Once again, the comment I made on this video before it went live was deleted.
Anyway, had a lot of fun making this. Despite the fact that it took a whole month, it was quite rewarding to do. So fun in fact, I plan on doing the same thing for God Of War. Although I've come to realize there are so many God of War clones, that it would have to be a multi-part series. Also, because God Of War tends to be much more extensive, I'll probably only be covering 5 games at a time.
    Just one more thing.
Are you brave enough to solve the secret codes in this video? Perhaps when you do, you might find out some secrets about the man behind the mask. Perhaps even... The other half. Also, don't scan that QR code.

also fun fact about vigilante 8 is that it also has combo system as well. An example of one of the combo's you can use turns the seeker missile into a turbo booster, another combo turns the mortar into a tactical nuke which can all be utilized using certain button inputs on the d-pad. This in turn gives Vigilante 8 and second offense a lot of depth to its combat.

oh and about the stat drops from enemies, idk if you’ve already found this out but if you collect 50 of a certain stat a cosmetic accessory is put on the car(ram bars, spoiler, etc.) and if you collect 100 of every stat the entire chassis is upgraded to a badass “hotrod” version

Did I miss it or did he leave out how each weapon has 3 alternative fire modes. Vigilante 8 was one of my favorite games growing up, to answer some of your questions: Whammies are basically combos, some weapons can be used that take longer to hit the enemy than others, causing 2 hits at the same time = a whammy. Totaling a vehicle is done with weapon specials (which you also failed to mention and I assume were not aware of), each weapon you pick up has 2 special attacks done in fighting game style button sequences. The game booklet that came with the game would give you one of the two specials for each weapon, and it was up to you to figure out the second secret one. The second one is the same code with the third direction reversed, for example if you equip the bullseye rockets you can do the weapons "roadrunner" special with the combination - UP, DOWN, DOWN, [Machine Gun] which launches a single missile out that will attach to an enemy vehicle and propel them against their will in whatever direction it goes, while the second special "Stampede" is done with the combination - UP, DOWN, UP, [Machine Gun], which fires all of its missiles like a machine gun really fast. To total an enemy- when you kill an enemy their car stalls and the horn begins honking, then after a few seconds they explode. The stall and horn is your "finish them" timeframe, landing a weapon special (one that does damage) on them will cause them to explode, leaving behind a black, charred frame of their vehicle

  • @thematt6705
    @thematt6705 Před 8 měsíci +6

One major mechanic you didn't mention about Vigilante 8 is the fact that every weapon has a few special abilities that can be activated by inputting a sequence of D-pad inputs before firing. The homing missiles can be used to give you a speed boost, the turret can be fired in a buckshot spread, there are a bunch I can't remember. They're all written in the instruction book but nowhere in the game, so if you're emulating, easy to see why you missed them.
You get a Whammy when you hit the opponent with a combo. I think a vehicle special or weapon special has to be part of the combo. When you get one, your next attack does bonus damage. You can extend the combo to get double and quad whammies. So the idea is you use weapon specials to get a whammy, then use another powerful special like the buckshot to do crazy damage. The dune buggy with its minigun special is really good at getting double/quad whammies, letting you one-shot enemies with the buckshot.

Ah man, Vigilantee 8, that was the car combat game we had during our time on the PS1. Still good memories of mastering the weapon combos and finding the secret areas (and infuriating my dad by abusing both of these on versus.) As far as total and whammy, iirc whammy is indeed as stated, where it's just multiple weapon attacks timed with each other, whereas Total is specifically hitting a dying enemy with a combo ability or special weapon to instantly destroy them. Just extra flairs.
Honestly the combo moves are always what makes Vigilantee 8 stand out to me the most, short little 3-button combos on the directionals that do these nice little effects. By far the one I always abused was Afterburner (Up-Up-Up Fire MG) with the homing missiles, as it allowed a much easier time getting into the hidden areas on levels with some of the slower, clunkier vehicles like Milo and his school bus.

17:26 Totalling was using a special move on a wrecked car. TBP may not have known they existed: You would - for example - press 'left, right, down, fire' with the turret to perform The Cow Puncher; a green shot that used a few bits of ammo and launched your opponent into the distance! I think each of the mortar, missiles, etc, all had two unique and interesting special moves and obviously performing these moves while trying to keep the vehicle going where you wanted it to was super hard! An amazing innovation in the genre IMO

A few things to note about it, each world has a unique boss to fill out the gap of... I think a total of 8 characters to face off each time (the Bull for the Western world, T. Wrecks for the jungle level, Count Earl for Transylvania, and Brian the Brain for the future world). The flag mode is extremely frustrating, but it is doable. And in order to unlock a character's ending, such as Violet's ending, you have to do each level (4 worlds, and 3 levels each) for each of the 3 modes.

