  • In this episode, Elif Shafak is focusing on the word #DUENDE: How often do you feel sad?

Welcome to our CZcams channel, solely dedicated to words.
Say Your Word is a digital platform by the acclaimed novelist, storyteller and women’s rights activist Elif Shafak.
A platform for words and anyone who cares about them.
Language is the key to understanding and unlocking our world.
It is also the key to the human heart.
Words are often said to have power.
What is not said that often is that they can hurt and even spread hatred and hostility, just like they can heal and bring about love, empathy and wisdom.
They can divide, distance and "dehumanise", just like they can connect and “rehumanise" those who have been dehumanised.
East and West, North and South, regardless of race, sex, gender, colour, religion, ethnicity, nationality or any other category, we are all made of stories.
Stories bring us together, untold stories keep us apart.
    Today's word is DUENDE.

In Spain we use "duende" with a positive meaning nowadays. When we say that someone has "duende", this person is charming in a way that cannot be explained with words.

We in the Balkans, specifically Bosnia (where I am from) have our Duende in our national song, Sevdalinka coming from the word Sevdah, which comes from the Arabic Sawda and I’m sure you are familiar with this word Elif. Sevdah is our Fado, and is full of Duende.

Not so sure about this definition though. Lorca was a very melancholic person, so he may have retained only the darkest aspect of the word (or the word has changed in meaning overtime...). But the point is that if someone dances, full of joy and passion, it is also duende. Basically, duende is art, passion, intuition... Anything beyond reasoning.

There are a lot of duende in Persian poem and Persian literature, and duende is the foundation on which we made our life in Iran, and you didn't mention it unfortunately, I really hope you didn't miss this regard on purpose...love

Again. Do you still think the fig is the forbidden fruit? Oh the Apple huh.
Why because people think you ruaaaahssian woOOOOoooOooOoomAn!!!!!!!!
Maby it is the Apple. But I'm so curious about why mushrooms only grow around rot.
Figs are nice and maby it is the fruit. I don't know but what qualifications does a fruit have? A fig is a flower technically.
    Fruit?
