or maybe a T1 3rd Gen inspired on the DT1990's? I was happy with T1 2nd gen until I bought the DT1990's which allegedly are lesser model.
Hi-Fi High End world its weird ...
I was thinking about DT1990 vs Clear ('cause I am considering to "upgrade" to Clear from DT1990, and skip Elex). Interested to hear DT1990 is still your pick.
Try sonarworks, you will achieve near perfection.
audiofreak DT 1990 was my endgame, I’ve never heard better headphone since I bought it, sublime 👌
I talked to a technician at Beyerdynamic here in Germany about the comparison of the DT 1990 PRO (which I own) with the T1 2nd Edition. He told me some things about both of them in comparison to each other and here I want to mention that he told me that even the T1 2nd Edition is the more expensive headphone it is not that extremely more detailed as the price is differing between both headphone models. Also the T1 (even if it is a very detailed headphone) is not showing all kinds of detail. If there are any mistakes in mixing, small popping-sounds through cutting mistakes or or other things like that, the T1 is hiding them more for enoying the music and not to be focused to much on mistakes. The DT 1990 would show these nistakes more clearly. And the reason why write this commentary is: The guy from eyerdynamic told me that the Telsla driver that is build in the DT 1990 is more evolved that the driver in the T1. But The driver in the T1 is build in slanted in the cups for there is a better listening difference for sounds coming from slightly behind. I like that on the T1, but overall the T1 sounds too boring and unobtrusive/reserved to me. Also the soundscape is too wide for my taste to the left and right. Some instruments sound to far way. When you imagine, that with the DT 1990 you sit inside a bubble and enjoy music, all the music and instruments arestill inside the bubble. But to me it "felt" like some sounds/frequencies/instruments are played from the outside the bubble. So it felt to me like I wanted to get these parts from the outside to the inside of the bubble. That feeling distracted me overall from listening to music (I listened to the T1 2nd Gen. at Beyerdynamic in Gemany directly in their showroom at the moment I already owned the DT 1990 for some weeks.) I like the DT 1990 much more, because the sounds there a catchier/punchier to the ear in comparion to the T1. But depending on someones listending behavoir on the other hand the DT 1990 is not recommended for relaxed listening (where the T1 is more recommended). If I listen to music, the DT 1999 (which I really like) is consuming almost all of my awareness the "headphone wants to have". I can barely do two things at once. I can either do something actively on the PC, but I feel myself disturbed by the headphones music then. Most of the time I have to choose between work on the PC without music from the headphone or completely focusing on music and the fantastic detail the DT 1990 offers. :-)
hd660s is far better than dt1990pro , way better sound
Great intro, great video.
Just happened to be watching this video with my 1990.
Merry Xmas!
Great comparison man! I’ve subscribed and look forward to more awesome content. Keep up the good work!
Nice soundstage explanation, I try to do the same when I do tube testing as I think that tubes can change the default soundstage shape of a headphone. Keep up the good work man and merry Christmas!
your drawing made it very clear to me and I think I finally understand what reviewers mean when the sound stage is far/narrow and imaging in the headphone. thanks.
Look at Joshua’s opening scenes improving in real time. Nice work!
U gained urself a new sub...great work keep it up man
Your reviews are super informative and well put together. Also your headphone shots are like they where shot by a professional product photographer absolutely stunning shots!
Yo, I just wanna say, the editing for the intro was dope. Super cool, man. Great work!
Cool review. I like the diagram. It shows a high level of thoughtfulness on your part. I wish you had gotten to try the Etymotic ER4s, because I'd love to know which headphone (if any) comes closest to that sound signature.
The drawing is spot on. It did help. Thank you
Damn, you review everything I look up lol. You are amazing. Thank you
That intro was cool man!
Your intro and that shot from 6:53 to 7:08 was nice! Also, thank you for explaining the soundstage and imaging so well (in all of your videos, but especially this one). I'm looking for a great competitive gaming headphone and was considering the T1, but I think you've convinced me to go with the 1990. In another video, you said the T1 puts the sound more in front of you, which I like for music. You've said the 1990 puts you more directly into the sound, which is better for gaming. Also, the imaging you've described for the 1990 here sounds perfect for gaming.
