  • In this video, Greg is finally back on our Woodland Mills HM130 Max Sawmill milling PREMIUM Doug Fir logs. We paid extra for these 32 foot long logs and it was worth it. These are beautiful logs that are creating beautiful timbers and lumber/bonus material for our barn house. Feels great to be back on the sawmill again!
Did you know we are building our barn house out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, (which is now our barn house build) make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab last summer, we milled most of the lumber needed over this past winter and are now starting to prepare to put in another slab for our garage and the rest of the house.
Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from ‪@BarnGeek‬ . We are excited to build one of his beautiful barns and turn it into our home.
    • Why Do We Think WE CAN...
***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
Here is a link to the video that shares the sawmill cover / sawmill shed build from start to finish:
    • Sawmill Cover Build - ...
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
    3 posts in the front
    4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
    Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
    It will have a 3 :12 pitch
    Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
We have shared the entire build!

Peeling the bark off the logs and washing them down is adding life to your saw blades. If you weren't doing it, you would be tempted to saw with dull blades and cause yourself a lot of problems.
On another channel, the gentleman was struggling to turn a large log on a HM130 Max sawmill and one of the commenters mentioned how well your setup is working. He said he is going to build a sawmill shed and add the same type of winch and arm as you have. Your reputation is spreading!!
You are getting really good at centering the pith and getting bonus material.
    Thanks for bringing us along

Hi, Mike- well, that’s pretty cool- thanks for sharing that!
At least with this set of logs- it has gotten so much easier compared to when we started milling.
Hardly using the cant hook, a lot less measuring tape and the pith is right when you plan for it to be. Pretty sweet! 😁

May be more time effective just to rinse about a dozen logs off w/ a pressure washer and put them on a log deck in front of the mill. Ive peeled plenty of logs but im opinion your better off just buying a sharpener and changing the blade more often. Just my 2 cents. Nice beams.

You are probably right. I’ve been trying different methods. I’ll be back on the mill in about a month and hopefully I’ll have the easiest method figured out. Until then… building has started! 😁

Howdy y’all- yep, those are beautiful logs and timbers. I’m a little bit jealous lol. I’m really happy with my Woodland Mill. Not a production mill but perfect for what I do. I mostly saw timbers like you are but can take the time to make sure they are perfectly square and that saves a lot of time when planing them. You can stack your bents up to a comfortable height for working them together. When you start lifting them they will want to slide off the stack so have plenty of help. Hope y’all have a great weekend. God bless

Hi, Paul- Thank you and thanks for the tip regarding them wanting to slide off the stack. I’m sure that first couple that we put up will be in slow motion 😁.

20:43 You poor folk, Logging in BC I had to rip a Doug Fir 64' in half and quarter the 87" butt log, ahh I fell a 19' diameter Cedar on Van Isle. Still great set up.keep that blade sharp.

Hi, Paul- I bet you saw some incredible trees. I have a love/hate relationship with anything around 30” - cool logs but sure are a lot harder to mill. Thanks for watching! 😁

Wow, THIS is a saw mill ! Nice shed for a rainy day, not a car port! Most tubers saw 8' or 10'. I think you could saw 24' if needed. (Oh my back) I am subscribed & ready to watch often. This looks like it could be a good building project to watch and great listening music. If you use a crane to set the truss-frame, I would build & stack the frames for max crane reach & minimal set ups. Hey, you should set up free "gym" memberships. LOL

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  Před 3 měsíci +2

Hi, John- Thank you for the nice comments.
I can handle a 23 footer but have sawn a 28’ footer with a little extra work. The crane that we are using has a 60’ arm - hoping to only move it twice.
I am sore most mornings after working out there - sore but not hurt. Some people get it at the gym- not for me. 🤣

Hi, Dewayne- I painted the ends of the logs when I first started milling but haven’t been recently. I do plan on sealing the ends as I build. Then we plan on staining after the roof is on. These will still be green as we build so we don’t want to seal them so the moisture will be able to escape. Hope that answers your question. 😁

Standing between the lumber and the logs is not smart. You won't last long if you keep doing it.