I wouldn't call it a full Twisted Metal knock-off title, but it is still within the realm of vehicular combat of the 90's are two particular titles (technically 3) I grew up with: Interstate '76 (as well as Nitro Pack / Nitro Riders) and it's sequel, Interstate '82. '76 is a great game, loved it, and I still play it once in a while since GOG has the complete Arsenal Pack that has all the games. '82 is definitely the weaker game, but it's still alright. "Totaling" a car in Vigilante 8 requires you to bring their health to zero without overkilling them. The best way to do this is to use your basic gun when the enemy health is low to finish them off. When the message appears, simply strike with any special weapon. Missiles or that yellow cannon are the easiest weapons to total vehicles with. As for "Whammies", it's striking an enemy with multiple special weapons at a time. Hot swapping special weapons while firing or mixing them with mortar strikes are easy methods to pull of a whammy.

Totaling only triggers with special weapons and hidden weapon moves that don't require a special weapon. Vigilante 8 on the N64 teaches you that a little bit during loading screens. (Tip: when you have lockon missiles, use button combination "Up-Up-Up +machine gun," to trigger after burners.) Pretty much the "modern Mortal Kombat" of auto combat games.
Hidden weapon combos can be seen as brutalities/fatality variance and normal special weapons are practically "Free" easy fatalities.
The Vigilante 8 games are reminiscent to fighting games. Whammys are nothing special, just the equivalent of "4x combo or 8x Hit". Totaling is more of a taunt or Overkill outside of survival, while totaling in survival in the N64 version of Vigilante 8, then later the PSX, Dreamcast, and N64 versions of Vigilante 8: Second Offense gives you health back. And totaling in V82 drops more upgrade pickups outside of survival.

    - Plot wise, the game isn’t the classic “Free For All” like TM is, where each vehicle has a certain wish they want to achieve. The game instead pits certain vehicles in one group, the “Vigilantes”(good guys) against other vehicles, the “Coyotes” (bad guys). If you picked a character from the Vigilantes, you would only face Coyotes vehicles, all except one. This one you don’t face is essentially the “Final Boss” and would appear with an overload of weapons and specials in the final level after you beat all other players.
The weapons themselves have button combinations you can enter to enhance their abilities, these abilities could actually alter the map as well. I remember one of the weapons shot something into the sky and would make a permanent dent on the map. These special abilities were actually pretty awesome.
Story wise the game didn’t have much depth, but you could see in some endings that other characters on the same side would interact with one another. It wasn’t as good as TM storytelling but some endings were interesting to watch.
V8 was definitely one of my favorite games of all time and I honestly liked the gameplay a bit more than twisted metal

I can its a niche style and when indie games are costing millions to make and triple a titles are running up block buster film costs they don't have time for a dedicated fan base of a few hundred thousand dedicated fans when they have no idea how to monitize it the closest thing I've seen is a moba called heavy metal machines and you basically have different cars with 3 specialized attacks and play mostly 3 v 3 modes like moving a ball to the enemies goal while destroying each other and they monetize it by releasing skins and new characters (cars) you can buy

I agree with you about the Story Mode being too long for each character, and how some of the objectives really suck - AND losing one of your weapon slots for the pickups (Though, the nice part about doing the story mode in co-op is that my dad and I would take turns being the one to carry the mission objectives!)
However, something interesting to note about your "it's essentially the exact same game" comment - there's a cheat code that lets you play the original levels from the first Vigilante 8. That's right, all the assets of the first game are still taking up space on the disk of the sequel!

To total enemies in Villante 8, you needed to do a special attack OR an command input on a regular weapon. At least I THINK that's what it was. I remember figuring that out and doing it all the time, but It's been years. V8 was a lot of fun tho. I loved the hell out of how all the cars felt like they had weight, and the goofy stuff that happened as a result of the physics where always amusing. You could also pretty much demolish like everything in the stages, which I also found fun. Just go on a rampage with mx enemies and wreck everything.
Some of the command inputs on the weapons were wacky too. Like the "crater maker" giant shot you could do with that long range sky hammer. It was like, D,D,U, fire, and costed 5 ammo, but left a big hole in the ground and did tons of damage if it hit. The turret also had a wacky blow-back shot that was like L,R,U, Fire or something that sent the target spinning away.

vigilante 8 second offense co-op with a friend was some of the funnest sht ever. You could do all the singleplayer modes (except for survival), including storymode, with a friend. And if you didn't know...there are cheat codes that let you unlock ALL THE LEVELS from the original game! I don't remember exactly but I think u could also unlock the cars from the first game as well....so it litearlly had the entire first game within the second game under the cheatcodes which is insane!!!! Also 'rapid fire' cheatcode, once u turn that on u won't ever want to play without it ever again. So much fun during sleepovers. It had some minor issues like player 2 couldn't use upgrades....which was really annoying and meant letting player 1 get the kills usually so they could use the stat pickups and eventually turn into the final-skin (can also unlock via cheatcodes). And ur right the weapon pickups destroying ur ultimate was something to watchout for. u Learnt to deal with it though...I remember enemies, or my friend/me, ramming cars into weapon pickups and them losing their ultimates....was funny. The blue corvette's windblast special was stupidly overpowered and sort of ruined the game a bit....if fires at range and hits u go flying and need to try and recover before they getup close to u....if its fired closerange at u...u also go flying but recieve the highest damage imaginable. It makes his special just blatantly overpowered and impossibly to counter most of the time....I never figured out a way to counter it in 1v1 anyways or compete with the killing ability in coops storymode/arcade etc. The dreamcast version played smoother but had worse graphics. the n64 version had slowdown issues but way better graphics and animations....the little purple car's minigun would fire through windows and have amazing cool effects against the bus etc...on the dreamcast tho it would just be a generic explosion animation...but u got used to the faster more arcadey feel of the dreamcast version even if it had worse graphics and less animation...they were like different games honestly the n64 vs dreamcast versions were.

