Thanks for acknowledging youre not a native. I see a lot of transplants claiming theyre natives after living in nyc for a year
@@ye23. what would you do about it if she did? Would you be upset weirdo? 🤣
@@EatinGoodOsrs nope its just nice when ppl know their place and respect the locals
@@ye23. when would she be considered a local?
@@wonderland1911 when she moves there. You live somewhere, you're a member of that community. You can just say you are new.
She’s telling the REAL real. A lot of the people on YT who are glamorizing the city are either lying through their teeth, they’re newbies and haven’t had reality hit them in the face, or they come from wealth and don’t have to deal with the nitty gritty of the city.
Not everyone from the city comes from wealth... in my experience (from growing up in Harlem), most of my friends' parents had no other option, but to succeed- it'd be a process that most New Yorkers don't choose
If my parents had the privilege of having struggles mentioned in this video, they wouldn't even be in NYC to begin with
Now this is what I call a hit video! Its got it all - talking to your viewer in the shower, tons and tons of insights, lots of golden nuggets of your personal experiences one can't find, like, literally ANYWHERE ELSE. And the cuisine advice towards the end was mouth-watering! Oh, boy! Awesome, awesome work, Chelsea!
31k such a hit lol creep
❤
I am a leasing agent and everything you mentioned about the preparing the paperwork is spot ON! People who apply this way are the best, it makes my job so much easier 😅
Hi tina I’m 17, live with my mom (18 in july) and really wanna move to new york but. I have no job or money saved up any tips?
@@Cryptic-_-Plays000 If your parent is paying your rent, the first thing is to gather documents to show their financial standing. They will check affordability first, meaning they'll want to confirm your guarantor/co-signer has enough income to pay each month. If you're very well off, you can offer to pay for the entire lease upfront.
If your parent is not supporting your move, make sure you save up as MUCH as possible. If you're planning to pay from your savings, you'll need enough to cover rent+expenses (like food, utilities, transport etc) for at least 1 year (or however long your lease is). Regardless, having any amount savings is highly recommended.
Start looking at options ahead of your move and ask if you can pre-apply for future opportunities. Making connections with agents/brokers is a great way to get a foot in the door.
Last, if you're having trouble getting approved for a place (due to your age, lack of rental history, income etc), check FB market place, Craigslist or some other listing site to check for sublets and roommates. Regular folks are usually more flexible than agents/brokers when it comes to approvals.
I hope this helps! BEST OF LUCK on your journey 💖
I don't live in NYC, and I just wanted to say that all of your advice here is applicable anywhere. I think it's a video every younger person should see, regardless of where they live. I imagine it's all doubly important in NYC.
You’re acting skills are still alive and well…love the improv vibe of this video. Such wonderful and hard won practical information and advice for anyone moving to NYC…this is full of so much information. You’re a breath of fresh air Chelsea ❤
You’re the best Sue, thank you ❤️
Girl I appreciate you and your content soooooo much! It’s my dream to move to NYC and I consider myself an optimistic realist, so you being so honest and candid helps me feel more informed and and determined to make the move! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!❤
My tip: checkout also apartments in Jersey City and Hoboken, price for value is really good and it's a really clean and calm neighborhood.
Depending where you need to commute it might be a really good choice.
Yes love this advice!
Plan on moving in 2025! This is super helpful! Thank you so much!
This is easily one of the best NYC-related videos I’ve ever watched. I’m planning to move later this year and you gave such great, realistic advice. I love your channel! 🤍
wow thank you so much 🥹 good luck with your move!
How are you looking for apartment? I’m going to move out end of this year but don’t wanna pay brokerage fees 😢
You may be nervous, but this is by far , the best "moving to NYC" Video I've ever watched!
I find the whole insurace thing pretty interesting. I'd love a video of you going a little deeper into that. Especially for someone coming from a country with free healthcare and considering moving to NYC.
Be honest, is free healthcare good? Or not? I have heard just because it’s free, doesn’t mean it’s good.
From what I hear paid isn't all it's cracked up to be. Free just means you have to wait longer for some things like specialist appointments but you do get them in due time dependent on severity. Think the longest I've waited is 6 weeks for non emergent issues.
