Today I give you a little shallow dive into who exactly Liberty Media are, the company who purchased Formula 1 back in 2017. What do they do, what have they done for Formula 1, and ultimately, do I think they will lead the sport to success - or failure.
Let me know your opinions and thoughts below, like always I will make the time to respond to every single one of you - so make it good!

I will give them credit for opening up F1 to fans thro social media like CZcams and Twitter. Bernie had no clue about this aspect of F1.
Netflix deal has done loads to bring in American fans.
@@lsloan33 yes and also the race highlights, team radio, qualifying and race wrap-ups etc. Bernie was too protective of F1 and didn't even allow small clips of F1 online
They also had to give Netflix permission to do the series.
Liberty media has ruined the sport listening to fans that know shit about F1 and racing and now the regs are getting worse, with less downforce, small engines, small tyres and in general slower cars.
@@TommoOnCZcams But he didn't, bernie was an old man focused on tv rights at a time where there wasn't internet and social media, and yes maybe he didn't keep up with the time the last years, but saying he held the sport back destroy yours and this channels credibility cause it's just so wrong.
Drive to Survive is what actually got me into the sport! So Iâd say theyâve done a good job!
Tommo F1 well, Iâd always wanted to get into Motorsport/start to follow it more. Whenever something was on tv, like GTLM or f1, Iâd watch it for a bit. Then around April last year, someone I follow was tweeting about Drive to Survive and I decided to give it a watch. Now F1 is one of my favorite sports to follow! (right behind baseball lol)
Same here!
Yeah me too. It's Drive to Survive
That is on you. Just because the make it into a series with fake sound and dramatic music suddenly you are a fan? Lol.
@@NulJern why so salty ahaha
They're saving it from the damage Bernie was doing.

Liberty Media has done bits imo. Properly made the sport 21st Century
Disagreed!
@@NulJern any reason?
@@motornaut How many do you want?
@@NulJern Just list them, I'm intrigued
@@motornaut Ok, you will get one because of your greed. One reason i disagree is that f1 is broadcasted and raced in many many countries, before everyone had smartphones, internet and social media and liberty media wasn't the ones making that happen. Liberty media may be credited with creating awareness of the sport but they didn't bring the sport into the 21st century. Maybe you think making a tv series on netflix is the same as bringing f1 to the 21st century but that's wrong.
The renovated F1 CZcams channel is great
I heard they hired an OG CZcamsr to produce content for the F1 channel, especially the meme videos.
I was not known to F1 until i recently watched the netflix drive to survive. Since finishing that show, i have become almost obsessed with Formula 1. Whoever is responsible for capturing new audience to the sport is a genius
That was amazing. Im brazilian, living in Spain since im a kiddo. So, Ayrton is my Hero, been raised into It, my father is one of those dudes that didn't lose a race since 87. So, I wasnt into F1, until I saw Drive to Survive, It got me back to my childhood, and then, put me back into my new reality. Im 25, and I love F1 now. The only sport I follow. The Drive to Survive thing, is one of the best marketing moves I've seen in a while, because its gonna get such a lot of people like me into It again, and its awesome.
Definitely the CZcams channel and itâs social media presence, I am trying to get into MotoGP and their online just isnât on the level of f1
It's about racing cars and bikes, not fcuking likes and short videos on social media. Go watch formula e or nascar.
NulJern I never said anything about likes, What I mean is that the way f1 structures its channel it makes it easier to learn about the sport like I said âtrying to get into MotoGP!â Check your facts before you go spouting off nonsense Mate!!
@@youtubeislife5562 listen, first of all, i am not your mate. Second, if you go to motogp and don't like their content then you are not a fan of racing, don't blame their social media, it's pretty great actually. Same about f1, you don't like f1 without a netflix series or a youtube account then you are not a real fan of racing. Just facts.
NulJern Whatever Mate.
@@youtubeislife5562 that's what i mean. You are not a real fan of f1 and you clearly don't know or love anything about racing, just another wannabe liking whatever youtube recommends. They definitely made F1 more modern with Social Media activity, CZcams, F1 shows and fan voice.I really think they can solve the current problems with the new 2021 regulations, maybe not everything in 2021 but create even better racing like we have never seen before!đ€đ»đ
Yeah you are equally stupid. This has been tried before and there is no gurantee for success. Might aswell go race gokarts then. They are taking the essence of f1 because some retarded fans complain on social media. F1 is not about making cars slower and pleasing fans. It's about racing, nice engines and speed.
@@NulJern If it's about racing then unraceable cars aren't part of it. Which happens to be the cars we currently have!
@@Spido68_the_spectator You obviously don't know or love anything about f1 or racing.
@@NulJern Your reply happens to be wrong. You said that F1 us about racing, right ? Racing means changing positions, overtakes, mistakes, gambles, successfull things, drama and stuff. What's the point of having a race if none of that happens? Better only have qualifying then since it decides who will win. F1 was becomming more like endurance ! But WEC already exits!
You cannot hide the fact that F1 became boring, causing its decline. The begining of 2019 is exactly the peak of it. Most boring races ever!
Looks like you didn't even like 2010 and 2012, considered to be the greatest seasons!
It cannot be about speed anymore, we are not far from the limit, and it gets really expensive and tends to kill off racing. It's not like the 80s, 90s and 2000s where champs were fighting each other like crazy giving us some entertainment with cool looking cars.
If you want speed then put the cars on rails and see them wandering around like a model train set.
@@Spido68_the_spectator omg. Have you ever seen a WEC race? It's great racing and not like f1 at all. Never claimed all seasons are equally good, but saying 2019 was the most boring proves you know nothing about racing. You are right i liked the 04 05 06 07 08 seasons better, but i accepted they were trying something new to get better racing, which didn't work. And it's just wrong that 2010 and 2012 was considered the greatest seasons, where the hell have you been, and where do you get your info? Your arguments are destroying your own credibility. We should be pushing the limit, not backing off, that is not what racing or f1 is about, and f1 is supposed to be expensive, it's the high end technology and the teams race to build the most advanced racing cars that makes f1 different for indy car. Rather have a race with one amazing overtake than a race with 5 or more easy overtakes. If u want more batles and easy overtakes go watch nascar.
I think a key thing is the social media aspects and especially relaxing the rules on social media and showing behind the scens of races. F1 is not a directly relatable sport for new fans (compared to football wich anyone can play for example), so making the fans feel like they are truly part of a race weekend makes them more engaged and more wanting for a team.
Just scrolling through around 120 comments at this moment seeing that almost everyone got an answer from you is genuinely why i feel you're going to become one hell of a youtube channel
The success of a youtube channel is not about how many in the comments you reply. It's about what you are saying and if there is any truth to what you are saying. The big problem with youtubers and so called influencers is that they also influence people even if they are talking shit about something they don't know shit about. They might even get success without telling the truth but their cridibility will get tested the more popular they get and maybe someone who actually knows about f1 comes by and tell them that. Would love to see this fresh faced guy actually talk or interview somebody in f1, just for the pure entertainment.