Or replace the V8 2 disc for the first game in order to play Vigilante 8 levels in Vigilante 8 2nd Offense.
It also has some extra complexity with the weapons, with specific button combinations you can turn them into special attacks, at the price of more ammo. Like turning mines into hover tracking ones, or turning the usually weak mortar into a meteor that literally digs their grave by making a hole in the ground. Once you learn the codes, you won't be using them regularly ever again!
Also V8 2's RPG elements are great to add like an extra objective. If you fill the extra upgrade bars, you'll get a brand new accessory for the car, but if you fill them all, you'll get a complete overhaul and remodeling. Getting the upgrade tokens may be annoying, but if you total your enemies (finish them with a special weapon or a special attack with a regular weapon) you'll get 3 tokens instead of one. Or you can just type LLADORTOH on the cheat code screen to upgrade them all, lol.

The fact that CPUs were always keeping the heavy ammo for you is why I sort of had a love/hate relation with the Twisted Metal games. I much prefer the Vigilante 8 games where all the CPUs are supposed to be against you, makes more sense that way.

Since you mentioned Ps1 emulation, have you tried Racing Lagoon yet? That game may have made it's way into my top 10 all time since I played it a few months ago when the translation was finally released

Oh man Roadkill and Vigilante 8 are such a treasure to my childhood. Roadkill was a bit iffy but I fell in love with it either way, honestly it was like a mix of all the good things with a side of butt fuckery that made me just play it over and over again. Vigilante 8 2nd offence brings me back to playing Beastie Boys "Intergalactic" in the background and hovering around the map.

The first Vigilante 8 was fun as hell! I remember the weapons had special effects too if you put in secret button presses.

If I am not mistaken, Special weapon moves or hits from signature totaled. Been so long. And you are essentially right on whammys. Stringing hits from different weapons together. For example the Mortar hitting at the same time as bruiser cannon. Good times. There was some insane combos you could pull off to just melt dudes in that game.

You didn't mention the weapon combos in Vigilante 8 like the crater maker (D,D,U,mgun) with the sky hammer mortar. It made a big crater in the ground by deforming it

Awesome video. I played the main ones on here when they came out and had a lot of fun with them. I have a soft spot for critical depth and rogue trip. Not many people at the time even knew about them or knew they were made by singletrac. Critical Depth is really awesome when you get into it and it all clicks.

    Vigilante 8 was awesome!!
Wouldn't mind a remake, but also for those that don't know in that game to total a car when wrecked, you have to hit them with your special attack

Critical depth was awesome. Played the hell out of that when it came out. They started to make a second one back then but it got cancelled. Bummer.

I loved Rouge Trip as a kid. The soundtrack was also pretty good. Got me into the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

I recommend you try FULL AUTO 1 and 2. They're the best car combat games in the PS3/360 gen, in my opinion.

Gotta love the weapon combos in vigilante 8. Not sure it was understood that's a thing in v8, but it is. It's a combination of up and down three times followed by firing the machine gun. Depending on the weapon currently equipped, the weapon itself will do different things like firing a turret shot that'll send your enemy halfway across the map or turning homing missles into a personal nitro pack. It'll spend more ammo, but is totally worth it. Definitely spices up the combat and allows for some creative ways to go for the kill or even helps with eluding enemies or making tough jumps easier. Kinda surprised they never made more v8 games. I have fond memories of those two games and it's multiplayer on the 64.

Was hoping to see carmageddon on here. Played the crap out of the second one years ago. Not exactly like Twisted Metal, but the premise is that you can win the level one of two ways. Win the race, or destroy all other cars. When you destroy a car, after the race, you have the option of buying it after the race using your credits. Throughout the race, you use credits to repair your car. You also find multiple power ups and each car has different strengths and weaknesses (size, speed, handling, strength). Some special maps, the goal is to kill every living thing (people, dogs, elk, etc.
One of the funniest things back when playing the game, was some of the negative effects you can get from power ups...gravity from mars, gravity from the moon, drunk driving (all controls are opposite and the screen moves around), springy suspension, no suspension, etc.

You didn't cover it but I did enjoy *Dead in the Water* , when I was younger.
Basically Twisted Metal on water (nice water physics for psx) and has a race mode as well.
