Eric Burdon & The Animals
Album American Dreams
lyrics
There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God, I know I'm one
My mother was a tailor
Sewed my new blue jeans
My father was a gamblin' man
Down in New Orleans
Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and a trunk
And the only time that he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk
Oh mother, tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun
Well, I've got one foot on the platform
And the other foot on the train
I'm going back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain
Well, there is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many young poor boy
And God, I know I'm one

I'm imagining a film where a young man, who's life has been destroyed by the vice of gambling, decides to burn the place that ruined his life to the ground (circa 1923), he dies in a shoot-out with the police several years later after he is found to be connected to the arson, he dies in the middle of reloading his bolt action Mauser rifle, loose bullets in hand
what movie is this i want to watch it 💀
@@koivouu it doesn't actually exist
It should exist! You should write a script and send it to Stephen Spielberg!! I'm a writer. I'd edit and stuff for you. It's one hell of an idea and these days it seems writers can't come up with original ideas. Always copying old classics and revamping them to pure crap. This is a gangster western. Someone I think should be the lead role during his grown-up days? Sam Elliott or Timothy Olyphant. During his childhood days? Maybe Shia LaBeouf. Couldn't think of anyone else. Do it! What's the worst that could happen? They steal your idea and don't give you credit. That would suck. So get it copywritten!
@@crayonchomper1180 damn, most of the time people say stuff like this the joke is that its an actual movie. thats an amazing plot idea, publish it 😂
You should actually do that

I live in Louisiana, and I gotta say, it fits really well. Of course, New Orleans is far from its old Southern ways, but I can't help but blast this on the radio I modified to sound old. There's nothing quite like it.
It's amazing just how well the song's held up to time.
I've actually found the place in New Orleans when I was on a tour

Same, did you check The voice with the little girl Georgia, she's awesome.

It's amazing how talented our grandparents were!
Same remembers me of my enemies in games
As a freshman entering highschool, I might as well use this song to listen to while walking in the hallways, love rock n roll music, thanks to my grandpa. I honestly don't like my generation music that much but I like older generation music .
Same man, same.
Exactly the same, except I'm British
oh you poor soul, dont worry youll grow out of that phase lmao, everyone has gone through it. Now I am not saying that this isnt a great song, of course it is, but there is plenty of good music nowadays, you justn havent found it yet. You will find what you like even in modern music, and you will also realize you dont look as cool as you think when walking down a hallway listening to this, although I hope you already realized that lmao

song is almost sixty years old, and Never gets old listening to it
the song is much older / this is a cover
nobody actually knows who originally wrote the song too!
Yes
Actually it might've been made in 1600s
The original is by Lead Belly from the 1930s
If you’re wondering, the reason a bunch of the lyrics are wrong is because there are a dozen different evolutions of the song with slightly different lyrics and the creator accidentally put the wrong set of lyrics on the animals version.
I watched a video about it, crazy how modern music was inspired
When I was in the states, we would turn this up in the car during the Orange sunset it was so calming. They were the days of rock n roll!
yes sir.. will never be the same........
Where are you from? 🙂
I'm from Australia 🇦🇺 😊
No doubt the days of real music.
Now us in the states moving out to Australia 😂 states ain't what they once were either
So, this is a child's nostalgic memory. When I was in my old house, my mother used to use the car a lot, meaning that id hear this alot. But then, I moved a few years earlier. Today, I literally heard this song on my old fashioned radio, as soon as I woke up. It was so nostalgic that I searched up ''House Of The Rising Sun'' And found more nostalgic songs. Thank you for taking me down memory lane, Wind Music. It really made me cry. -A happy listener.
Loved this song, summer of 1964 was my last good innocent year. In December 7 of my dear cousins perished in a fire which was arson committed by their father while drunk. It was sad, I always thought The House of the Rising Sun was the penitentiary. Now, after reading the lyrics, I realize it was an after-hours gambling joint! This song still resonates deeply within my soul and brings tears to my eyes that refuse to stream down my cheeks! This old music keeps me going.
i'm pretty sure it was also about a whore house as well.
DearGod, I am so sorry.
Such a sad story and memory for you. May your cousins RIP
I'm sorry, are you ok?
Pretty sure the song is about a very notorious whore house which was located on the outskirts of new orleans, not a gambling joint.
His voice is amazingly fitting for this song
This song evokes tons of memories for me since my dad was a Gambian man. To me this genre of music has country appeal & remains timeless. ❤️😍😎💕
gambling or Gambian?
🎰 or 🇬🇲?
Allowing music to transform you back to a time and feeling that calms you is the treasure you'll never find anywhere else.
My dad used to hear this masterpiece when i was a kid. Now i realize how cool my dad was!!
I just LOVE this song!!! Played it for band a few years ago, and it’s been my favourite since. ❤️
This song make me remember my childhood(i'm just 16,used to live in a small village in eastern europe, with a breath taking view,a lot of wasterns, vikings and cool TV shows, near a small forest and with a huge imagination,it was beautiful to wake up in the morning and see the sun rise from the hills and see the orange light hit the houses and your face)
Even if your finding it from some app or funny video, im glad young people are hearing the music i grew up loving, it brings a smile to my face
"DRAFTED"
When I hear a song like this it just gets my writing juices flowing. You can plot the story a multitude of ways just from the ambiance the song brings.
It never gets old…
I don't know why this is, when you find a good modern song it sticks with you for a few days, but when you find an old good folk song it sticks with you for a week or more.
or years…

