i don't think they have the desire to be the biggest kpop group during their debut, they just wanted to debut and show their talents. they literally thought blood sweat and tears was their peak 😅 also, their digital footprint was so crazyyyy you will realize they really didn't have any idea that they will be this big today.

Many of the members of BTS are NOT considered “good looking” under Korean beauty standards. Hitman Bang picked them for their talent (other than Jin, who was picked as a visual but turned out to have an incredible voice). They received intense insults and criticism in Korea because of this.

Jin was crying after the debut rehearsal because his pants kept falling down while dancing and he thought it would damage their performance.
It was the first time he was dancing with a micpack cliped to his shorts and the shorts were incapable to hold the weight so they slipped.
I have no idea if that happened multiple times or if he had to pull them up constantly during rehersal.
I felt so bad for JK when they played the prank on him for his birthday. Poor guy!
BTS wasn’t just getting attacked at the time. Now that they are all away and can’t speak up, there is a concerted effort to destroy them and HYBE. It’s bad! Try watching Boracity Magazine’s latest video. Also Asian Education and Cultiure has a series of videos about what is going on, if you are interested.
There are bonus scenes AND deleted scenes. :) V being hidden was a strategy… it generated hype when he was announced. I agree about J-Hope. My knees ache every time I see him do that.
Favorite song will probably change in a few minutes but “Stay Gold” is definitely a fav and Jamais Vu.
With all that is going on, I just watched “10 times BTS was mistreated” by Asian Entertainment and Culture. Although I’ve seen it before, it was good to watch at this times Just thought I’d share in case anyone else wants to watch.
Yes Bonus Content only starts at chapter 3 and please watch the episode to the end. The creator put a lot of time and effort into making this series and no time (not even a second) was wasted. The order of release when these came out was Chapter, Deleted Scenes and then Bonus content so to watch them in that order is the closest to the way they were watched originally.
I Have many favorite BTS songs but the one I currently go out of my way to listen to is LONELY from RM's INDIGO album.

V is BTS's secret weapon, and the company also fears that other companies will take it. He's very talented, a lead dancer, a talented singer, and has the widest vocal range in K-Pop. Also he is the most famous in K-Pop

