- Our time is finally here. We just bought a used sailboat and are about to cut the cord and start our long-awaited adventure. All we need is a sailboat. Like everything else in life, when you start digging beneath the surface, that is where you find good stuff. It took us 5 years of dreaming, planning, saving and 2 trips to Europe to find our dream boat. If you are even remotely considering buying a used sailboat in the Mediterranean or Europe, this video is something you may want to pay attention to. Questions you might have running through your mind about buying a sailboat could be - Is it safe? Blue-water or production cruiser? Ex-charter or privately owned? What is the process like? What kind of boat do I need? What do I look for in a used boat?
In this video, we share our first ever boat buying experience in the Mediterranean in 2020. Our hearts were set on a specific make and model. A well-engineered modern production cruiser produced by Elan Yachts. This is the kind of stuff you find when you dig beneath the surface.

@@SeaBeeSailing Yep, after my divorce I was a live-aboard in San Diego Bay for about 5 years ('04-'09) mostly living on and fixing up old glass cruisers (and one wood Chris-Craft, but we won't talk about that tragedy, lol), and worked as the dock manager and maintenance guy for the marina. Mostly a dock bum, but I got to sail almost daily :)

Thanks George. We had the chance to sail a number of modern cruisers before we made our decision on the Elan. They are well very sea worthy and surprisingly fast considering the displacement.

Congratulations for your new acquisition. I read that Elan are probably the best production boats made with hi quality in every aspect of their built. According to "Saiilng finding Avalon" on a impression 385, as they travel almost all around the globe without any big issues, Elan came on my list for acquisition in a few years.

I’m still in SF trying to work out how/where/when to buy my boat. Realized that even though I’ve sailed a lot in my life I have no “Sailing Credentials” and therefore would have a difficult time getting insurance so I decided to do the ASA courses while continuing to look. Back on the Bay after 22 years of not sailing. Feels great.

Thank you Andy for your comment and I'm sorry for my delayed response. Good for you to get your sailing credentials. Our insurance company in Croatia did ask for ours. What sailing school in the Bay Area are you taking your classes from? We have been very busy doing some long passages up north in Croatia. We are turning around now to make our way back down south. We know we need to push out more videos but have not had the time to do the editing yet - hopefully in the next couple of weeks. Overall, we are loving our Elan sailboat and will be sure to share out what we love the most and the few things we would like to improve. Nice to see your first video cover a wide choice of Impressions. At 14:04 and again later. Possible Groundings, this often push up the cabinetry and leave till tell cracks in the gallery area. There’s a number of sailing channels doing grid repairs covering these points.

Good luck with everything.. I purchased my powerboat 47ft near Venice and drove it to where I live in Cyprus. Croatia is an extremely beautiful place and of course protected within the islands to start your sailing adventures, it also has great Marina’s. When you reach the bottom of Croatia, turn left after Corfu and head over here through the Corinth Canal.. it’s an amazing and safe journey!

I obviously come from a motorcycle background and expected to find boat people more honest with their representation of what they’re selling, specially if the prospective buy is travelling a long way yet I found it’s the opposite, it’s like they think you’ll buy it because you don’t want to have wasted your time maybe. I travelled around 5,000 miles locally looking for a boat, one in particular was listed as the best and last of that model with nothing to spend, it had cracks and knocks etc and every time I went to check something that didn’t look 100% the seller tried to usher me elsewhere, add that I asked him to leave it at his yacht club so we could take it for a shake down but when I got to his house it was there all packed up on the trailer, boom and sails etc all in the cabin making it impossible to inspect the inside properly and no, I didn’t buy it (I was actually looking for a 31’ Farrier trimaran but his sounded so good in the add: the others I inspected all had issues from shoddy workmanship to delamination etc. Apparently it sold and a year later it was for sale again listed with new standing and running rigging as well as electrical and cosmetic repairs totalling $30,000 (not bad for what was supposed to be an as new little F24 trimaran that sold for $57,000 which was $10k more than any of the dozen or so of that size for sale at the time) and the new owner was asking $50k, his ignorance about the age of standing rigging and insurance is the main issue that caught him out plus that it was too small and light for coastal sailing his local waters which is something the seller should have questioned but no, he found his patsy. Looks like you did good and I love that rear berth, so hard to find in any brand... I’m now looking to sell my house and most everything else and retire on the water so once again I’m searching for a suitable boat, more inclined to buy a cat but there’s some nice monohulls around and after the trimaran I miss the more classic way to sail, either way it’ll be a performance boat as it’s mostly just myself: new would be nice but at my age (67) the waiting time unfortunately has to be considered. Stay safe.
Thank you for your input. I am not familiar with the trimaran you were referring to but it appears multihulls are the preferred way of cruising in the med for liveaboards if you have the means bcz of the additional space. We were not interested in multihulls for 2 reasons. High price and sailing characteristics. Sounds like you are doing the right thing by being patient and seeing the vessels in person you are interested in buying.

