DVNE - SĂ XIV - First Time Listen, Reaction & Breakdown | Composer Point of View
Thanks so much! This was a nice surprise. This is another band we're quite excited about! Newer video for "Towers" is a more proper studio performance.
Edit: We've got people in our office that played in bands, school band, and a staffer that went to Berklee and can rant about theory all day. Point is: we appreciate the in depth look at the how's and why's of metal! The rambling is what we're here for!
Aloha MBR Gang! Wow, thank you for your comment. Always wondered if the record companies either cringed or were stoked on my vids. Yea, as I started this channel I wanted to focus on the "pure" listeners experience and perhaps give them new sonic leads to dig into their favorite music. Side benefit is deeper awareness of what it take to craft a song through arrangements without going to down the circle of 5ths rabbit hole :) Again, thanks for the comment - Awwwwwright!
This comment is so cool. Never expected DVNE on this channel and the new album is sounding AWESOME. !!
This has become my favorite album of the year. Congrats to you guys and of course to the band on such a successful release!
My one stop shop for new music!
Their most recent album just blew me away. I was waiting for them to disappoint but they never did
I just discovered the band and the album and it is absolutely insanely fantastic.
One of the best modern bands in this genre. So good.
Great choice! I had the pleasure of seeing these guys peform Asheran album live to a crowd of less than 20. I think it is pronounced "Dune" because they have drawn inspiration from the Dune books by Frank Herbert (Songs of Arrakis is their bandcamp name and Arrakis desert planet in the books). Great books too!
That's awesome, would have loved to have seen that. I've seen that symbol used a lot to represent 'U' so I guessed it was Dune. âđ»đ€đ»
I pronounce it Dune
Aloha from Seattle!
Awesome group! It's often surprising to see the range of tunes you cover. I am loving the long Prog tracks. Great stuff. Keep it up!
Thanks for another fun video, you have made me try a lot of bands that I have seen around my social media but never had the patience to do. It's like discovering music with a friend, makes my long lockdown days a bit nicer!
You've finally surpassed the metal bands I already know, and now I get to start experiencing bands for the first time alongside you! I love it! I left a giant impassioned plea for you to check out one of my favorite songs of all time, the terribly named "IIIIIIIIIIII" by Krallice, the last song on their album Years Past Matter. It is so brilliantly arranged and uniquely composed, I would be SO happy to get some of your insight into it. Thank you for making so much fantastic content!
Every song that DVNE has put out recently have been phenomenal I cant wait for the full release
I'm still here! Only heard this track a couple of days ago for the first time, so had skipped over this video when it was first released. Fantastic track; will be listening to a lot more of them!
Still here, thanks as always for doing these vids, youâre awesome!
Still here man. Definitely going to look into into this band more after this listen.
That intro really got my anticipation up! Made it really gratifying when they came back in! Really enjoying this
diggin your channel man. Im a guitarist/musician of 18 years but what i really get from your channel is an outside view from someone who might not be entirely familiar with my fav genres of music. Its a really cool outside perspective on what you find appealing about our music! Super cool. Keep it up man!
Let's go Geebz. Can't wait for your first listen to Enslaved Havenless đ€
Holy hell this Rips. Great reaction, thanks for sharing
Still here! Been meaning to check out this band because I've seen some ads for their new album and was thinking about ordering it, but I hadn't got around to listening to a full song yet. Thanks to this, I think I'm gonna have to pick it up! Definitely kind of hitting some Mastodon/Baroness vibes that I'm pretty into.
Wow. Awesome to see the guys on stuff like this.
Really great song. Powerful and Melodic.. heavy and viscerally intense.. Groove heavy and diverse. Will definitely check out more. Solid breakdown
I love Dvne, I'm excited about the new album. Definitely take Metal Blade's advice and check out the performance vid of Towers! congrats on breaking 100k!
Still here. Pleasantly surprised- had never listened to this band before. Someone else said the sound like Mastodon and I can definitely hear that. Thanks for listening to some different bands, awesome as always.
I wouldn't say they sound like Mastodon. People say that because Mastodon is the most famous out of these Progressive/Sludge bands but they didn't invent that style. There tons of other bands even around that era they started.
Hi, really loving the content. Keep up the good work! Would really like to hear your take on something like Vildhjarta, swedish band whom have a very interesting sound of their own
This is a new one to me...
Kool, I gots to listen to more
These guys have one of my most favorite songs I've EVER heard: Sunset's Grace. It's an instrumental track and you would absolutely love it based in what I've heard you say about your preferences. It gives me that chicken skin every single time.
