Nautilus houseboat: German functionalism, golden ratio shape

- The Nautilus houseboats are modeled on their namesake, the spiraled-shell mollusc, to fit seamlessly with the natural world. Nautilus Hauseboot owner/founder Andreas Hoffmann designed the craft when he couldn’t find the right houseboat for his family. As a trained carpenter and architect and sailor/windsurfer, he wanted to combine his passion for water and his professional skills.
The midcentury-modern-inspired floating home comes in two sizes- the Nautino mini (16m²) and the maxi (21.5m²)- and is prefabbed with a front of solid glass walls so nature is always in view. Even the 16m² (172 square foot) space can sleep 6 (a pop-up roof bedroom, plus one downstairs, as well as a double sofabed). Measuring approximately 13.3 meters long (43.6 feet), the Nautilus features a convertible roof system that expands into the second bedroom, foldable gangways, and space for solar panels along the rear deck.
Hoffman’s newest floating home the EiHome (“Ei” is German for egg) is an egg-shaped floating home with windows covering one side of the structure. A 50m² roof area can be covered with solar panels.

Is it really pi? I thought it was phi? I think it might have just been lost in translation. Good video tho!
My trigonometry is limited (and long lost), but I do think pi and phi are both linked to golden geometries.
@@kirstendirksen yeah you're right! It's just a detail in the end 😊
Though, in the end, you are right. At least I learned something through this, but will pin this so perhaps others will be aware of my error. Thanks for fact checking.
Kirsten Dirksen bruh the devil lies in the details lmfao
It's definitely phi not pi (I've just been teaching trig to my daughter during covid-19 lockdown -- earlier this week she was required to derive the value of phi using pythagorus rather than the standard way via the quadratic equation). Great video Kirsten, as always, and much needed at this time...
I've been watching this channel for many, many years now and I must say it never gets old. I appreciate the style. The natural ambient sound is fantastic.
Every time I go into the comments on Kirsten's videos I see overwhelming negativity which makes me sad... she works so hard and produces amazing high quality videos that are literally free for your enjoyment 😞
Kirsten you do amazing work and it is so appreciated!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Which overwhelming negativity? I can't see any? Even the like dislike ratio is really great.
@@waugse I mean people are always commenting "I wish you had done this" or "you should have done things this way" on every single video of hers. And yes I'm aware criticism is allowed but you can tell the amount of work that has gone into this channel it just seems to me that people don't appreciate it as much as they should considering this is all free content that they have chosen to watch. If they don't like the way she films or what she films and includes in her videos just watch something else similar instead of telling her how to make HER content
Nah. I’ll give you the negativity you seek as all things have yin and yang. She highlights elitists who hold individualistic paradises as examples when in fact most people will never h e the means to do any of this and that just the fact of humanity. Modernity requires ingenuity for communities not elite who hold aesthetic value above utility. We need utility not idealism. Functionality for people not individuals. Self importAnt asshats.
@@henrywolf5332 My other problem with this channel, and others like it, is that these airbnb and vacation rentals are presented as "homes", when their creators don't have any intention of living in them.
@@henrywolf5332 An individualistic paradise is just that, individual. These "elitists" have the means to create these structures but anyone with a sense of style, some basic tools and some paint can do the same to a lesser extent. Go buy some laminated fibreboard, a can of turquoise paint and turn your home into your own "individualistic paradise". I promise you won't regret it.
Honestly this is one of the most consistently quality channels on YT and I'm subscribed to a boat load.
This channel is easily an Emmy winning channel. HGTV wish they had this content.
Very beautiful boat. I would defintively love one for a lake or somewhere calm.
My only complaint is that their really selling it on the nautilus shell and their inspiratipn. But I dont see it. They have made a very beautiful organic shape. But putting a radius on a edge does not mimic the nautilus shell shape (logarithmic spiral).
