This generation of the Defender strikes a perfect balance between the rugged, functional ethos of the original models and the luxurious, high-end vibe of the current Range Rover lineup. It's designed to handle rough terrains like a pro, keeping up with rivals like the Jeep Wrangler and Lexus GX, while also offering a smooth, civilized ride on regular roads.
This year, Land Rover has introduced the new range-topping Defender Octa model. The name "Octa" draws inspiration from the eight-sided shape of a diamond, symbolizing the model's toughness and luxury. Equipped with a twin-turbo V-8 engine and a versatile air spring suspension system, this Defender is all about combining off-road capability with on-road comfort.
The 2025 Land Rover Defender starts around $58,000 and can go up to $124,000, depending on the trim and options. We're excited about the new Octa trim, but it's priced close to the Range Rover territory and other luxury SUVs.
The standard Defender comes with a 296-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive and locking differentials are standard across the lineup. There's also a 395-hp 3.0-liter inline-six with an electric supercharger, turbocharger, and a 48-volt hybrid system. If you're craving more power, the available 518-hp supercharged V-8 is a beast, accelerating the Defender 90 from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. The new Octa flagship will likely feature a 626-hp twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8, borrowed from the Range Rover Sport SV.
The Defender's cabin strikes a perfect balance between luxury and utility, with design cues familiar to Land Rover enthusiasts. The center stack features the shift lever, ignition switch, and controls for the climate system and driving modes. Some models even offer a jump seat between the driver and passenger, reminiscent of full-size pickup trucks.
Cargo space is on par with competitors like the Wrangler. The rear seats can be folded for more storage.
The Defender comes with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system running Land Rover's new Pivi Pro interface, with an optional 11.4-inch display. The system is responsive, supports over-the-air updates, and features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Standard features include in-dash navigation, a six-speaker stereo, and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot. Higher-end models offer 10- and 14-speaker Meridian stereo systems, a digital gauge cluster, and a head-up display.
The Defender is packed with driver-assistance technology tailored for off-roading and towing. Key safety features include:
Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
    Available adaptive cruise control
The Defender comes with a standard warranty covering four years or 50,000 miles. The Lexus GX offers more value with a six-year powertrain warranty and a year of complimentary maintenance.