Fantastic band. Have been on them for a year or so. Asheran was their breakthrough album and is excellent as well. new album drops 3/19! thanks for reviewing.
Thank you for your heart-warming videos. More Radiohead please :)
I was lucky enough to catch these guys in Manchester supporting eyehategod, completely blew me away! Bought a CD to listen to on the way home and a vinyl for the collection
Go after some old school. Love to hear your review on Holy Diver đ€ Ronnie had some sick vocals
DVNE - THE CRIMSON PATH and the the whole ASHERAN album. Spectacular music
I'm still here. Saw you did a video on a song by The Ocean. Another great song of theirs I'd recommend is Permian: The Great Dying. Love the content!
Thank you so much for going through all these artists. So cool to see someone so open minded. Please do Gojira - The Art of Dying when you can.
Some great prog metal to check out - countless skies, borknagar and slugdge! Great channel, love the proggy stuff
Beâlakor too!
Just finished the Mars Volta Inertiatic video, definitely excited to see what comes next. I like how clearly you breakdown the styles, formats, and functions in these songs. I highly recommend you check out Blind Guardian whenever you feel up to power metal/symphonic metal. Personally, my favorite is "And Then There Was Silence" from the album "Night at the Opera", it's one of their most intricate but also the longest of their work (14 min) all about the last days of Troy.
OMG, you noticed the bass tone at the end!! (I thought I was alone with discovering that)
Hi Man! Your videos are very interesting and it's really a pleasure to listen to a song from different (engineering and composing) perspective. I would really love to see your analyze of Ulver - I Troldskog Faren Vild, because I think that's completely different style of music engineering. I would call it "purposely amateur", and of course that's a great piece of music in my opinion. All in all you're doing great job man! Greetings from Poland.
Can't wait to see you reach that 100k!
Suggestions (Updated!):
Unexpect - The Quantum Symphony
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Vodoo Mon Amour
Beyond Creation - Omnipresent Perception
Borknagar - Up North
Black Crown Initiate - Invitation
Native Construct - Mute
Cyborg Octopus - Discobrain!
Damn, we have the same musical taste! I second UneXpect - The Quantum Symphony. I'd take anything off that album though - such an underrated band.
I third Unexpect!
+1 for Diablo Swing Orchestra
I'm still here. Another great new band to checkout
Always Nice to learn about new Music.
I have to reccoment danish band MĂL and their song Bruna.
You got a shout out from metal blades on their CZcams page for this video!
This album is so good!
Found this band just a few days ago. Especially blown away by their song Omega Severer.
Anyway, suggestion: react to Residual by Katatonia if you decide to revisit them. Well it's hard to choose just one from their discography but that one's one of the proggiest ones so I recommend that.
BTBAM: Turn On the Darkness, The Ectopic Stroll, or The Proverbial Bellow đđ€đ» still here Geebz, this band caught my attention and I'm going to dive into their full-album experience đđ»
They sound a bit like Mastodon when they first came out. Good stuff
Yeah, Ăsland popped right into my head.
That's true! I don't really understand about music theory but some parts reminded me a lot of them đ€
They sound like a cleaner Mastodon (Leviathan era) mixed with post sludge metal. Some parts of their songs sound a lot like Isis too.
I wouldn't say they sound like Mastodon. People say that because Mastodon is the most famous out of these Progressive/Sludge bands but they didn't invent that style. There tons of other bands even around that era they started.
I'm still here đ this was a great one - I don't mind the "blah, blah, blaaah" at all! Spacing out on James name though...holy smokes...đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł happens to the best of us at times!
Symphony X - The odyssey. One day it'll happen
Yes!
We still at it !
This was interesting, nice one, I'm still here.
Great video deconstruction & interesting new band (first listen makes me think of a mix between Mastodon & Russian Circles, but there's apparently more....Nice pick anyway !
Check out:
Teramaze - An Ordinary Dream (Enla Momento)
Fates Warning - And Yet It Moves or The Light and Shade of Things (for starters)
OSI - anything by them
Redemption - The Death of Faith and Reason
IHLO IHLO IHLO
Man you review the best stuff. Haha
Asheran is one of my favourite albums ever -- just incredible from start to finish, and their new album is _even better_. Album of the year for me. This song gives me goosebumps every time. On their guitar playthrough video, Victor calls it, "ess eye fourteen", if that helps.
Oh man I hope you listen and react to the band Isis. Hand of the Host is a good song to start with.
Oh man, such a great band. Pity their name got a bit tainted later on for reasons far beyond their control.
Nice to see some DVNE - I really like their Album "Asheran". Good to hear some new stuff!
There's another band where I'd be curious about a reaction / breakdown and that is Disillusion.