Another great video, hope youâre going to rank the 2020 liveries (also reckon this channel could be the place for fans of drive to survive to discuss what happened in specific episodes, a bit of a stretch but along the lines of those shows that recap reality tv episodes)
Couldn't agree more Tommo. Their CZcams channel is simply brilliant, races are more exciting, fans are more connected with drivers and it's so easy to get caught up in the hype of F1.
Awesome video as always
I had NO idea Liberty Media operated in englewood, I live in Denver myself so thatâs a giant surprise to me
Same. Iâm in Boulder
Here in 2022, the sport is probably at the highest itâs ever been, new fans watching and getting invested in the sport, great content on the official f1 CZcams channel and s Netflix series getting more fans into the sport
I was like you fell out of love with F1 around 2011/2012 and the changes to the sport have brought me back into it
I have been a dedicated fan since 98 and now i have finally given up on them. Changing the regs in 2021 was the last straw. Formula one never has been about social media, netflix and pleasing the fans. It's about racing fast cars on big tyres on gnarly circuits at high speeds and they have lost alot of old fans because they wany to pleae their new fans, they are sell outs

Hey, Tommo! I've been a bit absent due to exams and all that kind of stuff, got home and got your notification, first proper vid i've seen about Liberty, i didn't have a proper idea what they were about as a business company and all that. As for the F1 part they've done a massive job by making F1 a much more open sport to the world and letting the drivers be themselves, no wonder i'm a Lando fanboy, it's thanks to them!
Wow. As someone who grew up in Boulder, Colorado (about 25-30 miles Northwest of Denver/Englewood) I didnât realize that they were so local
Always been interested in F1 but Drive to Survive really made me want to learn more about the drivers, tracks, teams, F2 (and below) as well as the general history, and get properly immersed in the sport
I think the youtube channel has been the biggest change for the better. It appeals to a younger audience, and (like you mentioned) gives a compelling and honest look at the drivers. Like you said, this helps with giving the drivers a face to put to their name rather than a helmet. It also globalizes the sport more than ever before. excited to see what f1 and liberty media has in store in the next bunch of years!

the fact that they really bust open the gates in terms of tactics (I remember a video about Red-Bull and Mercedes about some sort of undercut) and team radio's is just phenominal. Still they don't get enough creds for really saving the sport.
Also, proud of you for reaching the 15k mark mate! love it.
They don't get credit for saving the sport because they didn't. It might seem like that, but many old fans are leaving because of the new regulations in 2021.

