Is it WORTH IT to live alone in New York City? A guide for average people.

- Finances are always a part of the conversation when it comes to taking the leap to living alone, especially in New York City. Unfortunately, it's not something that is possible for everyone, but if it's something that you really want, hopefully this guide can help give you an idea on how you can make it happen. I am not an accountant, so please don't sue me if this info isn't exactly on point lol. Subletting is also an option for living alone in NYC, but I take you down the traditional leased route in this video.

People can use a calculator or chatgbt if they want to figure out their budget. It's your human, lived experience that's the draw of your videos! The value of seeing a real person making it happen in NYC is ineffable.
No matter how you budget, somehow you usually end up breaking even at best even if you make a good salary.

I'm a lifelong New Yorker, and though I went straight from living with my parents to living with my partner, I agree with everything you said about NYC life. One tip I would give about moving here alone is to join some group activities to meet new people so you feel less alone - whether it's salsa dancing, rock climbing, improv, etc. :) It's hard to make lasting relationships just drinking at bars.

I'm 28 and living in queens alone. I would say Chelsea is 100% right. It's great living alone but being financially stressed is another thing.
The minimum requirement of 40-times the rent is really keeping alot of hard working people from being able to afford a decent apartment in a good area. And that doesn't even include the fact that the rent increases every year make it even harder. I encourage people to get away from Manhattan and look in the southern Brooklyn area. You definitely get better apartments for the money. Your commute for the subway might be a bit longer but to me its worth it. I live alone, I'm too old to do the roommate thing. Basically its about being thrifty and changing your mindset.

I moved to NYC in my early 20s, and now I’m in my 40s. I started with roommates and then lived alone. In my late 20s I put aside a percentage of my paycheck into a separate account that I ignored. Eventually that money grew to invest into a stock market portfolio. And when the real estate market was right I used that money for a down payment to buy my own place. Sold my first place and made over $100k, to then upgrade to a larger space. So my advice is to save and keep your eye on the market.
Where did you got lots of money to buy something? What you’re doing for living?
In short it costs a lot of money to be alive. You have to work a lot to just survive and then if you’re lucky enough to have a really good job that pays a lot then you can truly live life the way its meant to be. You have to admit that its really sad that even if you do have a full time job, the odds of being able to live without roommates is really low and thats not just in NYC, but in any major city in the US. This stuff should really be taught in high school and college. No one really knows this stuff when they should be learning it and when it would be most beneficial to learn it.
so true, capitalism formation of the economy has made living and getting by so difficult! Let alone having dreams and wanting more than just “getting by”

I lived alone for a few years in the Seattle area before I got married. I love my husband dearly, but I sometimes miss having my own space. Getting to do what you want when you want, keeping your space to your own style, I think everyone should experience it once in their life. It builds character!

Living alone anywhere for even a short time is a critical part of personal self-growth and is worth the extra cost.
Living alone (and having the means to) is such a privilege, regardless of whatever city/town you're in. I've lived alone since the age of 17 (early 1990s) with the exception of when I had roommates, lived with boyfriends, or when I was married. Living alone helps to build character - like you said, to know that you can provide for yourself - is something to be cherished. It helps you to learn about yourself through financial stress, loneliness, anxiety... Women really have only lived alone (with social acceptance) for not even 100 yrs, but if it's something your heart yearns for - do your research, prepare, and go for it! Thank you so much for sharing your experience and helping other young people navigate their way around their choices and decision making! I wish I had your CZcams video to watch when I was first moving out on my own .... but we didn't have CZcams in the 1990s!🤣

LOVE the discussion regarding safety. People often forget it is a personal metric and that many of the "dangerous neighborhoods" aren't actually inherently super dangerous- how you carry yourself and how you take precautions can make a big difference. Ive lived alone most of my adult life and i wish i had more friends that dont have kiddos so we can explore and hang together. I definitely love living alone. It gives an element of peace. When i was younger i didnt mind roommates but essentially nothing compares to peace of mind and having your own space

I live near London, UK. Av salary here in the UK is 27k per year which is around £1,800 per month (after tax). Flats in and around London are extremely expensive (ranging from £1000 to 2-3000 per month) plus cost of water, gas etc . Young people here rent rooms because no one can afford a place on their own

I lived alone for two years in Berlin/Germany and everything you mention seems to be the same in those big cities. I was never afraid (I avoided the night life), but I felt lonely sometimes. Not to share my daily impressions at work and in the city made me sad some days. But the I took my bike, cruised around, had a coffee and watched people on the streets. I collected business cards of shops and restaurants, started scrappbooks and made my own city map (this was before iPads and Google maps😂)…one day I felt like I owned Berlin. This city was always good to me. After two years I moved back to my small hometown because of my job. But I remember those two years with pride, I wenn out of my comfort zone and I made it.