Recommendations to maybe start with:
Disillusion - the sleep of restless hours
Disillusion - Alea
I had this album recommended to me yesterday and I was instantly hooked. Was going to come and suggest you take a listen only for CZcams to show me you've already done a reaction :)
When I hear people bemoaning the state of metal nowadays I just think they're not stepping out of their comfort zones, because there's tonnes of bloody excellent stuff being released all the time.
It's just being released by smaller bands and you have to make an effort to find it :)
Their name is just the âkvultâ way to spell âDune,â which I only figured out by visiting their website a long time ago and saw a reference to âsongs of Arrakis.â Itâs appropriate because they write epic, Sci-fi concept/story albums. As for the name of the song, I canât say specifically, but itâs probably a place or name of something from the story of this album.
Got a heavy one for you when you are in the mood.
TO THE GRAVE | âąREC |
Aloha! Big big train - east coast racer (live) . Can be found on youtube. Really really good prog song esp second half. Coming from a big fan of porcupine tree, opeth, tool, dream theater. You can trust me big man ;-)
Fuck yeah! It is a really long song so I wouldn't blame Geebz if he didn't want to do it, but if he does I know he'd love it! Even if he didn't do that track, he should do something by BBT.
I'd love Transit of Venus too
Still here :D
Awesome channel. I Love how you break stuff down but don't get overly technical. Please do a reaction to Cardiacs, one of the most underrated and madly inverntive bands of the last 30 years. The Everso Closely Guarded Line or Fiery gun Hand are great places to start. Cheers!
I love your videos! I would like to see a reaction video to Halestorm.
Love these guys, they've been making waves lately after getting picked up by Metal Blade Records. They're called Dune, but it's already a book so not really an option lol. Their music is very much inspired by that book, actually.
Life IS wonderful đ
First! Please do a Byzantine and Wheel video!! I will worship you forever haha
Geebz... Brandon has the right idea here... Nobody beats the BYZ!
Yes! Byzantine!
I was deep into Tangerine Dream last night, so the intro definitely misled my brain, lol. The rest of the song has me needing to listen to Mastodon's Ăsland as soon as this is over.
Some of Enter Shikari's early work is a similar sound to this! If you like the mix between synth and metal please check out their songs, 'OK Time For Plan B', 'Sorry You're Not a Winner', 'No Sssweat' and 'Anything Can Happen In The Next Half Hour'.
Please do either Russian Circles or IAH or Black Hill or Heklaa
I love Tool but I also love that you are exploring other bands and genres.
Still here. And goddamn that ripped. Like others have said, it's definitely reminiscent of Mastodon, but that ain't a bad thing.
The band name btw is pronounced as "dune". They're a Progressive Sludge/Stoner Metal from Edinburgh, Scotland. Idk how I missed this notification, I recently discovered this band and I love to see your view on this!
You totally needed more people to see this :(
The Raven that Refused to Sing - Steven Wilson!! :D
This song gets me everytime. I get weepy just thinking about this song. The lyrics combined with the atmosphere created here is just so amazing. Melancholy on its finest for sure. Beauty in the sadness.
Super emotional, beautiful song!
Nice, needed this lol. Seen the name but not got around to them yet, on the list now for sure. đđ» Lol at brain fart, taught myself rhythm guitar to Metallica & Anthrax cos they're accessible so I get what you meant đ€Łâđ»đ€đ»
gonna keep suggesting a little list of stuff for you to check out.
vektor - cygnus terminal.
atramentus - stygian III.
a silver mt. zion - what we loved was not enough.
mgĆa - exercises in futility V.
light bearer - primum movens.
how about a song off of the most expensive record ever produced? my bloody valentine - when you sleep.
keep up the good work man!
vektor is sick as hell
@@BirdNoise77 *was
@@charlieo.possum5501 shit u right. They released two tracks recently but they kinda suck imo
@@BirdNoise77 yeah, that and the whole WIFE BEATING thing, hard to enjoy the music and support them (him, since the rest of his band quit after this) knowing that...but I still dig the music
@@charlieo.possum5501 wait what wife beating thing????
I'm still here :)
Amazing content and fun as always. Thank you so much!
Could you do a reaction to a new prog rock band that hasn't blown up yet but has a ton of promise? You could expose them to a lot of new viewers. I am not affiliated, I am just a huge fan of Moon Tooth. I would suggest Awe At All Angles or Through Ash . Thank you!
â€đ€
I;m still here
Dude, nice, never thought you'd be listening to these guys!! Excellent "stoner metal" band. Good call đ
Was just listening to their first album earlier today, can't wait for the new one, out soon!!