I cannot choose one song. I got like ten-fifteen favorites. 🤩
jimin's early persona in bts content is so strikingly different than how he is now. these days he's so... soft? is that the word? he embraces his cuteness and his androgyny. he's warm, kind of shy, and giggly. seeing his old, muscular, aggressively hypermasculine younger self--it's almost like two different people.
watching these old vlogs, plus some later interviews where they talk about it... you get clues as to why. apparently the company originally dictated "roles" for some (or possibly all) of them to play. JK was supposed to be their cute, boyish maknae, for example... which honestly isn't much different from his natural personality, but the company forbade him from working out too much because they thought it would ruin his image if he were too muscular. meanwhile, Jin was told that to enhance his "handsome" vibe, he needed to act cold and maintain a sort of "ice prince" persona. we all know now that this is so completely opposite to jin's true, goofy and dorky personality... but he wasn't allowed to show it back then. that sort of thing.
for jimin, you see him say a couple of times in vlogs that his job in the group is "charm," so in other words, he is supposed to be the outgoing and flirty one. remember that the stylists are the ones choosing his outfits, not him. they always had him in less clothes than the others... like, notice he's ALWAYS the guy in sleeveless shirts? also, the choreo in no more dream where he lifts up his shirt wasn't his choice either, and in their first festa (I think?) he talked about how he was really uncomfortable at first when the choreographer told him he had to do it. Though he did also say that he eventually grew to like the attention it got him, so. 🤷🏼♀️
I also just have to point out... jimin is 17 years old in most of this footage. obviously the entertainment industry is... well, you know. but he's still a minor at this point, by our standards AND korea's (he is 19 in korean age, and they are considered legal adults at 20). so the whole thing seems kind of exploitative to me.
so yeah. baby jimin being a ho is funny, but also kind of sad.
The ascribing roles was not some abnormal exploitive thing the company did, it’s something common in entertainment culture in many Asian countries actually. From big productions, to small CZcams channels. Idol culture is not exempt from that. As it is part of their own culture it was not something crazy that the company was forcing them to do through predatory contracts like other companies were doing with other aspiring idols (plastic surgery etc).
Those roles are not chosen at random either, I’m sure getting to know these shy teenage boys was a part of it, and in countless early videos you can still see Jimin being the cutesy soft soul that he is. On stage he adopts a rougher look sure, but so do all of them, bc they are in the most important moments to showcase their music/concept and at the time it was students rebelling. Jimin was also not exactly dressing like he does now before he joined BigHit. He was still a teenager exploring and discovering his own identity, ofc he’s gonna look really different now, so does RM who used to wear a lot of black clothes and now loves color specially blue. PLUS they lived in a minuscule apartment and shared their clothes a lot, it’s not like they had space to accommodate the closet of 7 different boys, Jimin even talked abt how suga refused to wear some of Jimin’s clothes, they were literally scrapping by with what they had. Now that have the ability to have their own clothes and styles and no one stops them.
When Jin talks abt the change he went through he said “the company told me not”, not “my contract forces me to act a certain way”, the company, wanting them to show an image coherent with their concept of rebellious students (bc that’s what THE MEMBERS wanted to sing/write abt, not something the company came up with and forced on them) they wanted every member to have a role (which is very normal in entertainment there) that fit that. It’s not like their contracts changed from when they debuted to when Jin talked abt that. And they aired that on the channel themselves instead of hiding it, it’s possible Jin just a conversation with them abt it bc it started to bother him and that was that.
There’s nuance to these things, specially culturally. BigHit barely had a trainee system in place when the members were joining, they could barely afford vocal lessons for the vocal line who had never sang before. They were literally putting all of their money and investment loans into these 7 boys while letting them have creative freedom over their product which had to sell enough to pay their dues. What happened between those boys and that company (from CEO down to the choreographer) was a miracle. If they had major issues with their company, they would have left.
@@secretyidentity2833hmm... I don't THINK I said there was anything inherently wrong with the company assigning roles to each member. If I did, that wasn't my intention. The only thing I said was kind of, well... eyebrow raising was the fact that a minor was being told to do sexy choreo that made him uncomfortable. If it was a 17 year old girl group member instead of Jimin, wouldn't we be (rightfully) outraged?
And no. the members weren't contractually forced to anything. but using once again the example of jimin, this was a guy who was threatened with expulsion from the group like, 8 times in the months leading up to debut. He had NO leverage to make any requests or demands of the company, and probably felt like he had to do literally anything they asked of him. A power imbalance like that will absolutely influence a person's decision making, let's be real.
The assigned roles thing though, I mostly just find interesting. I grew up in the US in the 90s, when boy bands were a big thing, and they all had that dynamic. There would be the cute, sweet one. The bad boy. The big brother. The heartthrob. And so on. It's fascinating that BTS secretly had a blueprint kind of like that, that we only know a tiny bit about because it's only been mentioned in passing a few times, and only by a few members. Did the others get assigned a role? I'm so curious.