I watched your videos before I moved to nyc for the first time and it really helped. I lived in a shared space with roommates and it was really nice to have my own room and space but roommates really stressed me out not having a safe space to cook, clean, unwind is really important to me. Living alone in nyc is the best thing I’ve done as well. Although, it can be tough, not being able to split the expenses, the independent feeling is priceless! Great video as usual.

Never being able to get ahead with money hit me deep and I was someone who lived with roommates. I wish I could have experienced living alone in NYC but now that I've moved, it's even more impossible when I look at current rent prices. I've gotta live vicariously through you!
Finding this as someone who lives in Dallas alone and I think some of this advice is SO RELEVANT and helpful even if NYC isn’t where you’re looking to live solo.
The quiet/stillness/peace I experience living alone is precious to me but also know that for some folks that quiet/solitude is a huge turn off. It’s good to do those thought exercises of like, ok, I’m settled, it’s 8pm, I’m alone, how do I feel? Congrats on being able to provide this for yourself. I know I am so proud (and lucky and privileged) to be able to do this for myself and don’t take if for granted for a second!!

I’ve lived in NY (Brooklyn) most of my life but never alone. My family owns property and we all have our own space so sometimes it can be like living alone but when I want to be around people, I just go upstairs.
It’s always so interesting seeing other people’s experiences in the same place and how interesting it is that every experience can be so different. I had no idea that rent was so expensive though. I definitely don’t think I could live in my own city alone and still have a life and that’s pretty crazy.
You expense breakdown (minus the rent for me) is pretty accurate I’d say. Love your videos!

Thank you for this video! I am exactly in this situation, where i’ve lived with 10 different roommates in 4 years in NYC and am ready to live alone! My budget is tiny and i already live uptown (its great) so crossing my fingers to stay around here, but this video confirms that even though i will have to make lifestyle changes, its gonna be a worth it experience.
I live in DT Los Angeles, in a studio alone. It was worth it to get my own space but I relate to the being in the hole all the time.

Even though I don't live in NYC and don't plan on moving, I enjoy your content. I follow several CZcamsrs who give realistic advice on the places they live such as Chris from Hello From Hawaii and Maddie from MaddieGold in Mexico. I'm glad to see realistic content becoming more frequent because I find that far more interesting and engaging than just a bunch of sugar coated imagery.
Thanks for the awesome video, Chelsea! Although I don't live in NYC, I live in a big city and agree with a lot of the things you've said. I'm currently living with a roommate, but I sometimes do want to live alone. I know I could do so if I invested more money, but at the same time, I feel like I would get lonely without company. We may not be best friends, but we still go out for brunch or activities sometimes. Some of my roommates in the past have become my best friends too. However, I know this will not last forever. I feel like it's okay to live with roommates and live alone at some point in your life. Both experiences are different and have pros and cons, but either way will definitely help you. We live in a small house with 0.4 acre garden and I think the only thing about our lifestyle we have in common is that I too have a corporate job at a US based company. Wow I moved out of my home at 19 and have lived alone since 2018, and this video (that I just happened upon by algorithm, happy it brought me here and subscribed ❤) reminded me to be grateful that a) I’m able and glad to live alone and b) born and raised in this crazy metro area where people fight to stay in. I by no means THRIVE financially but god what a reminder to be mindful of all the great, not so small things in life to appreciate. Thank you for this very real, honest, realistic view of living in the city. I get so sick (…and maybe report sometimes out of pettiness…) of those unrealistic “How I live in NYC with a $5-8k budget and high paying corporate job in addition to maintaining a healthy lifestyle!!!!” videos and this was so refreshing to watch.