I honestly think the free healthcare received is great (in England) especially since the government is cutting funding all the time. The fact its functioning at all still is pretty amazing
Free healthcare IS great when you have a political party who don't just want to privatise everything so they can make more money for their rich mates from college.
@@sonibelrae821 I thought they deduct a form of NHS insurance fee from UK residents pay for healthcare?
Its not free healthcare. I want to know where doctors work for free. One of the highest paid professionals . Medical treatment for "free" is paid by high taxes. Our tax deductions are shocking.
It is preferred to the American system. But its not free.
I second it. In the country where I live, residents can call the embulance any time and it'll be just at your doorstep in a couple of minutes. No need to pay for this as it's part of the free public healthcare. However, I like the idea of having a hybrid healthcare system which would reduce the strain on public hospitals and the health system.
I really appreciate you bringing up the need to get involved in the community. I love that you care about people.
the health insurance portion was actually SUPER helpful. thanks for putting this video together!!!
i sincerely love this video. you doing random daily tasks was so nice. i felt very engaged in what you were saying and just rlly tuned in to the video because of you being productive while chatting
Thank thank you so much for these videos, moving this summer and just anxious, excited, scared, so many emotions. This just offloads some of that pre-moving stress I’ve been having as a recent grad moving to a city I’ve never been to
Your editing is superb. Really keeps me engaged. Your speaking is clear and concise as well. You're one of those channels that are good enough to be incredibly popular, it's just a matter of time.
I’m moving from Portland to NYC this summer. Your videos have helped me so much! I totally agree with the savings. Everything is so expensive compared to Portland.
I had CZcams on in the background while I was doing some work and this video came on. While I've been living in NYC for over 3 years now and don't feel like this advice was meant for me, I've got to say that the info you provide is fantastic! This could really help a lot of people out! Well done!
Hi Chelsea, I just moved to San Francisco alone and watching your videos are so comforting :) thank you for posting!
Really love the disclaimer at the end about being respectful!
I’m so happy I found your channel. So organically real and funny. Thanks for having the courage to be yourself in this space ❤
hey thank you Shara :)
Holy SHIT , you covered EVERYTHING, how TF do u only have 13k views , you should have 1M at least. Great content.
holy crap. I wish someone made a video like this for when I moved to SF from Canada. This is incredible!
This was So helpful! Ive researched a ton and visited a few times, but there were still several things that you shared that I didnt know. Hoping I will be able to utilize all of it in a year! Thank you! 🙌
You popped up on my recommended yesterday…..AND I AM OBSESSED with your content! Thank You so much for making these videos! 💕
❤️❤️❤️
Thank you sooo much for this video (and for all of your videos)!! It helped my and my husband so much. Last weekend we secured our dream Brooklyn apartment within 24 hours of touring it!! We're moving from Texas in 2 weeks!
This was the best, most comprehensive video about moving to NYC. Thank you so much 😊
I’m so glad it could help!
Hi! I work in health insurance in USA (and always vote for candidates who work towards universal healthcare 😅) so I wanted to throw in some info. Satisfying your deductible doesn’t make all eligible services free for the rest of the year. Satisfying your deductible triggers the insurance (Cigna, in this case) to begin paying a portion of your services (usually a set percentage like 80%) while you pay the remainder (“coinsurance”, 20% in this hypothetical). You’ll continue to pay coinsurance for all eligible services until your Maximum Out of Pocket (MOOP, usually a cumulative amount in addition to your deductible - say an additional $1200) is met at which point all eligible services for the remainder of the year will pay at 100% (unless copays aren’t included in your MOOP). Health insurance is incredibly confusing here, even I get confused by my EOBs sometimes. So I wanted to give a quick summary of how it works for those wondering.
Cheers to an incredible video. Love this style so much. Especially the shower bit. Loved that you kept peeking out from behind the curtain 😂
I love you for this!! Thanks so much for sharing, it’s really gonna help people ❤️
I changed jobs recently. I had great insurance before.
Now I'm dealing with the above.
Got a small raise but that barely covers my premium.
Hello HSA.
Love and learn.
Live and learn. And love too.😀
No to Universal Insurance.