I love that suspended floating fireplace that looks like it's dripping from the ceiling, great video,
Naval architecture is actually the discipline for designing boats and large ships you can learn at university. It includes an insane amount of engineering but also the aesthetic design.
Because fluid dynamics and turbulence is so damn complicated and structural design it is a really complex discipline.
WE LOVE YOU, KIRSTEN DIRKSEN! ❤️
My grandparents (german-American) lived on a house boat- it brings back great memories- we had so much fun - I miss them very much!
Its called the 'Golden Ratio' that is found in nature as the equation remains the same throughout... but the Nautilus tiny floating home does not represent that... looks nice aesthetically designed, functionality, great use of space...
I love seeing these homes, thanks for the tour. Fascinating interior design - especially the rounded edges, brilliant technology - airy and spacious. Everything about living in such a place so appealing!!
Absolutely one of the best channels on CZcams.
as a german who watches a lot of english content this video was so confusing for my brain 😃
Plus the subtitles... they missed quite some stuff the architect said.
As ususal, Kirsten, you have found a stunning design! I used to work with architects and designers and I think of the "Golden Mean" when I view this wonderful houseboat. I was in Amsterdam many years ago and loved the canal boats. I have always wanted to live in one. Perhaps someday I will. Thank you again. I am also glad to hear, just like all of your admirers, that you and your family are safe. I do believe good, healthy design will become part of our future.
It’s a big stretch to say that this boat is anything more than inspired by the idea of the golden ratio... it’s not . But cool anyway. Also, the creature is a wonky swimmer ... lol
I agree, just marekting. Guess they figured it out after finalising the house 😁
Yeah, it could’ve been an arch of a circle and it would’ve looked very much the same. Nice little house boat but has little to do with the golden ratio. A gray haired architect trying to sell that idea the whole time makes him look like foul.
@@iteerrex8166 I thought it was just an arc of a circle right?
None of the rounded elements looked like a segment of nautilus spiral to me?
It still looks beautiful so it's a great job but yeah - the architect selling it was a bit much.
Dejay Rezme Yes thank you for the correction ☺️
It would be nice to see an actual nautilus houseboat architecture, including ones at twice, three & four times the size. But this IS a beautiful house boat design!
Reminds me of all the houseboats on the river in Amsterdam, on the Amstel, when we had canoeing lesson for P.E.
Your videos are so relaxing.
Nice House Boats!! It's beautifully designed! ☺
That's a great looking boat
These are not only extremely functional, but aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
Very lovely houseboats.
Perfect for vacation, or weekend get-away.
Good Vibrations
Das Geschäft läuft großartig. Ich mochte das Video, das Sie mit mir geteilt haben. Danke
Magical floating home
Thanks 🙏
Stay safe

A M A Z I N G !!! Thank you Kirsten
Perfect "shoebox" still a shoe box mind!
This is an amazing design both on the water and on land. Thank you for showcasing Mr. Hoffman's work, Kristen.
Just Gorgeous!!
Supercool ideas...I've always loved preferred curved elements in architecture and would love a Nautilus or EiHome as a tiny house design on water or on land.
Wonderful!!
Love them for calm waters.
Modern, Simple and Elegant! Perfect!
So cool!!
What a cool houseboat.
Very nice! I love it!
Good Easter morning , from Tennessee, hope you and your family are healthy and safe, very unusual boat, I like all the curves !
I was just thinking of houseboats when you published this.
Kirsten I absolutely love your videos. I’ve been watching them for a while now. Do you have a Patreon account? I would love to support you. ❤️
These are very attractive. And with land prices going up in heavily settled harbor areas, this is a very practical idea for creating "neighborhoods" along coast lines.
Disagree on coast lines, this boat needs flat water and scant wind, best for small lakes. Any wind over 20 knots hitting perpendicular those sail-like cabin sides and steering will become difficult.
Can relocate to any place where the water takes you..beautiful design for maximum viewing the natural elements..reflected In this design.⭐.
