      DRZ is better; 6th gear doesn't matter cuz you're not going fast for extended periods on this anyway. carb isn't as easy, but once jetted right and if not left with old fuel it works...

      IDKnow which is better so I'm here LQQKin' ? I was already subb'd up to you but I had no idea you'd be taking this out for a
      spin.... Is there any bikes that are interchangeable w/ this bike? Sometimes you see a model that you can exchange the
      suspension or wheels with? I'm curious about the smaller tires on SM models? Is it for the look or performance?
      If I knew I wouldn't ask you.... that said, I'm not going to rush any purchase. Anyhoo, I trust you more than most.

    I had the JDM version of the KLX300SM called the "D-Tracker." It was the weapon of choice for tight twisties in the nearby mountains. I put a flat slide pumper carb in place of the OEM CV, a mild-grind cam, 300cc jug with Wiseco piston, a Nassert exhaust, upgraded suspension valving and stiffer springs front and rear, 300mm wave rotor, custom seat...It was a beast when I finished. I've moved on to bigger bikes, but that machine it's still one of the most fun bikes I've owned. I miss it at times.

      I mean everyone and their mom knows ktm is a balls to the wall mindset company. A Japanese manufacturer can make a competitive bike all they want but it won't be at the high spec 690 smc r. That bike is incredible fun with high quality components. Japanese will focus more on efficiency and reliability, so it's up to the consumer to do their HW.

    This bike is definitely suitable for highway speeds. I can consistently hit 85-90 mph every day without a problem, and have gotten it up to 100mph on declines with a good surface. Only issue is that it can be hard to overtake cars in the passing lane if everyone is already going 80mph.

    Just so you know the front suspension on the KLX300SM is adjustable. It has 24 clicks of adjustment underneath the front forks. The SM slightly stiffer at 13 clicks from the factory than the Dual Sport. I put on knobby tires which are way stiffer than the stock tires and had to soften the suspension front and rear.

    I don't know man, I own a DRZ400sm and a KLX 300 dual sport (almost the same bike) and I have to disagree. The the DRZ feels more powerful by far, and I have a tuner and exhaust on the KLX. The quality of the DRZ is superior as well, the KLX just feels cheaper to me if that makes sense. It is a good little dual sport, but I would trade it for a DRZ S model in a heartbeat.

      The DRZ doesn't get much respect these days. It's not the new shiny thing. But IMHO it's still the best of these mid priced dual sport and SMs. Just for that extra power and torque alone. It's a legendary bike.

    I like the KLX, but the DRZ is still king of the low cost SMs. Way better aftermarket support for the DRZ (nobody leaves any of these bikes stock!) and it has that extra bit of power/torque. A DRZ with exhaust, jet kit and 3x3 mod will outrun the KLX all day.

He cannot touch the DRZ.... it just RIPS away from his KLX.... I tried to pop up wheelies on his KLX and it takes way more effor and technique to wheelie it... also with the smaller width tires on the KLX it requires more balance on the back wheel.

      If suzuki simply converted the drz to fuel injected 6 speed trans and made no other changes, i would buy that over this. Tbe problem for me is 300 is little and 400 is bigger but this is a little lighter, but also lower build quality i think. But being newer its got a little higher tech so the little 300 has some beans and you got a 6 speed so it starts to make the dr400 look anchient. Although i perfer tge dr build quality. It has a glass headlight i think and thats nice to have if the lighting wasnt 90s tech inside the glass. If i updated the drz400 id.do led lights, glass headlight lense id keep, maybe if beef it up to 450, 6 speed. To keep it above the klx

    My 09 KLX250S was very freeway capable. Pomona to LA on the 10FWY during morning and afternoon rush hours going 80mph with Kenda trackmasters. I’m sure that the 300 would be a little better. For those that don’t know, that’s a 25mile trip each way, and CA speed limits of 65mph are really 80mph. Where it did struggle was on a trip to big bear, at elevation my 250 (carbureted) saw a very noticeable loss of power. Still got me there at the speed limit. That was a 56mile trip each way. Only mods were snorkel removal, DG exhaust, and re-jet. I think in order to comment on freeway capabilities you do need to ride it on the freeway, it will surprise you.

    The lack of fuel gauge is something that I find a deal breaker. It's odd that so many dirt bikes don't have them. It would be great as a farm bike and even farmers in the outback need to know at least roughly how much fuel they have before setting off to the other side of their property.

      You should really try to find someone to try riding theirs.
      Having ridden a klx250 and now owning a dr650:
      Klx250 is a easy riding very forgiving bike that can do a lot more that people think, but it beats it up to do so.
      It really really needs an uncork and rejet to help throttle response and get a little more power. Feels like a lighter adventure bike with lower center of gravity.
      Vs
      Dr650 has easy to control power. I immediately noticed how i could power out of mistakes that the klx wouldn't. Klx felt like i could dabble with the dirtbikes, where the dr650 could keep up with them and follow them through that tough stuff.
      The only time i ever stalled... was when a soft dirt mound pushed my shifter into a different gear creeping over it.
      And the dr has no problem doing 70mph freeway, including passing, for long trips.
      The klx250 stock is more a hwy bike (no passing power when you are already going 70mph)

I have had too many injuries to risk the constant falling and at my age I am thinking of converting it to the SM.

    6 gears FI and $1000 cheaper than DRZ. I've been practicing front brake and stoppies on parking lot, it's amazing. It can push on highway 70mph easily for short ride and no wind.

    @CraigSmith568 Před rokem +19

    Nothing against the Kawasaki, but I prefer the Suzuki. I actually prefer the carb over the FI. Modding the carb is super easy. I had a KLX 250 and it had six gears and I really don't notice a difference. It only drops the rpm a few hundred at highway speed. You said yourself that you would not use it out on the highway. Also that tachometer is pretty much useless unless you just want to see how many rpm's you are running at a steady speed. The DRZ has adjustable front and rear suspension and more power.

      I'm not sure exactly why but I've still never ridden a DRZ despite it being one of my most desired bikes for about 18years.

      @maxwell9734 Před rokem

      @@wolfpackpete6408 you can't just stick another gear into the gearbox. Each of the gears, are all interconnected with splines that run along the shafts. Changing, or adding gears, requires completely rearranging All gears. Imagine a set of stairs... And you can only lift up your foot, ten inches... So, no step can be more than ten inches... Adding steps, means a larger gearbox, (staircase) I know that it might be possible, to add a lower gear, below first, without having to change the whole configuration, but all the other gears would remain the same. Then, you would have 6 gears, but... The size of the gearbox would have to be larger and an additional idler wheel added as well..
      Overall, it wouldn't be realistic to do that without creating a whole new gearbox that would be much better for the horsepower and torque available...

    Great review. Too bad it doesnt have an electric motor. Whats the point of an engines bike when you see all those electric bikes crusing around and anyone with some electical knowledge would know how to take the speed limiter off and have something that can hit 40 or 50mph quicker than a motorcyle + no need for gas!! Im sorry but I think the motorcycle companies are too slow and lost out. Unless they prepare for these kids growing up with cutting edge electric motorcycles in the future. But they just drag their feet like the DRZ.
