There's a huge difference between the two countries in the treatment of their respective indigenous peoples & culture.

But we have 8 million cattle.Dairy and beef.
    Also they are grass feed.

Similarities - down at the bottom of the world and so far apart from the rest of the world and especially in the pioneer days when it took months to get to Europe, we had to be independent, inventive and tenacious, we love the water and both Kiwis and Aussies punch above their weight on the world stage. Differences - like brothers there is sibling rivalry but to me the two main differences are first how we treat the indigenous people who were here before us. Second is immigration. Most immigrants to New Zealand were from England, Scotland and Ireland and while that was the case in Australia as well, they also had a lot of immigration from countries like Greece, which I guess are louder and more passionate. We are bit more polite and not as loud.

I'm not sure exactly when or where it started but the Aussie/Kiwi relationship has always been extremely competitive 'almost' like brothers. We're quite similar in a lot of ways (accent, language, laid back lifestyle) and quite different as well. Aussie by population is much larger than NZ but I think what's really driven the competition is our mutual love of sports. Being neighbor's and in the same hemisphere we play all the same sports and NZ has always been able to keep up with and a lot of times be better than our Aussie counterparts so it doesn't take too many big games or finals for the banter to start flowing. Decades of this has resulted in no Kiwi ever wanting to be confused for an Aussie and vice versa. For most of us it's all in good fun.

Aussies are proud of thier convict colony history, we were not a convict colony, Australians treated their indigenous peoples as less than human....right through to the mid 20th century, nz started with a treaty between the maori and the British crown, . We are both commonwealth nations with a rich British heritage, but just as Canada, USA, are sane but different so are aussi and nz. The family type rivalry exists, but we have stood together time and again on the battlefields of Europe. I hope you learn the history of ANZAC day, I reccomend a visit to the Gallipoli exhibit at Te Papa, Wellington.

It's all in the way we hold our vowels. Ok, well not all, but I think New Zealander's generally are a lot more "British" in their temperament and speech. eg. plants (said like ants) versus plants (said like aunts). The New Zealand way is generally quieter and more low key. Australians are more Americanised in the way they are generally. I guess to sum it up it's like Canada vs America. Subtle but distinct. There's my 2 bobs worth. Oh and yes, seriously, bush ! What they call bush is gum trees. What the Aussies call bush is NOT what I consider bush at all. Bush is what we have here......bush ! Green ! 🙂

When you fly over Aussie cities, all you see below pretty much, is brown and orange, the earth and the rooftops. Flying into any NZ city is paradise compared. I don't hate Australia. My brother lived there for 50 yrs before he passed and his daughter and her family live there. I have visited often.

Honestly, we really are similar to the Aussies, so we take pride in our minor differences. That, and the Aussies keep stealing our things and claiming them as their own. (Phar Lap, Pavlova and Crowded House come to mind)
There's a difference in our accents (Flight of the Conchords did a song about this, if I remember), as well as several important differences in slang. (Thongs means Jandals over there).
The difference that hurts, is that Australia is bigger, wealthier and more widely known than us with many Kiwis moving across the ditch to earn more.
On the other hand, politically there is a big difference in how indigenous people were/are treated and how much political power they have. (Although NZ isn't perfect on this front either).

Having lived in both countries when it comes to people there are a hell of a lot of similarities , geography and wildlife couldn’t be more different. We have quite different accents but I would say Australia’s regional variations in accent are bigger than ours. The colloquialisms are really different. That half a million kiwis have made Aussie home says a lot about how comfortable and painless the transition is. Bottom line just don’t call a Kiwi an Australian not because we don’t like Australians its just rude !! BTW a lot of us are happy that NZ is invisible to the world .

Primarily our accent which to the initiated is odd. Aussies elongate vowel sounds kiwis shorten them so to a kiwi the word six when spoken like an Aussie sounds like seeeeeeeex

NZ and AUS have a very close "big brother vs small brother" type of bond and do share a few things. Additionally we love to make fun of eachother at certain things, or agrue over something as silly as if Vegimite or Marmite is better. Overall, a bit of love and hate rivalry is present. Australians also like to steal our greatest things, one well known example is the iconic Kiwi pavalova dish.
One of the main misconceptions I see a lot of is around us having the same exact accent. While Australians and New Zealanders overall sound quite alike, there a few distinct differences between the two. This is a similar concept to how some also think Canadians and Americans sound the exact same.
Even something as simple as our countries flags commonly gets mixed up, or even worse, sometimes having us grouped in with Australia as being part of the same country even. (Some aussies even refer to us as an additional Australian state). Both nations flags are quite similar at a quick glance though, to be somewhat fair.

When I lived in the UK, loads of Brits thought I was an Aussie. Our accents are so different, but other nationalities, just group us together, along with our flags. (SIr Ernest Rutherford split the atom. Americans would know about him, he came from Nelson)