Omg Im so glad I found your channel! I love your transparency, point of view, and narrative skills. It’s absolutely fun to watch your vlogs🤗🥳
Thanks Vanessa!! :)
I am obsessed with your videos! No plans of ever moving to NYC but you energy and speech is so addictively pleasant and inviting to listen to as you show your love for your surroundings is absolutely binge worthy! Thank you for being on you tube!
thank you so much!
I cannot stress how incredibly helpful all of this information was. Loved how informative and real you were. Thanks so much!
These a super good recommendations, I don’t live in NYC but have tons of family there so I’m very familiar with the City, this video was right on!
Chelsea, I am so glad I came across your channel and your videos. Thank you so much for your honest, down to earth chronicle of what its really like for non-natives to live in NY. I got accepted into acting school, so I will be moving to NY (probably Brooklyn) from NC this summer. Please keep up the good work and you definitely earned a subscriber.
Damn congrats!! That’s amazing :)
Congrats! That's exciting ❤
i’m not planning on moving to nyc but this is FANTASTIC advice for anyone looking to move anywhere
Ask any immigrant, foreigner or whoever, that's did "NY" 10yrs+.....*the grind, taxes, fees & b.s will make you a NewYorker* whether you realize it or not.
I am about to move from upstate to NYC. This is the best video I have seen. Thanks.
😂 Chelsea, you are a legend!! 🙌 I have no plans to move to NYC but that was awesome!
👏😁
Hahaha you’re amazing for watching ❤️
Amazing video, and a lot of useful tips for moving to any new city! 👌🏼🥰
I think this is my first comment after years, I moved literally 3 days ago, from Europe. Thanksfully I've a good job, but all the things todo/to know are overwheling. Your videos are really chill but very usefull. Thanks for putting the effort! And if someone else is like me, just arrived and looking to make new friends give me a shout =)
Watching from the Philippines! Looking forward to be there sooooon! Thank you for sharing your experiences and stories!
❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for this! I fly out in 3 weeks to go hunting on my own and it’s also my first time renting on my own and I’m really scared but your videos have saved me so much. I actually managed to save up 10k so I’m hoping the process goes smoother. Thank you again. I’ve been a silent watcher for a long time but I appreciate you
have the best time!! so glad this could help a little. nice to meet you :)
Your videos make me feel so calm and seen. Idk, they really are just so relatable. Even though I’m a 20 year old, gay college student living in Philly, I still relate to the small apartment and city aspect of your videos. I’m not a vlog person at all, but I love yours. I love your personality, and you find a way to make them so entertaining! 😊
💘
Subscribed! This is your second video that I watch and they were both fantastic.
Keep rocking and getting us all excited to move to NYC

At the end of the day: money. Just have money. Lots and lots and lots and lots of money. Or don't come here. I hate to be the bearer of that sentiment, but as someone who grew up and has lived here the majority of his life, it's God's honest truth.
This was extremely informative!
my gosh you didnt hold back! thank you so much! YOU ARE AWESOME
😊
❤️
Hi Chelsea . I Ran into your channel today and I have seen 4 Videos so far and it has a very genuine feel that is needed in todays content . I am a native New Yorker and I always find it interesting on others perspective when it comes to living here and there experiences with the true nature of living in this city . Also, You have given some good advice also when it comes to moving here . Keep up the good work .
she’s amazing isn’t she? Chelsea it would be cool if you did this full time or maybe started a business where you guide first time new yorkers over a 1-2 month period (or less, your preference)
just being a pal and friend to them in the city and doing meet ups with each new group of people.
if you did $350 for 4 weeks x 30 people per group that’s $10,500 a month.
just being a guide, being someone they can text the first month for advice. could do weekly meet ups for 4 weeks and be available for questions super simple.
and google numbers are free so you could use that to stay in touch without having your privacy violated
or even start small with 5 people and grow from there
Ok now my Sunday is complete!
I’m currently an high school student graduating in may. Once I graduate I will be attending an 2yr college . After college I plan to move to NY .. find a job and apartment.. this video along with others have helped so much from the fact that i will be moving from Mississippi to New York
I went and still sometimes go through this. I'm in my 40s and my people I found in my 30s are now married with children and just are mentally in a different life stage. I'm just starting to have those deeper friendships in my 40s. I deeply empathize {{{hugs}}}
Thank you! This is so thorough.
