How to Paint Metal Patio Chairs (Step-by-Step!!)

  • Do you need to paint your rusted metal patio chairs and get them looking like new? This video shows how to refurbish metal patio chairs in less than one day. It took us about 2 hours to get our chairs looking awesome. You'll need to scrape the metal with a wire brush and then use a random orbital sander. The sander helps smooth out the old paint. I used 60 grit then 120 grit. After the sanding, wash down the chair with water and a sponge. Let the chair dry and move onto the painting. I used Rust-Oleum oil rubbed bronze spray paint with primer.

    I am working on my rusted metal balcony. I cleaned with white vinegar (leave it overnight) the rust is 90% gone. I scraped today the remaining rust with wire brush and paints are peeling off. I clean up the mess, applied rustoleum rust removal (for stubborn rust) and will check tomorrow and hopefully all rust should be gone so I can apply rustoleum combined primer and enamel. But It is a good idea to use the orbital to get a smooth finish of the surface. I am glad that you showed this video. It helps a lot. I will sand this first to get the smooth finish and clean/dry the surface.

    Turn it upside down and paint the bottom first. That way you don’t have freshly painted surface pressing against your work surface. Also if you paint the bottom last if the paint runs you have ruined the visible top. Otherwise great video. Thanks!

    Thanks for the simple video with details on products. I just purchased 4 very nice "used" matched and cushioned outdoor chairs from a ReStore near me. The metal was originally painted a dark green. Watching your process was very helpful - I know exactly what to do. Again the details (grit# & exact type of spray paint) are especially helpful!

    Spray paint is great and is nice and easy to use. I just finished painting a metal mesh patio table and chairs with Rust-Oleum spray paint and it came out well. However, I think I got as much paint on the tarp as I did on the metal. Rust-Oleum makes regular brush on paint that comes in a can. Next time I will try this paint with a brush and/or roller for this type of job but might use it in combination with spray paint for difficult to reach areas with a brush. I should save a little money but more importantly save time.

  • @nathantw
    @nathantw Před 9 lety +1

    Thank you for the video. I followed your steps on a large round table, the legs and 3 out of 4 chairs. After using the wire brush I started sanding with the 60 grit sandpaper and the paint started to come off. Since that seemed to be better than painting over the old paint I continued until there was bare metal. I then went over with 120 afterwards. Each chair ended up taking about 2 hours each but there were areas in the crevices that weren't touched. I'm wondering if it would have been a lot faster (and easier) to just get paint remover and just scrape all the paint off? It would definitely have saved my hand from the power sander. I'm currently on the last chair so at this point I'm just going to spend the 2 hours to sand the paint off.
    I don't think the wire brush step was needed since the paint was taken off altogether anyway. Also, as I said before, paint remover would be a lot faster to strip the paint off instead of using a sander (and maybe cheaper since I had to purchase the sander and the 50 sheets of 60 grit sandpaper).
    What do you think?

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  Před 9 lety +1

      nathantw thanks for your feedback, I'm not a against paint remover but it's a messy job and likely would be more frustrating. Sorry it took so long to do the project, although I will say that might depend on your expectation of the outcome. If you want an absolute perfect looking paint job it will take time. One or two comments. You did a great job! Do you teach ? You are an excellent teacher. One suggestion: Next time show finished product. I was excited to see it after you were doing such a pro job. Plus I liked the color and wanted to see if overall. This video was also very valuable for me to learn that I could paint plastic. I have some other metal chairs in which the whole seat (attached in a kind of sloop to frame) are (I think) plastic. They may be part fabric? Anyway, sorry I can't send a photo....but I am wondering if I could paint that. I am also wondering if the paint comes off at all if you are sitting on painted plastic? Thanks for this extremely valuable chair painting video!
