    Just a little tip for you.
    When using the ruler to draw the line around the edge, if your using an ink pen of any kind, turn the ruler over and use that side.
    The reason being is that you will notice it has slopped edges.
    Those edges are there so that when you draw an ink line, the ink doesn't touch the ruler edge and bleed on the paper or cause other marks.
    Some great drawing.
    I love drawing with pen, i love not only how it looks when finished but the feel of it on paper.

    You are perfection Gareth. Thanks a bunch for uploading this vid.
    I have done some sketches with pencil. And I have been searching youtube to understand how to get the smooth skin finish from a ballpoint pen. This is first vid where I could get some hang of it - so just like when done using a pencil, we need to select a pen with broad ball tip and shade the area using the hatching steps but very very light hand.... My problem with using a pen is that shading an area starts showing lines. I don't have this trouble when shading with a pencil.

    Hey Gareth. Big fan of your work. I have a technical question. Seeing as ballpoint pen ink isn't archival, do you use a fixative spray? If so which one. I just did an experiment on bic biro as I have sold a couple of pieces and the spray totally ruined the ink (luckily I didn't spray the actual pieces, I tried on a piece of scrap paper first... Phew!!) Thanks in advance. D :-)

    • @GarethEdwardsArt
      @GarethEdwardsArt  Před 8 lety

      David Philips Hey David, that is a great question. Unfortunately it is not archival no. You can only preserve it as best as you can. Find UV filtering glass and keep it out of direct sunlight. Also, try not to touch the paper, the oils in your hand turn the ink yellow. I've had that a lot in the past. I doubt there is a spray you can use.
      Its just going to be a part of the art. If looked after it will last many many years, if not, it will fade and discolour. Just part of the course with ballpoint pen.

    • @GarethEdwardsArt
      @GarethEdwardsArt  Před 8 lety

      @CurdledSteak Před 7 lety

      GarethEdwardsArt oh okay. How long does it take you to do a portrait?
      I watched your video on shading
      You said using parallel lines. My question is does it matter how long the lines are or the line supposed to be small?
      Thanks for the help. I hope you answer back.

    • @GarethEdwardsArt
      @GarethEdwardsArt  Před 7 lety

      Thanks for watching. Yes that is correct, for my style anyway.
      My lines are quite short, maybe about 1cm on average, but for larger areas of shading they can be longer, and fine details, obviously smaller. But remember to curve the lines slightly to follow the contours of the skin.

    • @CurdledSteak
      @CurdledSteak Před 7 lety

    I just did my first ball point pen portrait and it was VERY aggravating. The pen started cutting out half way through and I couldn't draw light lines. Is it cause of oil that was on my fingers smearing on the page? That's my only conclusion cause the pen would work fine on another piece of paper.
