  • Over the last few months I did a total strip and rebuild of my 2008 Drz400sm. There was a few delays in getting the last parts on the bike, most importantly the new Pirelli Diablo Rosso 2 tyres.
Now all the parts are on and the new tyres are mostly scrubbed in, let put this bike through its paces!

Fresh rubber always seems to vastly improve the feel of a bike, even sounds different, maybe quieter or maybe that bits just my imagination 🤔

I've had a mix of 150 and 160 on mine. As far as feel goes, the Pirelli Diablo 150 I had were rubbish and never gave me confidence, the Dunlop Mutant vastly improved that, but mileage decreased greatly. I had some Maxxis Presa M6119 in 160 at some point, absolutely fantastic tyre and that size handled like a 150, but sadly they got discontinued. Now I'm on a Mitas Sportforce+ on the rear, also in 160, but with this manufacturer it runs quite wide so the chain chews it a little. Still a lot of feel, though, and the mileage is the best of all so far. I'll definitely run the 150 at the next change.

You probably already know this but, when you increase tire size, you increase the amount you need to lean for the same corner. This is why sumo's and dirt bikes run smaller tires than you would expect, you can turn more while keeping the bike more upright, which is perfect if you aren't trying to go knee down.
If you aren't loosing traction from engine power, it's probably worth it to try a size down on any bike.

I hate 4x4 driver's. Look how much room they took up! They think they own the road. 🤬 Lmao I thought I was the only one. One time a fly went in my eye and I literally had to pull over and sort it out Vs trying to ride with one eye lol. It's that annoying thing when it's nice weather you wanna ride with your visor open but then shit like that happens 😅

Does it sit ok at them speeds? I have a 400e and beyond 70 it nasty. But that's on dirt tyres. I want a sm for the winter..

Front end on almost all trail, supermotos, etc - never feels great to me. Worst I felt was DT125, and KDX125. KMX 125 was ok. Not really a fan for road work. I know some are, but always found running costs, tyres, chains, sprockets - pretty tedious..

Get an aprilia rs50 or derbi senda. Or rieju. All great bikes. Derestricted they do 60mph easily. Keep up with maintenance and the bike will look after you.

Honestly I say to all 16yr olds wait to get a 125cc at 17, For many reasons its far better to do. However if you have no option then people who use 50cc bikes would know more than me. 🙂👍