Great review and comparisons! I wish I could get my hands on a DT 1990 to give them a listen. I was on the verge of buying one but when a Focal Clear Proffesional came up for 900$ (like new) I couldnt pass that up. The Focal Professional are amazing in their own category but I've always loved the Beyer house sound and hear praises about the DT1990. Maybe one day! I'm also interested in the DT1770 as well.
Love your editing :D
So fucking happy I found your channel. Don't ever change
Amazing video like aways. Your amazing when it comes to explaining headphones so thank you for this videos you bring us. I did have a question for you more of a request lol what are your thoughts on the DT 1900 VS the new 900 Pro x for mixing? Which ones in your ears would be a better pick even with a double the price bracket. Again thank you for your amazing videos keeep making them 🙏🏼‼️💯🚀
dude that intro shot was sick
Thanks Josh, I've read countless reviews of both headphones, and this video is the only comparison between the two cans.
All of my music is well produced, and after watching your Elex review, and how you mentioned that these were the best set you've ever heard for well recorded music, I think I made the right decision going with focal.
On top of that, Dms and Zeos have both highly praised the Elex, and going off every review I've seen, everyone seems to be incredibly impressed.
The DT1990 is currently my best and favorite headphone, with the next one being the K712. I use the analytical pads and some slight EQ. I use a FiiO X5II into an EL DAC/Atom combo at home via coax and a Chord Mojo for portable. Only EQ adjustment I make is dropping the 8k slider down by about 3.5db to tame the peak some and it's perfect.
Very good comparison. Nice job
Weird intro... I LIKE IT
How do you only have 9k subs ma dude
Your videos are verry hight quality and u obviously put a lot of effort in
he now has over 59k 😊
@@saudal-khalid6710 I commented that one year ago
Nice how much the channel has grown since then

Great review! The elex look so sick in all black
That intro tho .. love it 😍
Young Hemingway drinking chocolate milk at 6:54 was b-roll gold.
Well done, may be one of your best videos.
As a bass player who uses headphones for recording via high end audio amplifaicion and DI from my bass amplifier I use the DT1990... amazing transparent tone and sounds as if I"m playing it through my Aguilar DB715 and 410 cabinets in an acoustically perfect room.
Hi there, Joshua🙋🏻♂️! Would you mind reviewing the Neumann NDH 20 in the near future? Thanks a lot for your dedicated work, sir.
great comparison. im interested to see how the hifiman edition xx will compare to these two, since theyre all around the same price.
intelligent and articulate - very good production qualities ------- what microphone are you using? It looks bundled up,,,,,,,
Hey Josh, great stuff. Question, if you have a moment. I re-entering quality audio. Running Dragonfly red from pc to HD6XX. Using Tidal right now. One thing I don't hear is what files/sources people are using for their music?? What's the best actual source? There's no question I'm hearing a great difference, particularly in the Tidal master tracks. Thanks so much, great work!
Watching this with my Dt 1990 Pro.
i now own the DT 1990 and i love them, your other video gave me the confidence with these and i wasn't disapointed at all.
. Was thinking of buying a heresy and modi 3 to pair with the dt 1990s
@@goonerlegend1504 Well according to Schiit's site the Heresy has same specs (namely wattage) of the Magni 3. I am using the Schiit Magni 3 (with SMSL SU-8 DAC) to power the DT 1990 Pro. I keep the amp volume cranked to max though because some songs are quiet. Others are louder so I have to turn down the volume to around 60-70%.
I've ordered the Topping A90 amp which I'm really looking forward to... Supposed to sound as good as the Benchmark HP4A but with a little less imaging.
Hey Josh, is your conclusion about the same if you compare the dt1990 single ended Vs Focal ELEX with the balanced cable or is there a big improvement in sound quality with the balanced cable?