If Liberty Media didnât take over I donât think Iâd be a strong F1 fan like I am now. I remember seeing their post race highlights and getting hooked
Tbh you don't know that. You have been fan for what 1-2 years because of a youtube channel and a netflix series? You are not a strong fan if you got hooked by the highlights, you are fan of the wrong reasons. You should be fan because of the drivers, the cars, and the racing not because they made a highlight compilation you thought was cool. A strong fan watch every test, practise, quali and race, no matter how many highlights or crashes there was. Highlights are for wannabe fans who doesn't love racing and who can't be botherdĂžed watching the actual race.
The only thing I have to say is, drive to survive is interesting and I will and have binged watched it. The only problem tho is that they make everything dramatic (which I know they have to) so it may be abit misleading to some newer fans but itâs still a great show
It was thanks to the f1 CZcams channel I got back into the sport
That's just a sad fact. You are not a f1 fan if you need it to be on social media to like it.

100% on point analysis. Liberty has done wonders in growing/revitalizing viewership. Especially starting with Netflix, and theyâve made drivers more accessible which gets fans more invested overall. It worked on me.
My favourite thing is how they have made the F1 Archive easily accessible
Yeah i think the social media stuff is the biggest factor in getting me really into F1 again. I stopped watching as a kid nd seen the netflix show and looked into it again. Its alot easier to follow, feel included with your teams etc.
Ngl I really enjoyed the 2017 US GP driver intros before the race - yeah it was a bit cringy at times and there were a few slips and errors, but on the whole it was really cool and I was sad not to see it at the 2018 US GP. I wouldn't adopt it for every grand prix but maybe either just the US GP or the 'majors' in the season (Australia, Monaco, GBR, Belgium, Italy, Japan, US, Abu Dhabi)
It doesn't feel like an 'old man's' sport anymore...I've been a fan since about 07, and even though there were some parts of the 2010's that were quite exciting, I don't think there was 'enough' excitement. Now, the fact they have the resources and capability to in some cases 'distract' the viewer away from less exciting moments, like some particular races, is fantastic.
I've always enjoyed watching f1 but it's only in the 2 recent years that I've been deep into the sport and I think liberty media has a lot to do with it

Great vid once again Tom. Yes, I think no doubt I think Liberty Media has done well for making a sport that has stagnated a lot in Bernie's later years and make it more interesting again and make us look forward to a lot of different things. @@TommoOnCZcams Well all i'm hoping for is when they signed up with another Channel, it makes sure that channel wants the sport to be free to air as that's the only way for F1 to gain many viewers again rather than just relying on DTS
Hey Tommo quick question.
How many Formula shirts do you have. And if so which teams?
I have the 2019 Haas rich energy gold shirt
Tommo F1 You should make a video talking about all the new team merch once the season starts
I was out when Schumacher was out of Ferrari. F1 came back to me because one day a video from the F1 Channel was recommended to me. I think it was around 2017. I then decided to follow it completely for 2018 (along with F2) and here we are. Now I follow all the teams and drivers on Facebook, Instagram, CZcams and Twitter as well as every decent F1 youtuber :)
As much as Bernie has done for the sport, he was slowly killing it the era of HD TV (remember how it took them AGES to do it), internet memes and social media (Lewis used to get tons of letters from Bernie telling him to stop posting on social media ffs).
Please do a video on INEOS, i don't even know who they are, i'd love hearing you explain the brand for me
Largest chemical company in the UK apparently and highly controversial too. If it involves chemicals, chemical processes or chemical products, they most probably have had a hand in it.
Before watching Drive to Survive, I was hardly aware that F1 even existed. Thats just the reality of how the sport was covered by major sports networks in the US. At the time I would have never even considered myself to be a fan of any type of motorsport. After watching the series, I was immediately hooked by the spectacle of it al and went on to watch every race of the 2019 calendar live as it happened. Nowadays I would say Iâm borderline addicted to consuming as much F1 content as I can get. I certainly owe it to Liberty Media for allowing me to find what has become my favorite hobby/interest.

