    This was a good first log to mill from the pile of burned logs - pretty happy with it, overall! Definitely a lot easier to just get it up on the mill, than debark the whole thing! Hopefully, the rest are this easy. Hope you enjoy this video! 😁

    That’s such a pretty timber!

    I have also noticed a weird effect with your videos. When I watch just on my phone everything sounds great. When using my BT headphones everything is great. When using my BT speaker all I can hear is the music. When you are speaking the music gets quieter but I hear no words. I have listened to countless other videos on all three systems and your videos are the only ones I have that issue with. I have no advice on how to fix the issue but wanted to let you know my experience. Love your videos. Love your drive and the experience of watching your journey. Keep up the good work.

    Beams look good from the video. They will add character and tell a story. Definitely keep them.

    Looks like the burned logs are turning out beautifully. As someone else said, if you turn the log the opposite direction after the first cut, you will be cutting into the cut edge and out of the burned edge. Takes more time and if you turn 90° each time it takes more planning but only the first cut will have the black going into the log. Once you have the cant with only 1 surface with the black you will be golden.
    Thanks for the video. Looking forward to seeing the assembly starting.

      Hi, Mike- Makes sense- it will be a while before I’m back on the mill but I will give it a try. Those logs are not all created equal- this log was barely burned. Others were heavily scorched- we’ll see how they look.
      Thanks for watching! 😊

    Very nice logs even if they are burn logs nothing wrong with them at all.
    Have you ever thought about building you a drying shed ?

      Hi, James- Thanks for the comment- we agree that they are some nice Timbers. As far as a drying shed - not really. I need to get past this colossal barn house build before I think of anything else😁.

    Howdy y’all- that log still turned out some nice beams. Your planer will take care of any black stuff on the timbers. Does your planer have a guide you can put on the side? That makes it a lot easier when making full width passes. I’m using one on my planer and only having to make one pass on each side and the timbers are staying pretty square which is something you need to watch for. It’s a bit of an ordeal when working with timbers that aren’t real square. Where there are connections those areas can be trued up fairly easy with either a sharp hand plane or a smaller 3 1/4” planer set real light. Take care and God bless

      Hi, Paul- My planer didn’t come with a side guide- might see if I can buy one.
      Unsquare Timbers is my biggest worry and how to deal with them. Wish you were here to do some teaching! 😊

    If you are really worried about the black staining. You might think about reverse rolling. Once you have the log open cut into your open face. Just takes more time squaring it up.

    • @ourdreaminthewoods
      @ourdreaminthewoods  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Reverse rolling - haven’t heard of that. My guess is only turn it 90 degrees and then square it up to the bunk so you saw into the open side - makes sense. I’m not too worried about the black staining - might look cool in the end.
      Thanks for watching! 😁

    Thats the thing about fir, wind shake, pitch pockets, beautiful trees, however. Hope there is no cat hanging around for those robin's after the eggs hatch.

      @ourdreaminthewoods  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Hi, Richard- We have been pretty lucky up to this point on wind shake. We have plenty of spots to put these Timbers that won’t mind a little pitch showing. No house cats for us - both allergic. 😁

    you know I have timber frame home and beams all have major splits in them because there green and it take years to dry out and to me they look good and will be awhile until you build so they should be fine but what do I know I am just a old carpenter

      Hi, Wade- Being a novice at this whole thing - unknown makes me nervous. I don’t mind the looks of the cracks as long as the structure is sound. 😊

      @@ourdreaminthewoods ya i saved a video he talks about letting the log sit for a while then mill them let them sit for another 4 to 6 months so if they twist then mill another half inch on both sides before you build.
