MUST WATCH: Stuck in a freight elevator for an hour!

- Warning (and this should go without saying):
Do not attempt anything you see in this video without the building owner's permission and proper training. Riding freight elevators is risky enough as it is, and opening the gate mid-shaft is incredibly dangerous. I was being very irresponsible (and not quite thinking straight) in this video, and in a few others prior; this incident served as a wake-up call, and as a result, I've largely stopped filming freight elevators since.
This is the elevator in a now-closed department store in the Chicago area, whose name, despite being mentioned in the video, will not be mentioned in the title or description to avoid further problems. Originally a 1970s Montgomery lift, this was modernized in the late 2010s by Schindler.
On my way down from 2, the elevator's safety brake engaged and stopped the elevator, leaving me stuck in the lift. After cutting the camera, I spoke to a Schindler dispatcher on the lift's emergency phone, who sent a technician out to free me from the lift. He arrived an hour later, opening the doors on the second floor, and pushed a ladder down into the lift for me to climb out. I was freed from the lift just fifteen minutes before the store closed for the day, at which point the Schindler tech let me use the original Montgomery freight to return to the first floor.
This obviously attracted the attention of the store's staff, to whom I apologized for riding the staff-only freight lift without permission, and for causing them so much trouble. Videos and Instagram posts from other lift filmers have shown this lift out of service over a month after I was here, leading me to believe that it was never fixed and didn't run again before the store's permanent closure three months later. To this day I feel sort of guilty, but in a way, also kind of honored, to have been (probably) the last person to ride this lift while the store was open.

Don’t feel guilty TKE, this never should have happened had they done proper maintenance. Based on the description, you handled this perfectly!!
Another reason I pay attention to every single little sound the lift makes to predict if/when I'll get stuck in it. In this case, the subtle banging noises leading up to the entrapment were the giveaway. I believe one of the cables could have snapped, but I'm not entirely sure. Either way, I'm glad you made it out safely & that you were able to leave before matters got worse. To add, back in September 2022 I had a similar experience at the Westfield train station in Westfield NJ with a KONE (generic) passenger lift. Except that time it was hydraulic. The motor did not kick in at full speed & was struggling & changing pitch before slowing down to a halt in between floors before the motor kicked back into high gear a few seconds later & jolted to a stop at the second floor landing & the doors opened. I would be absolutely petrified out of my mind if I heard those sounds in the shaft leading up to my entrapment.
Rest In Peace (RIP) 1971 - 2021
(This Freight Elevator)
What did the sign say on the left freight elevator? As you got stuck. I wouldn't ride random freight elevators because then things like that happen.
That was loud strage bang noise everyone got jumpscared when there are watching this video
And this is now your most popular video.
Dang, lucky you got the last ride though!
i actually could hear it creak a little bit before it safety braked
When you guys gonna learn to stop playing in the Elevators.
Nobody's forcing you to watch; you're welcome to leave if you don't like the video.
If this were me I would have literally climbed right out of this thing, probably not the best idea.
You couldn’t. The bi-parting shaft-way doors are locked
Luckily This elevator and the Original Montgomery freight was also previously filmed as well (see previous videos) especially with permission from the staff.
You Could of / should of checked in with staff and building owner as it would be best to ask there permission before riding that elevator because that way you don't get busted / in trouble or even cause the staff any trouble.
Don't stop filming freight and service elevators, you Still can / could But it is Just that you will have to check in with management and staff.
You Handled this perfectly though..... Riding freight lifts when this Store was about to close which it did. We Apologize for any inconvenience

That happened to me one time in Fargo, ND.
1:39 That WUClAT Sound from that scary horror show elevator scared the death out of me
And also that elevator screen was glitching out. Also looks scary
1:36 And this is why I don’t ride sketchy looking elevators…
It's not sketchy looking but more so why Schindler mods suck.
@@Jamestube8439Schindler's elevators don't suck
@@Seekieboi1398 Eh… they don’t hold up so well
@@Jamestube8439 its just that
Schindler elevators that get stuck:2/10 i hate when i get stuck in one of my fav elevator brands:( even otis elevators
Schindler elevators at ✨YONDER INN HOTEL✨:8/10 the other Schindler elevator was out of order and 1st one was fine but when i saw the "DO NOT USE 1R BUTTON" i was unhappy😭
1:38 RIP my ears... Glad you got out alright.
Thx!
If these elevators were alive, the original one would be probably laughing when this happened, since it would get all of the freight use for the rest of the store’s operation. “I AM SUPERIOR TO YOU SHITTY SCHINDLER!”
In all seriousness, this was crazy, and I’m glad you got out okay! Seriously, *DO NOT DO THE ACTIONS IN THIS VIDEO UNLESS YOU ARE TRAINED!!* Also, for the love of god, *CZcams videos do NOT train you on how to use a freight elevator!* Nobody in the future wants to see that an elevator enthusiast got seriously hurt by messing around in a freight elevator.
There Was a time when a passenger elevator got stuck at a JCPenney at Southcenter Mall which was happen in 2022 so yeah that incident is similar to this incident
That was a Montgomery G&P
FINALLY
How did that even get stuck? And when it got stuck, why did the indicator go wild? [Stuck in elevator] 1:35
Who got you out of the elevator did it start to move again
A Schindler technician
Well, epic motor fail, I guess? Nice to see the moment of stuck on its own......
How come you didn't open the rear door
I had a lot more to worry about at the time...
Where is this at?
Read the description.
And now it’ll never run again unless someone new decides to move in and fix it
And maybe modernize it again so that way it gets rid of Schindler's logic and everything they did to it.
why was it flashing 05
"OS" meaning "out of service"
A Fail
You should have gone off at 2nd floor
Yeah exactly that could of happened
Oops!
You will do this with permission from building owner next time

I have learned my lessons the hard way and do not need lectures from strangers.
@@tkefan29 I am commenting anonymously. It would be best to ask / would have been best if you did ask permission from management before riding freight elevator because that way you dont get in trouble or even cause the staff any trouble. Sorry

Glad you escaped from elevator and got out alright though
1:38 Jumpscare
EPIC FAIL!
This is why I NEVER, EVER ride elevators!