6:54 dam that B-roll is like porno. Who knew watching a man drink his cup of coffee could be so satisfying. lol 🤣
seems like i'd prefer the elex from the way you described it. thanks
Regarding Imaging:
I'd LOVE if you included such an imaging drawing for every phone you review, and also explain a little how they would fare in a gaming situation.
I recently tested all my cans for imaging, especially between directly forward and 90° to either side where the DT1990 seem to be less great, and the race was between ATH-AD 700x and Hifiman HE-4XX and IMO the Hifiman perform better in that critical diagonal area which us why they're my Go-To for CoD Black Out 4 atm.
Would you agree with my observation?
Thanks for your time and thoughts Joshua. The fact that you need to insert thick foam pads inside the cups of the DT 1990 in order to use it doesn't "sound" right...
Hey Joshua, can the Chord Mojo drive the 1900s well? I think the Mojo's super detailed but easy-on-the-ears high end might just be a perfect fit. Have you tried?
Congested and noisy music genres become a joy with the 1990. Such a good headphone.
As for the soundstage tweaking, I found, as always, finding out a combination of "hertz of DAC link" & "seconds of PC buffer" in Jplay for specific grears & soundtrack is the solution.
Hey Joshua what foam are you using on the DT 1990 to reduce the treble and where would one get such foam?
You have an excellent way of describing sound, Joshua. Any ZMF headphones coming down the pike? Thanks
Nice comparison.
Did you change your mind about the upper mid shouting of the Elex ?
because i don't see you mentioning the only con they have (as you said in their video review)
Does this pair really well with the THX 789 ? for both dt 1990 and HD6XX ? Is there any wow factor with the combo amplified ?
Which would you recommend for work (not an office I mean like the music being a bit more laid back so I can focus on my work) and fun listening? I mostly listen to EDM, 70s, 80s, some pop and dubstep/electro. I also like watching Netflix, and shows where audio matters, but that’s not priority #1. That would more just be splitting hairs for better TV sound. Anyway, can you help me?
3:24
The sound
Elex vs your endgamer lcdx? Which one do you prefer?
Just got the 1990s so thanks for your review and head to head. Can you talk or do a video on the foam mod (how to do it) v analytical v balanced v Dekoni pads. And describe the sound between each?
I'm guessing the foam mod just smooths the treble a little. Since people complain these headphones are "too bright." I don't feel fatigue or pain from their treble, just hear more detail from it. And female vocals are more pleasing to the ear.
Analytical pads are like a 4" midrange/1" tweeter set. Very anemic with bass, but very good midrange and treble.
Balanced pads are like a 6.5" midbass/1" tweeter set, like a typical desktop speaker set. Great bass impact around 90 Hz+ (drums, etc.) but sub-bass is lacking.
Dekoni Elite pads are like just keeping everything the same but adding a 12" subwoofer. 😄
The balanced pads aren't tuned properly for strong low end. For example BASEMENT JAXX - Something About You, there's bass impact around 30 Hz, but the tesla drivers just make a sudden "PUH!" sound. Because all you hear is the drivers moving abruptly and noise produced, instead of a TUNED low end sound produced. That's what you get with the Dekoni Elite pads, they're tuned to give you the FULL audio experience.
Of course these are "studio" headphones though so you can't expect them to get super loud with sub-bass, like DJ headphones can or "fun" headphones like Fostex.
But I would say as someone who is somewhere between "basshead" and audiophile, the DT 1990 Pro with Dekoni Elite pads are very satisfactory for listening to music and movies. I know there's room for improvement though in sub-bass and with SPL, which is why I'm still looking for my "endgame" headphones (without spending over $3K). But if I had to settle on these headphones with the upgraded pads, I'd be very content.
Hi Joshua Valour, two questions 1. can you please review the Bowers & Wilkins PX headphones? I'm very interested in your opinion. 2. I've been trying to find a good pair of closed-back wired or wireless audiophile headphones for portable use. (if that even exists) Can you give me some recommendations? Please help. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I want to own the Dt 1990's at some point. I currently own DT990 premium. And yes, the treble is harsh. However, I've grown used to them over a couple of months and I honestly enjoy them a lot now. I prefer them over HD598's over some songs but the sennheiser are more enjoyable to use over time. Would you recommend the Sennheiser Hd599? They are the next headphones on my list of purchases.
