Shop Stair

- I made a stair into the shop from glulam beams I salvaged from the pool house that we demolished to build the shop. The stair consists of two heavy sides connected by 3 stair treads. The stair is on wheels and the idea is that it can be both a stair and a platform to help get heavy machinery and materials in and out of the shop. It can also be a step ladder to get to high storage around the shop.

frank howarth Your videos are awesome as usual, but if it is possible...even better. After watching "BrainPick - Live Q&A with Frank Howarth" from Bob's "I Like To Make Stuff" channel, I can appreciate even more the things you have to go thru to narrate your videos and have them come out so well. I would have never known you have a difficult time speaking if it weren't for that Q&A. Thank you for continuously overcoming the seemingly improbable. Thank you again.
Thank you!
Not only was the project great, but the video production was outstanding.
Thanks again Frank for another gift of creativity from your shop and your mind. Truly appreciated on the East coast.
One of my first jobs out of college while looking for an intern architect position was to rehabilitate glue lam beams. This video brought back many memories of that job and time, thanks Frank!
It's always nice to have a shop helper who won't argue with you.
Thoroughly enjoyable as usual Frank. Always a treat when I'm notified of a new video from you.
Take care
Mike
you , Frank have my most respect out of these wood working channels on youtube. Just pure passion. thank you!!
Thank you for another great episode. It is always a treat when youor videos come up on my feed.
I like the contrasting nose on the treads. Very wise Frank!
Frank another great video, The contrasting trim pieces on the tread edges was a brilliant Idea, it made perfect sense. I''m sure I would have realized it's necessity about two weeks after completing the steps... And Thanks for your art and generosity...
Thanks Reed
Totally! It help visually where's the step edge are from top end as I did had trouble able to view few steps in restaurant last year because it all look too uniform, I could ended up falling over!
Really solid stairs! I like the way you apply design principles to your projects in that they are functional and aesthetically pleasing/balanced. Thanks for the fantastic videos. All the best for 2015.
So nice to notice there is a new 'Frank' video waiting. Love the two of you sanding.
Wow, awesome! The stairs really look like they do belong there! I love how you picked the design for it and how you chose the size for your steps and the dark border for safety reasons. Getting a job done from beginning to the end in this way is adorable!
Great video as always Frank. Heavy duty stairs and movable, just what you needed. Thanks for sharing and take care, David
Thanks. I'm hoping I can move it around to get to the higher storage in the shop.
Great video, Frank! I really liked the idea of putting the contrasting wood on the nose of the tread. Really practical and not something I would have thought of.
i thoroughly enjoyed the shot around 5:10 I like the idea of you helping yourself in the workshop
it would be entertaining to see a wide angle version of this with multiple yours working like an assembly line
excellent work
Frank does this in another video, but I don't remember which one
That would be a neat shot, like a bunch of twins or triplets or whatever. He just needs to make sure not to invite the "evil twin Frank" to help. That guy is a jerk and just might push one of the good Franks through the planer. LOL :)
I was thinking that too. Over lap gets hard so it would have to be well planed out. I could see a video where there is 2 or 3 of me in every shot.
fillg I like the idea of a good frank putting things together and an evil frank taking them apart.
fillg My twin is evil, she just lazes around and watches. True supervisor!
Frank, You are the man. I would not have a clue how to accomplish this. Well done
Thanks Frank. I always enjoy your videos. Even your utility projects are elegant.
Even something as utilitarian as a step and it's still beautiful. Your workshop fills me with all kinds of envy.
Simply beautiful.
I love glulam timber!
Thank you Frank! I enjoyed your surgeon precision work as usual...
Frank with your video editing skills, and all the tools you have in the shop. You should really consider making a kids movie, where the tools have there own life in the night, and make some great stuff while everyone else is sleeping. Like a small series where the tools talk, have fun and find a solution to a problem that human cant solve :)
I know you already made something like that, but not fully. Love your videos.
My wife keep telling me this too.
That would be fun! :D
Frank, your wife sounds like a wise lady :)
YES like a wood work toy story
I agree with this too, great idea
Frank, your videos never fail to inspire. There's always something new; in this case, it was the brilliant inside-the-planet camera perspective and the beauty of your dual-solution rounded mortise and rounded stair treads. Beautiful work!
Very cool Frank! That will work much better than the beams in their previous shape! Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful work Mr. Howart, thanks for sharing.
I really like how you ended up using those massive beams. Would love to see more projects with reclaimed wood like that.
Fantastic use of old beams to make a great set of stairs, nice touch adding the darker strips... glad you didn't stain or paint either. Well done.
It's always a delight to watch your videos. Even my wife enjoys them. Please keep them coming and thank you.
Love it when a project serves more then one purpose. Great job!
Quite a wonderful story. Thank You for sharing.
The video trick in this are so awesome. The stop motion of the wood, you helping you on the planer. So cool!!!
Great video, well shot and excellent editing, a pleasure to watch. Thank you. UK.
Love your editing tricks; it's quite funny to see you helping another you.
Great work on the stairs; lovely wood and they look fantastic.
Thank you Frank... I always look forward to your videos... and you never let me down... Happy New Year...