They are not and have never been puppets for their company, in this very video you see Jimin being cutesy and soft all the time I have no idea what you are talking abt when you describe his personality during these days as “hypermasculine” and “aggressive”. He has never acted like that besides performing on stage, bc that’s part of his job, there were also performance were he was sad and emotional…same thing. His personality behind the scenes remained the same. The man literally plays a music box at the end of this video fgs. Jimin wasn’t threatened with expulsion from the group, they were all trainees who were competing with each other, they also ranked suga, RM and another trainee at the bottom rank all the time, would you say that they were being threatened too? Yes, it’s understandable the pressure and insecurity that Jimin felt, that is the nature of that environment, it’s not like the company can just pick random people based on their intuitions, they need to literally see the abilities of the trainee to make sure their money isn’t being wasted, and it’s not just one person who decided the members, ofc some had disagreements abt who would fit best in the group, but Jimin had ppl in BigHit’s team fighting for him, including suga and v themselves, but why do think they asked v how he felt abt Jimin joining their team? It’s not like the other member’s opinions and thoughts weren’t being taken into consideration as well which is not something common in the trainee system. And this sense of power imbalance and Jimin being scared of being let go AFTER debut (signed contract) is pure speculation on your part, and not even supported by the financial reality of the company who barely had money to debut, which they got as a last resort investment, they could not afford to just quick jimin out if he refused to lift his shirt after they spent so long and so much money training him.
As far as the shirtless dances go, I understand people seeing that as sexualization but being real, they were not being marketed as eye candy for girls like many girl groups with minors are for men until this day…………they had a manly, strength, hiphop image, not exactly the product typical korean girls see as eye candy, being shirtless isn’t necessarily something sexual specially not for men, during his contemporary dance he was also wearing short shorts and was shirtless with a vest for the performance, was that sexualizing a minor? Or is it possible that there are other purposes other than sexualization when showing abs on a stage? Just something to think abt, idk the right answer, but it is something that wasn’t a pattern with every song or with every choreography and it’s in the past now.
At the end of the day I think all the members sacrificed themselves for the sake of the team doing well bc they believed in each other and wanted the best for bts, rm and suga left underground rap and their crews, Jin left acting, jhope left Neuron, jk sacrificed his education to some degree, etc I think that’s what motivated Jimin to get through his discomfort, not fear from the company. And like you said, now as a full adult he says that over time he grew to like the attention/comments bc it helped him with his insecurity, I think it’s really unfair to speak over him abt his situation and victimize him of something when he as an adult doesn’t see it that way.

Maybe there's a language barrier here or something, but you're twisting my words in really weird ways. Despite your claims, I never said anything about Jimin's personality, only his PERSONA and how he presents himself in content. I also never said he had an aggressive personality, I called his younger image "aggressively hypermasculine," which is not the same thing at all. And I said it in the context of him being super muscular, as an antithesis to his current androgyny, which I had mentioned like, two sentences previously. 🤦🏼♀️
Earlier, you ranted for like three paragraphs that assigned personas/roles is a totally normal thing in kpop groups and shouldn't be judged. And then in your next post you turn around and say that it has negative connotations and I am apparently implying the members are puppets by bringing it up. So which is it?
For anyone who hasn't, I'd recommend watching the 2021 interview with Jimin, J-Hope and Jungkook from You Quiz on the Block. In Jimin's own words, he describes his time as a Big Hit trainee, and how he WAS in fact threatened with expulsion every month. Not sure why you're gaslighting that. OF COURSE Suga and RM weren't facing the same thing. The whole group was built around RM ffs, it's not even a comparable situation. Anyway, the other members' spots in the group were guaranteed by then, which is exactly why they were being consulted for their opinions on Jimin's inclusion.
And cmon, seriously? The choreo for no more dream was obviously finalized long before they preformed it at debut. The conversations about whether or not Jimin would do the dance took place while he was a trainee, there's no "pure speculation" about it. That's when he felt uncertain about his place in the group and would have agreed to anything. So you can tell yourself all you like that it was his choice and there was no coercion whatsoever, but that doesn't make it right. The relationship between rookie idols and their company is NOT an equal one, I don't know why you're acting like it is, or pretending like they had true agency in those first few years. No, that doesn't mean they're puppets, Big Hit is not evil, but what leverage do you think the members (especially the non-music producing ones) had?
Are we forgetting sister group Glam? Jimin had JUST seen Trinity leave the group abruptly, six months after Glam's debut... most likely forced out by the company because her continued inclusion was damaging the brand reputation. Whether she deserved it or not I have no idea without knowing the full details... but it doesn't matter, she was an example for Jimin (and the other members) that a debuted group at their own company CAN ABSOLUTELY lose contracted members and continue without them.
Whatever. Keep defending sketchy things just because they're normal or common in the industry, that's cool. go ahead and justify making a minor feel uncomfortable by exposing his body (whether it's sexual or not doesn't matter, sorry). Just because the members don't publicly denounce some of the things that they had to do or sacrifice for the progression of their careers... honestly that doesn't mean much because they never would, it's not in their nature to complain. It would be not only ungrateful, but also insane considering they have to maintain those working relationships. And they are definitely not stupid.