If you don't mind a longer commute by subway I highly recommend to anyone moving here to look further away from the city. I moved here in July and I sacrificed having a 40min commute for a quiet, safe neighborhood, a very spacious apartment with free street parking at a reasonable rent price.
100% agree with you. I have ALWAYS wanted to live in NYC, even for just like a year or so, but haven’t gotten the chance yet. I lived alone in San Jose CA for almost 5 years, and although the initial stress of finances got to me, I wouldn’t change that time in my life for anything.
I will ALWAYS encourage people to live on their own and get that experience. Mind you, I was in a relationship and we were supposed to move in with each other. I had went from my parents(moved out at 24) to rooming with my cousin, and then he and I talked about living together once she decided to move out. Though he made a lot more than me and would have paid all of the bills allowing me to save, I knew I needed to get the experience of doing things on my own. And in that time I grew SO much, I traveled, I made a lot of friends, and I learned to be ALONE with myself and enjoy my own company. I found myself doing things I used to think other people we weird or “lonely” for doing. Like taking myself out to dinner, going to the movies, going on a trip.
If your questioning it, just take the leap. Establish a safety net(friends or family) you know will take you in if something happens and go. Like, I knew I could go back home or with my brother if anything happened.

I live alone in orange county California and have seriously considered moving to Manhattan. The energy of that city is so incredible. I was just there in april and gets better every time i come back!!!
I’m a 37 year old and moved to a new to me city to live by myself that’s definitely not nyc. I don’t live in the best neighborhood but it’s the best one I’ve lived in I think. It’s nice to be on my own and structure my time and day as I see fit. It’s also really satisfying to be able to support myself financially, emotionally, whatever. I don’t think my life as it is would have been possible if I didn’t work so hard on my education and I gotta give a high five to my past self for taking that opportunity as far as I could go with it.
Never had the desire to live in NYC but still watching lol. Thankful I still live in a big city with all the perks but not as expensive. I own my condo and pretty much never budget. It’s so freeing

This was very insightful AND well edited and shot! I am looking to move to New York soon and I really appreciate the messages here. I feel like a lot of the videos I watch are too tailored towards the creator's own experiences and beliefs about moving to NY. I love how you gave some examples from your experience; however, your experiences/examples you gave never took the forefront of whether or not you should live alone or not. There was always optimism and inclusivity for other people who may not have the same exp as you. Great video!

I LOVE living alone in NYC. Moved to Brooklyn from Houston back in 2006, and have only had roommates for a small percentage of that time. The longer you live here and the more connected you get it gets a little bit easier to find apartments. I lucked into one of those amazing deals that I never want to leave. Was originally going to live here with a roommate, and when that arrangement imploded, I decided to make it work by myself and I am so happy. So yes, much more expensive to live here than Texas, but the opportunities here are so much more plentiful, the community feeling of neighborhoods is just beautiful, and not having to have a car is THE BEST.
I was feeling guilty because my grocery budget is substantially higher than yours, but I am saving money by only taking the subway aside from a very rare Uber ride. Anyway, fantastic video as always and I'm crossing my fingers you find a great new apartment!

Like you said its all about lifestyle choice what you wish to gain and conversely are willing to forego.
I will say im super nervous for you its my personal opinion that i would have liked to see you renew your current lease at the slightly higher rate and wait and see what happens with the economic climate i think it would have given you a bit more of a safety net, but to your point living in the city for you is about progression and experience and being pushed to achieve something more i support your decision im rooting for you! i know the old place was stale and a bit toxic for you so hoping the new place breathes a new life into you. Fear is the biggest motivator and above all else you want it so no doubt in my mind you will succeed.
I live in Melbourne Australia. I'm 45 and lived on my own since 2010 and have now bought my own 1 bedroom unit - though to afford this I had to move out about 40km from Melbourne CBD but I mostly WFH and my office is local. I will say though if you're someone who doesn't want kids and don't follow the traditional relationship escalator once you live on your own you'll never share with anyone ever again - I know I won't I LOVE solo living but yes it's expensive and great breakdown of the budget considerations but if you can afford it it's so worth it.
I would be like you in the beginning and be just in my room and not getting out so ya, it is really an eye opener to see that yes having roommates would be a good idea.

I’m 35 and lucky enough to have been able to separate from my partner and move out on my own in Brooklyn. I have in all honesty, enjoyed the experience. It’s a good enough balance of me to work my ass off but then enjoy the perks of living in NYC in my spare time. Never a dull moment
Hey! Newer subscriber. I think you’re selling yourself short on how wide your demographic truly is. I’m a mom of 5 in my 40’s. Never got to live alone. Good for you for doing it. That’s amazing.