Fantastic as always, Frank!
Elegant and solid, love it!
Love it. That was cool when two of your self was in the same shot. Nicely done.
Simple yet beautiful!
Always awesome, thanks Frank
Great work! :)
I really enjoy your videos. This is what CZcams is all about - no commercial aspect and just pure informative or educational, but also fun to watch.

Love it. The proportions really suit your shop.
How nice! Great techniques, vision, taste and talent = Frank!
I cant wait to see what will come from all that leftover wood! Keep inspiring.

Great job. love your shop.
Fantastic as always Frank!!
Excellent work as always. Very heavy duty stairs.
Great video and project, thank you for sharing!
Great video as always. Even my three years old son was very interested and repeated it few times.
Beautiful piece! Loved the design, looked easy to make but it is not at all! You made so many difficult cuts and the size of the project required special treatment! Beautiful shots and video once again! Thanks for sharing!
Love the editing style and the staircase.
A very nice and effective stair. The poly finish made the beams looks great.
Good solution for your problem. The wheels is a good idea when you have to get large items in and out of your shop. Thanks I like it.
Always a great show and projects to match, thanks Frank.
Thanks John
Part of what makes your channel so great is that I can see from the description that you are building something mundane like steps, and it's still going to be high quality and pleasing to watch.
Your videos are better than any woodworking TV show.
Frank, love your videos (& your voice)...great job well done!! Thanks!
Amazing workshop and project !
Want the same. Stair. Shop. Tools. And skills.
Great built and video. Thanks.
Great build and good to see you had some help with it.
Real pleasure watching your videos.
Thanks you
Great re-use of material and another beautifully crafted video (of course!).
Wondefull solution, very nice and sturdy stair and an excellent video (as always!).
Thanks a lot!
That is a beastly set of stairs! I really liked the video shot of you adjusting the planer. Great work on repurposing the beams!
Such a great video, definitely addicted to watching more and more, if I didn't have some end of the week work to do! I'm in Portland as well and really appreciate your expertise in cinematic art and woodworking, can't say thank you enough for piquing my old woodworking desire, haven't made anything in about 4-5 years, but these videos are making me want to hop right back into it!
Awesome, as always.
Very nice job.... I like that beefy look of the thick material.
I think your channel is GREAT! deeply satisfying to see projects come together. Thank you!
Great video. I like the mass of the stairs. I need to make a set of short stairs to my loft in my shop to easily handle lumber storage - this is good inspiration.
Troy in PDX
Beautiful set of stairs ,I myself just got so 100 year old lumber from a friend of mine ,2 x 8s ,cant wait to do something with them ,great video !
Those beams are beautiful.
Great job, as always. And that wood is beautyful, good thing you saved it.
I had a baby diaper changing table in my garage that I was using to store tools and stuff, which was given to a friend recently and would be used what it was made for. So, I decided to make a tool table myself. So, I started looking at the internet to see what people are making and their videos. I watched many and then I stumbled across one of yours and ever since I am 'hooked'. I learned bit more about you from your Facebook page and respect you more. You make great things and great videos that are fun to watch and learn. Thank you so much for taking time to make and share all your videos. Please continue....
These videos are so enjoyable to watch. As long as you keep making them, I'll keep watching.
Great job Frank. I love those planks that you used!
Real nice step by step on the steps!
Stationary tools that every WW would envy, but no plunge router... you poor guy! lol Joking of course, great work and video as always.
A long time coming. Well done and thanks for sharing.
Wonderful job Frank!
Super Awesome Frank. Love how you made routed slots for the treads. Sure makes it even more beefy!!
Now that was a great project and the video was great also. You have a well equipped shop to do big projects, Thanks
Usually, I wouldn't comment, but these stairs looks good, solid and sturdy. Sides are kicking. Wish they serve You good and long. Like Your videos, thanks for the effort You make.
Great video, fantastic craftsmanship.
It's always a pleasure to watch you work Frank, a great start to my Sunday morning, belated Happy New Year.