That are two different things: the cut *before* they locked the debutline and signed contracts and a kick *after* with a signed contract.
Some people were unsure if Jimin would learn what was necessary to debut. He came about a year (not quiet) after Taehyung to the group and was first trained to rap before Yoongi suggested he should sing.
The contract was not signed at their debut showcase.
That Jimin would debut was decided back in december 2012 maybe early 2013 at the latest. That he was in pre-debut content alone was a confirmation - one of the reasons why Taehyung was afraid if they really ment to debut him was that he was not in it.
You seem to forget that they debuted Jimin as a lead vocal and main dancer. Taehyung debuted "only" as a vocalist and Jin as a vocalist and visual.
And we know from Rookie King how often choreo changed before it was locked down.
Watch T&D were they talk how fast Jimin learned to change how he danced. It was remarked to him that he danced wrong and needed to change it and at an evaluation a month later he had. That is extremly fast.
The trouble was that no one knew when they would debut and when Jimin came in the rest was actually debut ready. The debut just took time because of (to me) unknown circumstances.
The members had agency - some more than others maybe - but they did. Agency does not mean that you can do whatever you want. That is a serious missunderstanding.
A lot of stuff was necessary - including showing Jimin's abs - because Big Hit debuted them while having a debt of ca. 75 million USD and no way to pay for that anytime in the future soon. They also lacked the necessary connections so any (not negative) promo was necessary promo - like hiding Taehyung in pre-debut content.
Jimin was mature enough to understand it and hard headed enough to do it anyway. We know that he said that everything he wanted he got: from school to BTS - that was his first audition - and other things. He is pretty much an unstoppable force
The likelyhood of them "surviving" their first 100 days was close to zero. Every day could have been their last - not enough money to go on, pay rent and afford food and whatever else needed to be paid.

You do realize that the rumor was that she was a sasaeng fan of Super Junior member Leeteuk, right? That would have likely caused trouble,
For all we know she disliked being unsuccessfull and was threatened by SM not to come near him or just disillusioned that even being an Idol would her not get him. She may also have crashed with the other members. The label could have simply let her go because she asked.
She left the industry and seems not to have tried to e.g. debut with another group or to work in the entertainment scene.
BH does not necessarily kick someone just because they feel like it.
Jimin likely knows why she left so assuming he was afraid of being kicked after being shown in pre-debut content is pure speculation.
Fandom loves to promote that Jimin had a training time of 6 months. Which - when you know he came in in spring of 2012 - only makes sense when you count it to the time it was confirmed he would debut with the group - because the actual debut is more than a year after Jimin first auditioned for BH.
If Jimin was as squirmy as you we would not know BTS because only all 7 could make it - not with all the stuff against all of them.
Yes, he was not quiet comfortable. The choreo for a bit also included all of them showing of their abs and later I believe they had to.
Even in this content we see him in behind the scenes content show his abs.
It's privilege if you never have to do anything you are "uncomfortable" with in your life to succeed in whatever you want. And it was a luxury that BTS didn't have. But if it was a hard no I doubt they would have forced him.

RM doesn’t have a song with Nas, but he has met him and talked abt being his fan. Nas was RM’s biggest artistic influence. But I think the music RM is doing now has a very different style. IDK, maybe, if it’s something RM would want than I’m all for it lmao
You realize that ARMY's can't answer that question. BTS have over 400 songs in their discography, and they are all NO SKIPS. BTS doesn't put out bad music. There is no way I can tell you what my favorite song is. There are too many favorites!! Could you please watch to the end of the video? There will always be scenes or gems or songs that you will be missing if you don't watch the end.