Hi chelsea!! Im obssesed with your channel, i was craving this content.. we share a similar lifestyle, i relate yo you so much!! the only difference is i live in argentina 🇦🇷but it is my dream to live in nyc so your vlogs really do light up my day. 💕💕💕
Great vid!
I’m not moving to NYC but just visiting soon. This was actually really helpful just for visiting I feel like too!
Move to NY and just make it work. If you want it bad enough you’ll figure it out.
Literally THE most relatable person on CZcams 👏
🥹💘
Just found your channel and am strongly considering a move to NYC so this was amaaazing - didn't realize you came from Portland, where I live now! Small world ✨
Hi! Welcome :) so cool you’re in Portland!!
Love your content
I'm not even trying to move New York (or the US) but I think this is a brilliant VIDEO. Finding a place to live is challenging in most places... ❣️
i felt like we were on facetime. loved it.
I'm glad I find your channel
this is so very helpful thank you
Thanks, Chelsea! Your content is so binge-able lol. I'll be moving there in August so videos like this are super helpful. It's like I know where to begin... but I also don't - at all.
I know it can be so overwhelming!
So HAPPY to have found you darling young CZcamsr, new friend! Subscribed because this seasoned lady is hellbent on moving to NYC. Discovered "HereBeBarr" and "Cash Jordon" and "Charles Monroe", your CZcams contemporaries...Jon from his Here Be Barr, is your Foodie Guru. Okay, so Born a Native New Yorker, in 1958, and moved away as a baby, I never got to live in NYC. I've lived in different countries, many different states, currently Hawai'i, but long to conquer the Big Apple. My father was raised in the city, and it's on my bucket list. No one thinks they will ever get burnt out on Hawaii, but many have and do. So it takes a village, and I'm adding you and your experience and perspective to my Village that it's gonna take to get me there. I'm a Sagittarius who loves to be spontaneous, but in my semi-decrpitude (that's a joke), I prefer advanced planning. I will be 65 in December, and I refuse to believe I'm too old to live in New York City. I have far too many things to do there. And I'm an East Coaster (shhh, don't tell... a Bostonian), so in some ways, I got this. But you are boots on the ground, so now it's time to cast you to the big screen and binge watch your videos with a glass of wine. I'm good at many things, but being retired is not one of them! Mahalo and Aloha...
I highly recommend Air Tags for ANY travel. Just returned from New Zealand after a month there. Bags were tracked to and from, and it’s peace of mind! And Air Tags don’t cost much!
absolutely amazing
Shes so real, real asf.
This is so helpful !!!!
Wow amazing!! Thank you!!
love your videos!!!
❤️❤️❤️
When I first moved to New York, a friend told me that I should try to get out of the city every now and then. I think this is still a great idea. Even for just a weekend.
Welp I am moving to NYC this fall and just loved this video - I have liked and subscribed... I hope I bump into you on the streets.
Hi!! I hope so too!
I'm a 40 something in the UK. I have had problems in the past getting my deposit back from a place I rented. I had taken pictures before I moved in and got my full deposit back eventually. Great tips x
you saved me woman ! thnx love.
Girl I’m moving in October and this is so helpful
good luck with your moveee!
Wow, this is so good.
Chelsea you make the best videos i stg
🥰🥰🥰
You most definitely need to write a "Survival Guidebook" for NY!
10k is a good amount to
Have to move without the worry of living and food. Im planning to move to FL and 10k is a greaaaaat amount to have!!
idk HOW I ran into your channel, but I LOVE IT. Also, LUGGAGE DONUT lolllllll
Every NYC video I’ve seen, I’ve noticed that Staten Island is left out and I’ve been researching it and it’s the cheapest borough and the safest but I understand it’s more for families and not single people but I still believe it’s a really budget friendly area of the city, you don’t have to give up your car, and you’re still close to Manhattan and Brooklyn and even Jersey.
Hey Chelsea a tip from a lifelong NYer as well as my entire family being lifelong NYers lol always drop off rent checks or any payments made out in checks that are just as important in the mail slot at your local post office and never in the mailbox on a corner lol 😉
Love this! This is my vibe. I want to move to NYC for the experience and not like Las Vegas casino experience….
🥰💘Very helpful!