👍😍I love this. 💝
Wow this would be perfect for my residence in Canada 🇨🇦 😍
Brilliant architecture.
Amazing
a curve does not make the nautilus
very excellent
lovely
I love the modern design with all the glass.
Awesome..love it too
Honestly I'd prefer a square shape to maximise the internal and external space, the curved area seems like a saste of both the internal volume and the surface area of the upper deck.
We were considering a piece of land recently that was mostly unbuildable floodplain. Our ponds & lakes need to be above the flood plain which left little dry land for a home. This shape of a floating home would have actually worked there since we can't stand square shapes in our habitats. Now we are realizing the opportunity lost due to this missing piece of the puzzle. Next time! and thank you for publishing!
A radiused edge does not a nautilus make. I understand the inspiration, but if I weren't being prompted to consider it, I wouldn't think, 'ah, nautilus,' at first sight of this houseboat. It's a nice design, but I'd like to see even more design innovation here that draws from the nautilus form.
Nature inspires . 😌👍
Maybe it's my hearing, clogged ears or something. Pi = π = 3.14159... = circumference / diameter ; Phi = φ = golden ratio = 1.618033... A small difference...
Thanks for clearing that up.
Bingo. They ARE both relative to sacred geometry, but differing relationships.
Einfach nur schoen!
Thanks Kirsten. Fantastic. But is it applicable to Caribbean waters? If part of had a glass bottom you could watch coral? Bless view to grateful for life in the morning. Are they selling the blueprints to build it with the curved top?
It would be blown over in the first storm, so you only want it in protected places waterways.
Now i want one
Seems superficial almost a gimmick it’s still a shoe box full of squares and rectangles
And strictly a flat water, small lake boat.
Also, curved edges within interiors are found in most boats, and they're not referencing Jules Verne.
h d No mate I just went whitewater rafting on my Nautilus house boat.
Great videos! Really enjoy them and might I say I appreciate how you don't make your face the main subject like some others... (nothing wrong with your looks just not the focus of subject matter)
I wanna see someone try and clean a dish in that sink haha
I saw these as part of the a UK television show about houseboat manufacturing. As a wheelchair user, I don't think they will be suitable for many Disabled people. The toilet is tiny.
Luv the simplicity and practicality of the layout and aesthetics overall. For “tiny living” a couple of people, np 👍🏽 Now about the costs? 😆 and how to get one for the Murray River, Australia? 🤔 👍🏼🇦🇺
I wish that other "interpreter" guy wasn't in the video, I can read subtitles quite fine and I found him to be such disruptive force in the video.
its almost like he was maliciously trying to ruin this video for everyone and did you notice him pouring gasoline on that boat in the backround. that guy is bad news...
Much better viewing experience.
COOOOL 💯😌
Hey Serr Güd Miss Dirksen! 😍🤗🙏

How are these connected to sewage systems? What are the rules (in Berlin, I guess) in regards to sewage removal from boats moored to a pier? Here in the US, well, SF Bay Area at least, people aren't allowed to live in their boats, partly because there aren't any continuous sewage connections.
Love these. But I would need, must have a large kitchen sink. I'd even give up counter space for a large sink.
wow jetzt sehe ich erst du hast mehrere wow ja runde Behausungen genau so sollte man bauen super respekt megs genial und die Lichter wundervoll ✨🙏🏻✨🔮💜🌿🧚🏼♀️🧚🏻♂️🌳🌴🌿🍀💚🌲🌳🌿
The one missing element for these homes when they sit on clear water is a glass floor panel for intimate contact with the submerged world. That would be very entertaining the living room and in the shower!
sweet houseboats!...i actually looked into them a little bit about a year ago when i was thinking of going houseboat instead of tiny home. now that i am way deeper into design and building, my only complaint would be that they are using 12v electrical when off-grid. 24v is a way better choice imo because you can waaay more power for your money. love this channel so much! always the dopest inspirational ideas, with such amazing videography and editing. *THANKS*
Still a shoebox, with rounded corners.Nice houseboat, though.