HOWDY FROM NEW ENGLAND...GREAT SONG DEF NOT WHAT I EXPECTED WAAY MORE MELODY...BTW GOJIRA HAS A NEW SONG OUT CALLED BORN FOR ONE THING...PERHAPS SINCE YOU REALLY LIKED THE 2 GOJIRA TRACKS YOU'VE HEARD HERETOFORE AND YOU WILL DEF DIG THIS ONE TOO...THE NEW ALBUM DROPS APRIL 30 AND ITS TITLED: FORTITUDE...KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK...PEACE FROM THE NORTHEAST...
Wow this is cool! Reminds me of Isis. You should give Isis - Hall of the Dead a listen
Gonna second that. But apparently people have to be careful posting ISIS tracks, because CZcams's moderation algorithm assumes they're promoting the terrorist group.
Damn terrorists ruining my favorite band's name.
You should do the song Dead Heart Confession by White Ward. They're a Ukrainian Experimental/Post-Black Metal band with a saxophone player. I'm sure you'll find it fascinating!
FYI Dvne have 2 singers, so thatâs where the contrast comes from
Can you please react to either Hunger Strike - Temple of the Dogs or Gasoline - Audioslave...both Chris Cornell and both amazing songs. I'd be really interested to see your take on one of them!
I'm still here!âą Awwwwwright!Âź
Rolo tommassi "a flood of light"... You know in two years when you have time
Rolo! Loved their album cosmology. Havenât checked them out since. Thanks for the reminder!
@@coreymcnaught oh man there most recent record (time will die and love will bury it) is beautifuly brutal.
Yeeeeees! Rolo Tomassi is wonderful, and both cosmology and time will die are really special and beautiful albums
Death - Flesh and the Power it Holds
Check the album Asheran by Dvne. Easily one of my favs
How Heavy This Axe by The Sword is a song suggestion. Yes, it is, me, well done stating obvious. đ€Ș
Coffee, nug, and gummie sir! đ»
This song is sick... very nice choiceđ”đŒđ¶
For your "Power of the Bass", hit up Adam Neely (He's Here on CZcams) and see if he'd do a Discord colab/interview (and he probably would love to do it)
He knows a lot and is very good at what he does... just like you đ
Here's a heavy genre you might not have heard of: Funeral Doom Metal. These songs are not short, The Book of Kings by Mournful Congregation exceeds 30 minutes. Other songs of theirs are great as well, "Mother - Water, the Great Sea Wept", "Whispering Spiritscapes" "The Rubaiyat", "The Monad of Creation", "Skyward Gaze, Earthward Touch", "White Cold Wrath Burnt Frozen Blood".
Ahab would be another excellent band to explore. "Old Thunder" is under 10 minutes.
But it would be interesting to hear a composer break down songs that are epic and slow like that.
It takes a lot of commitment to get into a funeral doom tune...
You need to check out the band Heilung!
Start with the song "In Maidjan", i can almost guarantee you'll get hooked, because their music is so unique and beautiful!

Heya Geebz! As a former concert band geek and now metalhead I have come to love and appreciate your posts! I always get excited when I see a new upload! If you donât mind, Iâve got a suggestion that would be good to get your thoughts on. The first is a classic by my favourite band Epica, who, as it happens, just released a new album named Omega TODAY. This song, Consign to Oblivion, is from the early years and remains the closer for all their concert. It features pretty much every element of Epica - from the classically trained vocals of Simone Simons and the death growls of Mark Jansen to the extended orchestral sections combined with a sort of death metal, this song is most representative of their style. Iâve got lots of other suggestions, but I thought Iâd start here - looking forward to more of your posts!
czcams.com/video/dkqyyUTCMUQ/video.html
Geebz is that a dunlop purple big stubby pick on your keyboard there?
YEP!!! :)
Im still here, bro!
ALOHA DERRICK!!!!!
@@KeyOfGeebz Geebz, my dude!
Iâm hearing a similarity to Battlelore. Especially the vocals.
Hello, please react to the song Tarka y ocarina of Los Jaivas.
Didn't expect to see Dvne here, quite low on the radar still. But if liked, should check out ISIS. "Isis - So Did We" is their most popular song, but personnally i like " ISIS - Celestial (The Tower)" more. Or "ISIS - Deconstructing Towers" is interesting too, but more challanging.
Or something completely different and wack, like Giraffes? Giraffes!
Ulver - Eos
WHERE IS THE ONE?!
Chicken Skin Suggestion:
Cherry Waves by Deftones.
đ€đ€đ€đ€đ€
Still here, gimmie a gummi.