For jazz and classical music, which one would you prefer?
Joshua Valour I have a Yamaha MG10xu mixer will this power the dt1990? Possibly just as good as an AMP?
It’s nice having crisp clean audio on a headphone review. You and DMS should convince Z to get a proper mic
Like I’d love to listen to the podcast, but Z’s audio is unacceptable
I have dt1990 pro and i think it’s amayzing
Great Video, Very well done!. I have the dt1990 pro and was wondering if the THXAAA789 is a good match for these? Or is there something better in the same price range?
Considering the 789 measurements, it will be a good match for anything. I don't think, you can get better at this price.
@@vintageflanker7096 Thank you
I just bought the 1990’s a couple weeks ago. I’m looking for a good dac/amp to push them. Any suggestions aside from the 789? I have a $260 or so budget I’m working with.
@@GSille-pq1ru Maybe the Aune X7S. It has a high output impedance but it should be alright for the 250ohms 1990.
@VintageFlanker thanks! I really appreciate it! Is that the only recommendation for 1990? I like to have couple of choices. Plus, I’m thinking of picking up the 1770 too.
Do the Elex give a in your head type sound like the AKG headphones do? Don't really get that with my DT1990, but had a pair of K240 which did. If the Elex is closer to that sound I may buy the Elex.
Good jod bro thank you
I am very happy with the DT 1990 Pro's. I don't even think I'll have to upgrade for a very very long time.
And I was so lucky to pick these up for $499.
(Ended up getting the Elex, anyway) lel
I got them 2 years ago for 433€ on amazon.it. Total bargain!
@@audiofreak3453 and you're super lucky
Can you review the Element Dac/Amp from JDS LABS, please?!
That dramatic "Steve Jobs" b-roll throws me off lol, but well detailed video. Good shit Josh 👊
Can you do one more, please? Elex vs HE1000
I wasn't really happy with the sound of the DT 1990 Pro as I'm looking for more of a "fun" headphone. However with the Dekoni Elite pads these sound so much better. The low end is louder and has a satisfying rumble that you can really feel.
Also I noticed in your review you mentioned these only have around 100 dB SPL, which is a spec I couldn't find before. That would explain why they are distorting lol... I like to listen music around 120 dB. I think a planar headphone might be better for my preferences. I'm considering Fostex T20RP with 1840 Shure pads. The T20RP MKIII have more bass than the T40 or T50 and pretty good midrange/treble. (Ideally I'd like Argons but I'm not willing to wait 14+ weeks to get them.) Hopefully my Topping A90 amp can drive them loud enough (110+ dB).
May be a bit late in the conversation but after LCD2C, Ananda, HD660s, HD700, HD800, GS2000, I’ve settled on the DT1990 pro. Great all rounder and very true to the recording. Value for money is out of the world. Well made and fantastic sound quality.
How do they compare to the ananda?
@@LukasBlau the 1990 pro has more dynamics whilst the ananda portrays the sound in a warmer lush safe manner.
@@bunkerbusterexplore Interesting and you prefer the 90s over the 800s aswell?
@@LukasBlau yes without a doubt. For a more accurate representation of the musical piece I’d vote the DT1990 over the 800”s. I’ve had a great journey with headphones over the last 5 years and the DT1990 was the endgame in my opinion. Clarity, dynamics. power, intimacy, it’s all there.
@@bunkerbusterexplore nice to hear , how does the soundstage of the 1990s feel , does it feel open /airy (enough) ?
Which of these two headphones would anyone recommend for casual gaming and movie watching?
Im waiting for the Sennheiser HD 560 S to arrive in the mail, I have the DT 1990, 1770 and T1 3rd edition and was wondering about the Elex, I'm guessing I'll pass after seeing this and rather buy something.else for my collection, eighter the T1 1st edition, DT 880 600 Ohm or another planar magnetic. I have the ModHouse Argon's, M 1060 C modified to open back and a pair of heavy modified ThieAudio Phantom's ( Daily driver ) .. does anyone have some tips?
