German teaches American about Fries with Mayo

- As originally intended by Belgians who invented French fries, the fritessaus (or fries sauce) is the condiment used as its accompaniment. Now, more and more Americans are turning to mayo as well. Will you do your part?

As an American, ketchup and mayonnaise are often mixed to create "fry sauce". It's a way of sneakily tricking picky eaters into eating mayonnaise. Most American special sauces are just fancy mayonnaise anyway, as said by popular internet chef Josh Scherer.
We do this in Europe to but just because we like the taste of the mix
Its to trick people into eatong mayonnaise? I just did it cause it tastes good
@@-FutureTaken- The problem isn't that people don't like the taste, it's that people don't like the *idea* of mayonnaise. Picky eaters get so grossed out by the idea of eating an emulsion of eggs and oil that they will refuse to even taste it, despite its incredible flavor.
This would explain why I don’t like “fry sauce”.
Why would you want to trick people into eating mayonnaise? What's the point? It isn't like it's an extra healthy food option.

As a German, coincidently eating sandwiches with remoulade right now: I never got the American's obsession with ketchup. Fries with ketchup are alright I guess, but I'd either eat them with mayo or without any sauce, rather than ketchup.
What about curry ketchup?
@@hydra09minecrafteer Curry Ketchup is loads better than normal ketchup and I really like it - but it doesn't fit nearly as much to fries as mayo does. To me personally that is, taste is extremely individual.
Truth: Ketchup is America's fish sauce. American cooking suffered a lot from wartime. A lot of immigrant cultures were living off government subsidies, which were just basics like flour and sugar, so we lost a lot of food heritage. That's why a lot of mainland American cooking is very plain. Many Americans eat so little spice that a sprinkle of paprika is "too spicy".

As a kid growing up in Canada, I personally "discovered" dipping fries into mayonnaise. I have never had any exposure to European culture as a child, so it was truly fate that brought me to this combination. Aaaaand all the other kids at school called me a weirdo for doing that.
Same, except I'm German and my discovery was poutine!
Weirdo!
for not doing it earlier
When I was a kid, there was a local diner type place that served their cheeseburgers disassembled. You got everything you might want to put on a traditional cheeseburger (lettuce, tomato, onion, a dollop of mayo) but you had to assemble the burger yourself.
Dunking the fries in the mayo was what got me started on it, and being stationed in Germany later in life just reinforced it.
A kid I knew growing up did the same with spaghetti

Fries and mayo - the gateway drug to fries and remoulade! 😂
For those from the UK - the mysterious Remoulade they speak of is known here as tartar sauce. Found in fish and chip shops up and down the land! 😋
In Denmark at least remulade and tatar sauce are two different yet similar things. In my experience remulade is much sweeter. Wich one is closer to UK tartar sauce I can't say though
Isn’t tartar sauce kinda mustardy?
Correction: OK, so I must admit that I've never eaten Remoulade. I made the above statement because I looked up the product on Amazon uk and came across the Delicato Remoulade from the Taste of Germany shop which called the product Tartar sauce. It also looked the same - white with green specks in it. Going back and looking at the ingredients after reading these comments, I've found that the German Remoulade doesn't seem to include the gherkins which are commonly used in the UK such as in the popular Heinz and Colemans tartar sauces. Googling the difference I think that the Remoulade and Tartar sauce have the same French origin and both have the same base but Remoulades typically have more ingredients and there are more regional variations. So you can have gherkins in Remoulades but I think you would also have more herbs too. I would guess that the German Remoulade is similar to Tartar sauce but a little less tangy due to the lack of gherkin pieces, based on the one brand I looked at. But, like I said I've not tasted it.
The Danish Remoulade seems to be a different varient and has a very different aesthetic with its yellow tone and no specks or lumps from what I can see.
Anyway, that's enough researching. I hope that clears things up. If anyone had tasted both the UK Tartar sauce and the German Remoulade I'd love to hear what you think.
Nice to know 👍🏼
Thanks for taking your time to look it up
Cajun style (US) remoulade is mayo or brown mustard-based with capers (and a few other things). It includes hot sauce or horseradish for some sizzle.

One of the main reasons why Mayo is also popular in Germany other than the taste is that it's thick consistency creates less of a mess when eating.
When you buy takeaway pommes, or Currywurst-Pommes from a food stand they give it to you in a small rectangle bowl of paper and you eat it while standing (in a public swimming area, in a football Stadium, on festivals, or at any public event). Ketchups isn't a cream, it's a fluid. It's runny on the plate, it sticks less to the fries, it can soak through the paper after a while and it easily ends up on your hands and clothes. Mayo stays firm, it sticks easily on the fries and is pretty safe to eat standin. You can really drown your fries in that shit without worrying to end up looking like a caveman that can't eat.
My favorite is fries with peanut sauce. It's quite common in the Netherlands. We also have patat oorlog (war fries) with mayo peanut sauce and chopped onion.
Yeah. I‘m German and I do like mayo, but peanut sauce is also fantastic on fries. Some of the better fries dealers over here have it, probably more the closer I get to the border
