- In this video we explain the story of Bioshock and take a look at it's characters. Bioshock is a science fiction / horror action game set deep beneath the surface of the Atlantic ocean in a underwater city called Rapture. Rapture is the creation of businessman Andrew Ryan, who gathered the finest minds in the world together in one place to build a utopia far from the world above. However Rapture has fallen and it's inhabitants have gone crazy. What's more a mysterious man named Jack crash lands directly over Rapture and is forced to head inside. But why? What is the story of Bioshock and it's characters? In this video - Bioshock explained we take a look at all major characters and plot points as we go through the events that went down at Rapture step by step.

The "would you kindly" revelation was absolutely mind blowing the first time I experienced it
when I first played the game, I had goose bumps when I got to that wall of pictures. It was the first game I ever played with that kind of plot twist. I will always remember that fist play though. Incredible game! In my top 5 ever for sure!
Filipe Fernandes yea totally mind blowing if your IQ‘s low
I watch rick and morty so i got it right away
I Don't get it
@@bigmack2654 considering I was 13 when the game released I think it's fair to say it it was pretty mind blowing for anyone. Low IQ or not. Don't be so salty
Filipe Fernandes yikes
That‘s a pretty big wooosh there flying over your head
Fun fact: the good ending is the cannon ending that's right, a horror like game where the good ending is cannon, enough to make an old man cry
The good ending is way too corny.
The sad ending is way too corny.
Life is way too corny
Everything is too corny
The universe is corny
I felt so betrayed when Atlas revealed himself to be Fontaine. I was doing this entire thing because Ryan killed his family...and his family wasn't even real
I mean , it was kind of SUS when the sub was allegedly filled to the brim with Human beings and when it exploded not a single Organ , not a single drop of blood was seen splashing out in some direction.
@@liker-qd4fzAlso the fact that when the submarine was destroyed he yelled “No not the submarine!” and not “No my family!”
I never trusted atlas to begin with he felt so off...
Dang
Oof, When i played this game first I didnt even register that Ryan blew rhe bathysphere up lol
one correction if i may: Andrew Ryan didn't gamble when he orders Jack to kill him, he knew that he would die anyway, so he gives the order because he wanted to die a death in his own terms ( choosing his own path not obeying someone command ). He did it believing that this would be a death in a way of his beliefs: about freedom of choice, the very idea of what Rapture is about. A man chooses: andrew chooses to die, a slave obey: Jack obey a command to kill him.
Wow mood af
It’s debatable that Andrew Ryan was killed in Bio1.

There's actually 3 endings. Good, bad, sad. The sad ending can be achieved if you harvest or save only one little sister. It's the same as the bad ending but Dr. Tannenbaums tone of voice is different.

My sister was playing bioshock, she was fighting the plastic surgeon, his health was low and we were out of bullets. We were health camping him, I suggested to hit him with a chair using the telepathy, I thought it was gonna hit and not do anything, but nope, one hit with the chair and the surgeon was face down in the water. We laughed for a following three minutes. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.
OMFG XDDDDD

WOOHOO YEEEE BABEH
LMAOOO
Or you hit him a couple times, run downstairs and hack the medical terminal. He'll run up, try to heal and then die.
You forgot to mention the fact that the real parents of Jack were Andrew Ryan and his mistress Jasmine Jolene.
Wait wait what?!?
@@C0ZMIK5K1TTL35 It’s been a while since I played the game but iirc Ryan impregnates his mistress and due to her financial crisis she sells the embryo to that scientist (can’t recall his name) and he modifies it. I believe Jack had a body of an 18 year old when he was 1 or something like that.
@@yasambhawanishankarrao4630 Suchong was the scientist! Based on Burial at Sea PT 2 Ryan knew of Jack's whereabouts and mind control functions being put into play by Tanumbam and Suchong. He referred to Jack as "the ace in the hole" planning on using him as a failsafe in case he lost the war, but Atlas, aka Fontaine, managed to get a desperate Elizabeth to kidnap Jack from Suchong's lab and deliver the ace to him instead. Now this somewhat contradicts an audio log in the first game where Ryan apparently had no idea of Jack's existence but seeing as Burial at Sea is Ken Levine's most recent written piece in the Bioshock universe, I would assume it takes precidence in the canon.
Great explanation but you missed one of the most saddening and crazy revelations of the whole game. Jack wasn't just some nobody, he was the b****** son of Ryan. You get clues starting in the fisheries when you listen to the diary that explains that you have to be genetically related to Ryan for the bathyspjeres to work, you come across the room where you were conceived in Fort Frolic and finally in the Control Center before you face Ryan you literally get the dots connected for you. What makes this twist important is the juxtaposition of Ryan's ideals of exceptionalism and runaway capitalism being undone by his own flesh and blood who was a mindless puppet and slave. To watch the scene where Ryan is trying to use the bonds of paternity to break your mind control by ordering you to beat him to death or break free and be a man was gut wrenching and the most difficult scene to watch. It also was pivotal in subverting expectations. When Atlas' "family" is blown up by Ryan you truly do want to kill him and bring revenge but by golf club scene and the realization of who he is to you, you almost feel pity as he is cowering in his office. Whereas the kinship you feel for Atlas is immediately dissolved into rage as he becomes Fontaine. The Ryan father connection is the cherry to story Sundae!
Never knew how players weren’t aware, you find Jasmine Jolenes body in Fort Frolic as well, who is also your mother. Audio tapes reveal her pregnancy of you.
Idk how this explanation doesn’t have more likes, it’s beautiful worded and perfectly explained
@@leedraconis5793 thank you!
I'd also like to add that Ryan disabled his Vita Chamber when he confronted Jack. On that topic, If I'm not mistaken, Vita Chambers were also using Ryan's DNA recognition, you hear about it in the labs when you become the Big Daddy. Pretty sure, but I could be wrong.
you spelt bastard wrong :P
The good ending makes me tear up constantly. It was so good to see that saving the children led to them gaining a life outside of rapture and Jack becoming a father to all of them. That last scene of them holding his hand while he was in the hospital, more than likely close to death from age, was beautiful.