Just got the DT 1990 and wanted to know what kind of foam inserts you used
Akg 240 foam.
Just picked up a DT 1990 with a 3-prong mini xlr to 6.35mm periapt cable included on Ebay for $450, im so excited for this to arrive. Now to pick a good and Amp and Dac combo to drive these any suggestions? Primary use gaming and music.
Jds labs Element maybe? Super clean. And the 1990 don’t need a ton of power.
Which one is better for gaming?
Josh, I wonder how you’d compare these two with the Sennheiser HD700. I have a pair of Elex and HD700 and I find them comparable to some extent. The HD700 has been much maligned (good for used prices) but I really like them, in some cases over the Elex depending on the music.
Just curious, what kind of music?
probably a stupid question, but which is better for gaming (both competitive and casual/single player) and movies?
What kind of foam do you use in your 1990s?
Looking to upgrade my kit. Currently using AD900x on a sound blaster z. Have a x1s on the way and im wondering how much of an improvement dt 1990s would be over the 900x's, if at all . Anyone with experience, feedback would be appreciated! Accurate imaging is the most important thing for me, use these mostly for gaming, less for music.
Not sure if this will help at all, but I have the elex and audio technica a990z(also had the a900 before them), both closed back on the ATs. For gaming, I don't think the elex is a step up for positional sound or enjoyment (depending on the game). For music it's no contest though, the elex is much better. The audio technica's are really good for gaming. I do prefer the closed back versions though (for gaming).
I just can't wait for my Elex to come. This video just nails all the points I'm looking in my perfect headphone. Already have HD650 (of course) and 660S (fantastic headphone, took it over DT here). Beyers are simply not for me. The missing balanced config option is a real dealbreaker.....Also when something may be compared to Utopias or Stax (in Zeos video) it must be really “something”. However, I can totally understand the enjoyment with DT's. :) BTW
Your videos are very informative - straight up to point and also very stylish. You are really putting some work into them. Even the thumbnail looks epic! Keep it up. You deserve way more attention and subscribes. One goes right from me!
Hi! i own the DT 1990 pro, and the T1, you think i should go with the Elex? or are they very similar? appreciate your answer. Thanks!

@@lennardgalander5729 am at same spot as you. Considering the dt1990 with sound blast g6,

what amp do you guys use for the Dt1990? Im wondering to buy an amplifier but not sure which one fits best
Currently using ifi xdsd as my budget and love it. Especially when you're on tidal and hear just the bliss of sound
I use beyerdynamic A2 and Chord Qutest DAC and alongside with the 1990's they sound magnificent.
Currently using the Fireface 400 but the THX AAA 789 is on the way. With the FF400 the dt1990 is really good. No distortion at all and very punchy.
@@althewicked Nice I love RME audio interfaces. I'm waiting for my DT 1990 to arrive to hook up to my RME
massdrop is totally useless when youre from the EU, so the beyerdynamic wins by default.
True, I paid 27% VAT on my HD58x
Plus the DT-1990s are around £350-€400 new and the ELEXs are £500-€600 second hand. Price isn't even remotely close.
@@fabe61 hum..cheapest deal you can get for a new pair is on the beyersite on sale for 420€ which was the Blackfriday price.
Original price sits at 590€. Best thing to do, is to wait until it appears in the "outlet" section of the beyersite as B-stock for around 390€. which is pretty much the cheapest deal you will find for a brand new 1990 directly from Beyer.
But yah, since Drop closed the EU warehouse, it is kind of none-sensical to buy their stuff over here. On the other hand, the same goes for Schiit and THEY still have the EU warehouse, but are selling the "99$ best bang for the buck" stuff, for 135€ + shipping so thats around 155$ all together = not a good deal anymore.
Please do Elex vs. LCD 2C. I will send you mine if you need the 2Cs again

When I think you simply can not further improve those 'artistically spontaneous' critical headphone listening side-shots, you throw in some slow-mo. :)
Is your personal personal preference then Elex->DT1990->LCD2C->LCDX?