Hi Guys, congrats on purchasing a boat based in the Med. My wife n I live in NZ but bought a boat in Slovenia in 2018 and spend 2 to 3 months each year in the Med. We spent 2 years doing Croatia which was great. Our boats now based in Preveza Greece and have really enjoyed the Western Greece. Another tip is be sure to visit Montenegro! Thank you Rob n Amy, our current plan is to spend a year (live-a-board) in Croatia. For which we are looking into getting temp residency. Montenegro is only a day sail from where Sea Bee is currently berthed so I have a feeling we end up there quite often. We also plan to spend time in Greece and Turkey following year. Some of our favs in Croatia was Mjlet and islands opposite Brac. Old Hava town also very cute. We can really recommend Cleopatra Marina in Preveza. Reasonably priced and very nice people. We enjoyed Croatia but much prefer Greece. Anchoring is also free in Greece. Enjoy you new life.

we actually took Sea Bee to Mjlet back in Sep and rented electric bikes to visit the national park. We cannot wait to explore more of Adriatic and Aegean.

I definitely like the Elan build quality over the Beneteau. The Impression line and the Oceanis lines are primarily Med charter built both in layout and build/budget. Something to think about if your buying. Having said that Elan definitely has a superior build process and engineering over B boats.
The Elan Performance, S, E and GT lines are more owner focused and do see more focus on engineering added structural features etc.
Same for the Beneteau First line of boats.
Just something to keep in mind when shopping med boats. Boats built to charter spec are ok but you might find things about them that aren’t ideal for major trips, but many people do big crossings on these with no issues. If your shopping for major cruising outside the Med definitely lean in the direction of owner boats vs charter and definitely look at the First, performance, S, E and GT product lines don’t be dissuaded by the “performance” marketing given these hulls are built with more structural and sailing focus than the charter hulls that spend more time at anchor vs sailing. Just some things to know going into the sailing boat thing. My experience is competitive sailing ocean and SF Bay where conditions definitely test boat quality and engineering. I like Beneteau first series but given the choice a Elan S or E series definitely have better sea features and engineering/ build quality that I like.
Elan is made in my country. Good quality boat,great finish. Croatia is great sailing grounds,i sail here my whole life. If u happen to sail north,drop by Pula.

at this point, so long as you have property (boat ownership counts) in Croatia and you have a negative PCR test, you can enter the country. Things may change though

@@SeaBeeSailing We have a 1983 Polaris 43. A B Perry design. She is a cutter rig. I call her as a cross between a Lafitte 44 and a Valiant 40. I am also a member of Club Nautique and until Covid sailed the club boats as well. I was in Croatia last summer for work. And it is indeed an amazing sailing wonderland. A perfect spot to start your adventures!
I looked Polaris 43 up - nice looking cutter. We have been members of OSCS last decade or so and sailed number of Club Nautique boats west and east of Golden Gate. If you ever find yourselves in the med again ring us up. Bay Area sailors never disappoint!

It took me 3 trips to Europe to find the right boat. If you are in market for a production modern cruiser, Croatia offers good inventory and better pricing compare to most other Euro countries. Let us know if we can be any help with your research

Congrats on choosing the right boat. In my mind the layout is perfect. I wouldn’t want to have 4 double cabins for a full time cruiser boat. Me and my partner live on a 34ft sailing boat and have been for the last 3 years, that extra space you have does look appealing although the extra cost involved in maintaining that extra if too much for us.
What upgrades do you have in mind? Will you be more marina biased or living more in the hook?
In priority order, life raft, solar panels, spinnaker. Later on we may upgrade the ground tackle. We have a slip in Slano for a year
With my shopping I did look at the Elan's they are nice for sure. Went with a Hunter 450 CC, happy so far!! Will be a viewer of your channel great Video.

We are looking foe Hunter 45 DS, which is unfortunately rare in the med.
It will be interesting to hear why did you choose this boat, and some details about you're boat.

We likely won't be hitting blue water for quite a few years, but an opportunity came about so we bought last year.
Our boat needs some work (interior wood finishings, and sole are showing a lot of wear) we've got some refinishing.
Upgrades over the years coming too.
Mainly bought it for the centre cockpit (I like the safe feeling of it, and my wife the aft master is her plus).

@@subes5873 As we are In Israel (which is not a super power yacht country, (lol)) the amount of sailboat for sale is poor, we looked at first at the field of the Jeanneau/Beneteau family, but we encountered a Hunter DS 45 and we loved the layout and the concept that is very different from all the others.
Buying one in the US is out of question, and in the med you don't find much, but we are keep looking for one.we hope for good.
Was really looking forward to hearing the prices of the all the boats... but you never mention it .... i think it be great to know what to expect to pay for these charter it would be help full

The hours were not fake but they advertised the boat with less hours than it actually had. The ad said something like thousand and the actual hours on the clock showed more than 3000.

Definitely local - especially if the vessel is non US registered and you plan to de-flag and re-flag the yacht.