Remember they are all 1 to 2 years younger than they stated here. Thats before they sinced up age calculation with the west.

JK and V were teasing Suga by rapping his verses to him in this chapter so it also works for timeframe. It's a track that they originally released July 2013 (1 month after debut) free to s0undcl0ud after BangPD suggested creating a song to capture their emotions, etc. at that time so they wouldn't forget. I love V. He’s so special, and gifted, and BTS would not be BTS without him. But when I watch this episode, I remember about how solo stans spread the craziest theories about why he was hidden before debut. Things like, V as such a standout talent that Big Hit was worried about other companies stealing him, or that he was some sort of secret weapon. None of that makes any sense, though, and it's honestly kind of insulting to V's loyalty. Do they think the other companies were gonna kidnap him, or what? Because otherwise, the only way V was leaving was if he chose to, and he had already committed to Bangtan.
As a trainee, V wasn’t some crazy prodigy. He wasn't like some of those 'big 3' trainees who'd been taking vocal or dance lessons since childhood. He hadn't yet grown into his gorgeous looks. He had a lot of potential, but back then he was just a cute and quirky farm kid who grew up playing the saxophone, that somehow accidentally ended up auditioning for an idol group.
I don't know if you know, but most kpop groups have an official hierarchy of positions, which are decided upon by the managers and assigned to members at debut. The ranking goes main first, then lead, then everyone else. When BTS debuted, Jungkook was named as main vocal and Jimin was named as lead vocal.
Two members were named as main dancers: J-hope and Jimin. Jungkook was named as lead dancer. At the time of BTS’ debut, Big Hit chose not to name V as part of the dance line. They didn’t invest their resources sending him to America for special training like they did with Jungkook, they didn’t give him dance solos like they did with J-hope, or highlight him in the choreo like they did with Jimin’s acrobatics and ab-flashing.
Of course, V didn't rap. RM was named as main rapper, and Suga as lead rapper.
There is also an official position called visual, which is basically just the member who is considered to be the best looking. Jin was named as BTS' official visual at debut.
If, as the solo stans say, Big Hit thought V was so incredible that he was at risk of being poached, then why did the company TOTALLY fail to acknowledge that? On paper, V debuted with the lowest position of the entire group. He was the only member not given a single title.
Furthermore, he wasn’t the leader, the eldest hyung, or the maknae. He didn’t contribute to writing or producing songs back then. He didn’t speak English. He didn’t act (yet). He was basically the only member of the whole group that didn’t have a “thing” that was his specialty or that helped him stand out, other than maybe his lower singing register. Not that he was given a lot of singing parts to show it off back then, anyway...
So Big Hit invented something. They designated him as the mysterious secret member, to make people curious. They made him choose and start using a stage name, something intriguing that would stick out in people’s minds. All this to help boost his signal a little, so that fans would take the time to know him, and then get drawn in by his personality. Because V really is awesome. 😊
The only thing I kept thinking while reading you break that down abt their debut positions is how on suchwita he talked abt how he wasn’t really ambitious back then, that he dream basically stopped with being a trainee. RM and Suga knew they wanted to rap, jhope knew he wanted to dance and picked up rap from them since 2010-2011 when he joined, Jin had auditioned to become an actor but was convinced to become a vocalist and join (from what Jin talked abt back then I think he just wanted to make his parents proud), Jimin wanted to dance and looked up to taeyang, jk wanted to be a singer, V didn’t really plan on audition to begin with, it’s very possible that had a lot to do with it. I’m really glad he found his calling and got his official positions now and can contribute all his talent and hard work with the group.
Thank you for this excellent breakdown. I too get frustrated when people go on about how V was a hidden member so that other companies wouldn't 'Poach' him. It was a marketing strategy because Big Hit didn't have the connections or resources to get a lot of exposure - which is also why the members were given free reign to an extent on social media. Something unheard of in Kpop industry.