The electrical right behind the sink was ... weird. Maybe different codes for boats than terrestrial dwellings. Otherwise eye catching design.
Sucj ideas and designs, trying to apply and imitate everything here..hehe. thanks!
I love
Zero out of 10 for seaworthiness and facing headwinds. I get it now, if I operate my boat in reverse it is considered game changing.
After stints of merchant marine in my lifetime, I couldn't agree more. Wonderful open concept for docking, but it's a sail pulling you backwards and wasting fuel.
@@jackstrubbe7608 I'm sure the few naval architects that watched this video fell over laughing. I get it though, these things are meant to be cottages on the water, that occasionally go for a short cruise.
I don't think it's meant for open water.
@@ChrisPage68 I agree, but the architect's implication kept referring to them as boats and yachts and direction of sailing, which misdirected reality. He seemed pretty full of himself a lot of times, without clear base.
super intelligent mit den No-Ecken geil krass Genie
"aaaaahhh like an iphone?" "no no no" 😂😂😂
People with mobility devices or disabilities would not be able to access most of those facilities. Tight access would prevent it. I tend to agree with others, curved edges is not the same as nautilus.
Great video produced by you Kirsten dirksen none the less.
I love this design. Am sure that it was expensive to build...
In the movie "Life of Pi" Pi’s full name, Piscine Molitor Patel, was inspired by a Parisian swimming pool. The shortened form refers to the ration of a circle’s circumference divided by its diameter, a number that goes on forever without discernible pattern, what in mathematics is called an irrational number. I have never heard it as "Phi".
I love houseboats 😍 Search on "Boat a home" Kristen i think you would like it.
Hello Kirsten, I wonder where you all are spending the isolation, would like to know how all the family are doing during this times.
If I may answer, we've been home for quite a few weeks now. Never left the city, but we keep in touch with friends and family via the Net. Also homeschooling. We normally work from home, so the change hasn't been as dramatic for us as for others, and we try to help anytime we can. "World of Windows" came as an idea to inspire those who can find it specially hard and isolating these days. We are trying to build a sense of place and community for whoever wants to join and participate.
Thank you, I loved the world of windows concept, is relevance is more noticeable now, but actually is timeless. Would like to see more of the 2 previous you uploaded with the home owners perspective, it’s was so intimate.
@@marioromero3864 Thanks. Kirsten is planning to post at least one more episode on World of Windows, though she might extend it one more week if there's still a big amount of people in quarantine (either recommended or mandatory). It will depend on how useful it becomes for people as well. Kirsten may add her perspective here.
Nicolás Boullosa , looking forward! Thanks for answering. I am from the Dominican Republic, hopefully one day you ‘ll come over and explore over here.
We'd love to explore the Dominican Republic, but for now all travel feels far away. I am definitely adding one more episode of World of Windows and perhaps a 4th, depending on how I divide the remaining content (which keeps growing).
YOU GO EVERYWHERE?
wow
I wished that I lived near a salt water sea or ocean
What's the cost of this? can you please add base prices to your website for each model thanks!
جميل ➰☺🎼
👍👍👍👌☺️
I live in Europe, what is the price of that wonder ?
1.618Million dollars
I was happily watching till he mentioned the Phi.
So... why is this at all like a Tesla?
We love this design totally totally cool. 👍👍
He has the aerodynamics backwards. You would want the curved wall in the front. It looks nice, but a lot of wasted space in my opinion.
Google the Kalakala, the most wonderful ferry Washington State ever had. These are not new designs, but I am glad to see them resurrected in a renewed format.
😍👍🏻
the boat will be moving back & forth all day even if your boat stay in 1 spot?
to many windows people see u inside?
what if u get sea sick from the boat?