The Good ending made cry in a good way when I first played it. After the little sisters went through so long being tortured, they can finally be free. The chains broke and they were loose, finally having a taste of freedom. The part that made me cry the most was when the person you were playing as was in the hospital. Having lived a full life, you raised the sisters to be regular people. But it could not last long because of age. As you are at your last moments the sisters held on to you, knowing that you will be gone soon but will still hang on no matter what..
Bioshock is really one of the best games
I genuinely, wholeheartedly agree, though infinite kinda threw me for a loop. >>;
Contendedlink 75 infinite was literally my favorite, maybe because I played it first idk. But I just loved everything about it. 1 is definitely my second favorite though, and 2 was not at all bad but was just my least favorite out of the bunch. Now that 4 has been announced we may have a contender

There is a book called
*Bioshock: Rapture* that explains a LOT as well. It's based on the events before the games events.
Also, Splicers are Plasmid/Adam adicts, not soldiers made by Ryan.
@Ksmite
both.. they were in fighting on both sides, poor and rich(fontaine using black market for cheaper adam created addicts in poor population, also in people who were loyal to him).. then Ryan using pheromones gained control over all of them.. so they became his soldiers.

I never played bioshock myself, but when i was younger (like, in kindergarden and 1st grade) i used to watch my dad play it all the time, so it still brings me alot of nostalgia. "Would they kindly" give us another bioshock? Like maybe to roam around in a apocalyptic ruined and abandoned city? Idk just wondered what it would be like to roam in a ruined city but bioshock style.
If you consider the "Rapture" novel canon (which I assumed you did since you used the book's cover art in the video), a few things in this video are wrong:
-Frank Fontaine wasn't even his real name. He stole the identity of a fisherman who was delivering things to Rapture during the early years and eventually weaseled his way into the city. He then had a man surgically altered to look like him take his place as Fontaine and altered his own appearance to look like the character Atlas so that he could spread word of unrest and demand worker's unions just so he could tear Rapture up from the roots.
-Ryan didn't create the Splicers nor did he control them. Fontaine's plasmids created the splicers unintentionally and their addiction to plasmids were one of the main causes of Rapture's downfall along with Fontaine smuggling bibles into the city and Ryan's "Free Market" not working well in practice.
-Ryan had little to nothing to do with the creation of the Little Sisters and the Big Daddies. They were a direct result of Fontaine needing a way to produce Adam. They found that the sea-slugs that created Adam bonded best to little girls and the little girls needed protectors.
-(You didn't mention this) Jack was actually Andrew Ryan's illegitimate son.
The downfall of Rapture was so much more complicated than people realize. It wasn't just ONE event. It was a collection of little things that all snowballed into big problems that eventually ate Rapture alive. Ryan's belief in unrestricted business, Fontaine's influence and intentional actions to uproot the city and rally her people, the addictive nature of plasmids, Sofia Lamb taking control of Persephone and creating a religious rebellion under the promise of prosperity, Ryan never letting anyone leave. Rapture was a pipe dream from the start. She could never work the way Andrew intended.

Rapture is rich in history and lore. The characters, even though not as deeply developed in the game (but perfectly described in the novel Rapture) add that touch of realness to this utopic, sci-fi retro story. I believe this is what they call "Steam-punk?"

The good ending is so amazing bioshock is one of the best games to be made