We are planning on covering this topic on our upcoming boat tour video. I believe the impression model is designed and built with cruiser in mind. It is a true cruiser not a performance cruiser. The hull shape, structure, tankage, storage and living space are main reasons we went this direction

Four years old private boat is incomparable to the six years (seasons) old charter boat for instance. Too many times you mentioned word 'disappointed' but you shouldn't have been because at the end everything is about money. It is okay if you paid for that boat less then 180 k$ as far prices prior to corona of one average charter wear and tear Elan 45I, year 2015, was cca 130 k$. That woould be good that your boat has bunk cabin which is easy could be used as a storage. Anyway, nice boat, enjoy sailing.

Congratulations on your new adventure!!! I am 18-24 months away from making the same leap. Our plan is very similar to yours, buy in Europe, stay there for a year or two, then make our way to the Caribbean. Just out of curiosity, was the reason you were looking at ex-charters was the price? I have been disappointed in every charter I've looked at. I feel the cost of repairs of poorly maintained or wore out equipment seems to out weigh the relatively small bump in price of a privately owned vessel. And being US flagged is a real bonus. Thank you for reaching out. We are hoping to publish a second video to cover the purchase process. This was actually my 3rd trip to Europe looking for boats so I have seen a number of private and ex-charter boats. Each have their advantages and disadvantages. Early on, like you, we only considered privately owned boats. However after seeing some poor examples (not all privately owned boats are in good condition), we decided not to discount ex-charter. Generally speaking private boats are definitely in better condition but the inventory is limited compare to ex-charter. Price and available inventory were the main reasons

@@SeaBeeSailing Bu arada Akdeniz'de tekne fiyatlarının - belli teknelerde - ABD'nin yarısı olduğunu söylemeniz de çok ilginç. Çünkü Türkiye'de herkes ABD'de tekne ederlerinin Avrupa'dan çok daha düşük olduğunu söylüyor. Sanırım ABD'de ucuz olan tekneler hep 20 yıllık tekneler. ABD üretimi unuttuğu için daha yeni tekneler Avrupa'da daha ucuz...
Ozellikle bizim yasadigimiz yerde, yani Amerikanin bati yakasinda, tekne fiyatlari inanilmaz pahali. Ozellikle nispeten yeni modern yapim bir tekneye burada kolaylikla 1.5 2 misli fiyatlarla satiliyor.

Hi.... I'm so glad you've reached your goal... She is so beautiful ... Hope you enjoy every second of your sail by her. As you experience Charter sailboats are mostly has problems. Cosmetic ones may disregard but others are big problem. I am the one who want to buy a sailboat in a short time , let's say in a year. After 33 years of hard work I will get retired and I am planning to start living on my sailboat ( keep the finger cross ).. In Turkey sailboats are over price so thats drive me to Croatia to buy a charter sailboat. But as you may guess it is not so easy. Have to buy a good condition sailboat from a reliable charter company or a broker. God it will be difficult....... Any way enjoy your new boat...... My first boat hunting trip was actually to Turkey but could not find what I was looking for. This video captures my second trip to Europe. Croatia for sure have bigger inventory and better prices compare to Turkey. My advice would be start your research early and be patience. I plan to spend the month of October in Croatia to have a look for a boat too! Can you maybe please share what websites have you been searching? How you found that boats?
yachtworld and yachtall- I am sure you are familiar with both. Croatia does not offer any local listings but if you are looking into Turkey, sahibinden.com is a good local site. Some listings are in Croatia.

Thanks for sharing - You have confirmed my thoughts and I will not be tempted to look for ex charter. At the beginning of the vid I was thinking, I want an owners cabin and it was great that you found this in the end. I have sailed in Croatia and found it a very expensive country compared to Greece or Turkey. I recommend that you take the longest chain you can carry as this may save you on marina and mooring fees. The geology of Croatia is such that shallow anchoring is not always possible. I have also switched my desire from the romanticism of fine lines and central cockpit to the practicality of a european production boat. I recently viewed an Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 44 DS which was fantastic but out of our preferred budget. My preferred length is around 42 to 46 feet. What other brands and models did you find in your research which you would recommend. We have moved to southern Portugal recently just settling in before continuing our search for a boat. Rupert, your comment is very much along similar thoughts I have been considering. I am in the early stages of the boat buying process and hope to find the right boat in the next 2 years. I plan to sail Croatia in spring 2022 and search for that right boat in that area. I would be interested in hearing your personal experiences also.
Hi Rupert, we really like the deck salon concept and, like you, looked into Jeanneau SO DS models. 42ds and 45ds. We did not consider 44ds simply because of her being new and the price tag she came with . I have seen number of 42 45ds in Turkey during my first boat hunting trip. Between the 2 I would go with the 45ds. However, I believe Jeanneau stopped producing these models sometime around 2013/14 which means, even if you get a younger model the standing rigging would become questionable soon. We did come across Sea Bee on Yacht World. I can recommend a broker in Croatia - Bach Yachting www.bachyachting.com I worked with multiple people there and although I didn’t buy my boat from them they were all really good to deal with.