I'm not a fan of Ted either although I LOVE how he gets interrupted by team radio EVERY race, went to Monza last year and Martin Brundle did a Q&A at our campsite and we mentioned it to him and Martin is definitely aware that he's always being interrupted

I think the best addition from liberty media is the tyre perfomance graph from AWS. It's amazing, right? hehehe
On a more serious note, I really think TV direction and information display on TV has really leaped forward a lot. However, I want to see more CArlos Sainz!
I truly believe that they understood how things work today. You need to update yourself or you are left behind This sentence makes complete sense, even more in F1, where the car that does not update really stays behind on the grid
Kudos. This vid aged well. F1 is now the equivalent of a late 1999 MTV video
As an American my worry is that Liberty will definitely turn F1 into an entertainment company and lose a lot of the sporting values it has. Kind of how Football (both American and "soccer"), basketball, wrestling, baseball , etc is run in the States. World Football (specifically Premier league) has lost IMO alot of values and traditions in the process.
And this can lead to biases etc (scripts) to be present in the sport
Oof was sleeping when you uploaded đ
Tommo sir off-video question here, what do you think of testing? Will u change your predictions for 2020 season based on testing?
đ đ€ im curious
I honestly knew nothing about liberty media until now
I do think they brought a lot of positive fan engagement, which is great! The only 'worry' I have is that they try to take their entertainment philosophy too far into the rules of the sport. It is supposed to be about racing and innovation and not always about adding a bunch of random stuff to shake things up. There is a risk of some (more) purity of the sport to get lost - if that makes sense. Luckily we have Ross Brawn guarding that.
I've become a big fan of F1 and obsessed, their CZcams channel sucked me in and got me into it and then the Netflix series gave me a much greater appreciation for the sport. I am here from the future, and the future looks good. Liberty may not be perfect, but what they have done for the sport (Drive to Survive anyone?) cannot be overstated. More people are watching now then ever. Much better fit for F1 than Bernie ever was, in my opinion.
Hey Tommo what do you think is future for Pierre Gasly in F1
Hey what are your tips for a new channel dood?
NGL, I was a big fan of F1 since the year 2000 (I was 9 years old back then) but I stopped watching for a while around year 2013/2014. And it was Liberty Media that brought me back to watching the sport back in early 2018 by opening the sport up so much to the social media (well that and a lot of free time after a heavy breakup :D). And I completely dig F1 again now.
@@TommoOnCZcams No need to be sorry, I have ten times better relationship now :)
As long as they don't take out SPA from the calendar. It's good
Well said sir! Could'nt agree more!
I'm nervous about the fact that the clockwise sticks out of the corner...LOL xd
Liberty media did a very good job with getting new fans to the sport. They are uploading their highlights pretty fast. They also upload video about races in the past (top 10 video's for example), that gets me intrested into the old races. But I really like that they listen to fans (making a video about Carlos Sainz passes in Brazil 2019), reacts to the fans in the comments and going with the flow when it comes to F1 memes.
Graag gedaanđââïž I really enjoy it!
They've done ok w/the social media stuff no doubt. Bernie was a bit behind the times on that one. But F1TV really isn't up to scratch. It needs tons of improvements and has actually gone down several times since it's been around. One time they actually gave out refunds (which was cool) cuz there was no service at all. For a gigantic and dynamic media company like Liberty, this is just decidedly low end. You'd think the online tv component would be a slam dunk for them, but it hasn't been. Maybe it'll improve this year, but I dunno...
The at-the-track stuff is better since they came in, thereâs more screens around the track so you actually know whatâs happening! Overall though, the Highlights are getting better. If thereâs a banger race, theyâll give us extended highlights. Thanks Liberty!
@@TommoOnCZcams It's a great video, you coverrd pretty much everything that is relevant! Nice work, keep it up!
Iâve got a video idea for ya. Could you maybe dig deeper into the husku chocholate brand, Iâve seen them a little here and there, both mclaren and alfa romeo are sponsored by them and they are also involved in indycar
As of today they've brought F1TV Pro to Canada so for that I'm thrilled with them!
thankyoupourlavideo still wating for me(ireland plus VPN doesnt work for it)
I absolutely agree with you. I had the same relationship with F1 for a couple of years, it felt boring and no character. But now I'm back in, and I love the fact that they have started F1 TV (even if it's flawed) so I can just pay for F1 and not buy TV-package with a lot of sports that I don't like for crazy amount of money like here in Sweden. I think overall LM are doing the right things and have more focus on us the viewers.
Also, their F1 TV Pro Online service is great because it lets you to watch the races on the onboard cĂĄmaras or watch it however you want not unlike FOM which are obsessed with the racers on the front. Too bad that in my country, the whole rights of the F1 are under a Telecom which doesn't let F1 TV Pro to be here. I hope that the contact expires soon and either we get back F1 on national TV or Liberty Media can push F1 TV Pro here
I think Liberty Media have been good for F1 in all aspects and i cant wait to see whats next. The one thing i would like to see is them attempting to draw more teams to the sport not that there's anything wrong with 10 teams but a couple more would be great.
In 2020 Will got assistence by Lawrence, in 2021 by David. Another step, to bring F1 (back) to a bigger audience.
2019 is favourite introduction