bro i don’t remember hearing this ever in my life but it still feels nostalgic bruh
I found a Bardcore/Medieval style cover of this with adapted lyrics and it occurred to me I’ve never listened to this song in its entirety and decided to remedy that. And now that I’ve listened to it I can honestly I quite enjoy this song… and Tragically i kinda vibe with it… while I’m not much of a gambler I do have my vices, and i can feel and understand the pain of the songs’ focal character. I’m sure we all have something like that and can relate to some degree.
Edit: Don’t worry about me this comment isn’t a call for help directed at strangers. Just my personal thoughts and feelings on this hauntingly beautiful song

I truly appreciate my parents for always having all kinds of music playing in our home. They always said keep your mind open to everything. I did the same thing and my children appreciate all kinds of
music. They like all genres of music. Nothing better then singing songs along with your children . Great memories! Hotel California one of my family’s favorite. ♥️🥰
Who is the author of this forever master piece?
My parents did too.
So do I.
Now I do it with my grandchildren.

YEAH YEAH YEAH
Yes
Always listen to the ABSOLUTE CLASSICS
Always listen to the ABSOLUTE CLASSICS
this gives me nostalgia of the 1960s
and i was born in 2002
The song was originally written and sung from the perspective of a woman who had to return to the brothel for lack of options and other opportunities. The Animals changed it around and made it an absolute classic.
As much as I love The Animals and this song, this is not my favorite version. But instead, due to the raspy, raw vocal delivery and the simple, hypnotically engaging and dark acoustic guiitar, I can't help but close my eyes, squeeze them shut and strain my muscles and my jaw and tighten every part of my body, sometimes producing a flood of tears that are only conjured in moments of true beauty, passion, creativity and wonder. And for me, as if my opinion matters to any of you strangers, Bob Dylan's rendition is THE definitive version in my life. Recorded when Dylan was only 19 years old, it truly haunts me in the most overwhelmingly beautiful way possible!
Oddly enough it was on hearing the Animals version of this song that inspired Dylan to go electric.
Eric Burdon was magnif.
Love It !! This was my second Kareoke song I ever sang , the first was The Beatles Can't Buy me Love , but I think I know how he felt singing this song, cause I got up there and I knew the words by ♥ and I let it loose !! Standing Ovation People I'm not lying !! This song digs deep into your soul !!
What a decade , of the finest 1960’s music ,
Not so sure this song is about gambling in the sense people think it is. The House of the Rising Sun was a brothel in New Orleans. The house had ruined many a poor boy’s lives. He lived in sin & misery. His dad was only satisfied when he was drunk & had his suitcase. He was going to stay the night and he showed his son his ways and now it’s got him hooked, hence the ball & chain. 😅 But either way, great song.
I remember the same keyboard in music class in high school, was always putting it on and getting shouted at. But originally i heard it on an episode of heartbeat... Loved it ever since😊

I imagine like the end part of like a type of GTA movie where Everyone is walking into the sunset after a massive fight
there are traces of this song having been passed down and slightly altered over time ever since even the early 1600's. constantly being changed over time from word of mouth, being traced back through generations.
I associate this song with my dad. This is his era of music, but he also has a habit of gambling. He’s had good days and bad days with it. Still, that’s what you get when you’re a hard-working working class man who loves within an hour’s drive of two of the most prominent casinos in the USA, if not the world. My family and I have a love/hate relationship with that habit of his. It’s brought us both some benefits and some detriments to our lives.
This is one of my favourites

It’s funny how the most popular rendition of the most popular American folk song was sung by the Brit’s. I can’t even be mad it sounds that good

Is it just me, or do songs like this just kinda carry a depressing tone?
Like, when you're listening to it, it clears your mind, but allows those thoughts of like "what even is the meaning of life" to intrude.
Probably just me.

“And as the sun slowly sets on a burning building and boy, running as fast as he can, from a gambling addicted father, he starts to realize he has made one of the worst desicions of his life, 20 years down the road he’s met by gun fire and then a shot connects, this poor boy is no more, he no longer stands strong he now lay on his back on the inside of the house of the rising sun” *roll the end of the movie scene and then it cuts to the beginning*
