Lower back pain after lifting a heavy object - What to do about it?

  • Have you ever picked up something heavy and then immediately felt a grabbing sensation in your lower back. If you have, you're not alone. This is a super common occurrence and one of the most common reasons that people give for developing lower back pain.
    .
    Contrary to popular belief, lifting heavy weights is NOT bad for your back. It is actually very protective, given your warm-up, and that you progress your weights appropriately.
    .
    There are actually many people who end up just picking up some really light from the floor, such as a sock, and still end up feeling a sharp, grabbing sensation. It doesn't just happen with heavy objects...
    .
    The good news is that lower back pain from picking things up off the floor is usually muscular in nature and will resolve in 2-6 weeks, given you stay active, don't panic, and have been cleared of any red flags.
    .
    Have you been told that you can never pick something heavy ever again?? I'm curious! Let me know in the comments below!

      @strongsociety  Před 14 dny

      You are right. Some people have such severe spasms that they have a very difficult time even getting out of bed. My recommendation in this scenario is to do a log roll (rolling your whole body as one unit), to get out of bed. Swing your legs off the side and then use your elbow on your bottom arm and your hand on your top arm to push your body up into an upright position. It will hurt, but often times once people can get out of bed and move around a little bit it can loosen things up. Not for everyone of course, but this is more common than not.

    Very good advice to keep moving!
    Thinking it was prudent to rest the strained and irritated muscle I laid down for a few days. The pain only got worse 😣 I was miserable 😖
    Finally asked my friend to pray for me. She did and I immediately I felt fortified, it was great! After repeated prayer the pain disappeared. It was awesome!!
    I happily got up started going around the house doing stuff, then after a while I lay back down again, and guess what? You guessed it, the muscle started to feel tight again.
    Scared that I had lost my healing, and not wanting to bug my friend, I went looking for helpful advice on CZcams. Was hoping to cut the pain off again! Found this video.
    When I heard the good doctor say to keep moving I got up quick and stayed up this time this time. Right away the feeling of wellness returned.

    • @strongsociety
      @strongsociety  Před 11 měsíci

      Yes I believe that this tightness can go away. Are you able to work with a local physio on this?
      Usually my goal for folks like yourself is to change up the routine:
      1. Walk 30-60 minutes per day
      2. Light stretching in morning and evening
      3. Change sitting position/stand more throughout the day
      Usually by incorporating those movements it changes the stress enough to allow for things to calm down.

Also, I stupidly did not warm up first, but bought one of those ab machines that elevate to five levels, did it a few days, no problem, then last week did it on lowest level (it's still quite high) and felt a pain around the right oblique muscle. Sorry for the late reply on this (4 months late!)
      Based on the limited information you provided I would generally agree with your analysis. Whenever someone is having repeated bouts of soreness the next day after lifting (not regular muscle soreness but pain), it's usually a load, or form issue.
      But yes, I wouldnt' classify soreness as an injury. I would classify a fracture, severe pain from a disc herniation, etc. to be an injury.

      Lumbosacral instability is really just a catch-all term that usually means "this guys back hurts." It's not a great diagnosis as it's not a true pathology. A better diagnosis would be "this guys back hurts and we aren't sure what structure it is." But with that all being said -- give it some time, follow the steps in the video, check out some of my other exercise videos for back pain and if it's still no better after 2-6 weeks then not a bad idea to see a physical therapist if you're able to!

      Hey Humair! Sorry for the delay in response! I would recommend reducing weight on the deadlift to a weight that is manageable and does not increase symptoms and then progressively increasing until pain is at a tolerable level.
      Avoid activities or reduce intensity of activities that aggravate symptoms past a tolerable level for a few weeks. This doesn't mean stopping all activity, in fact it's best to stay active with your normal routine, that includes going to the gym. You just want to make sure you're not constantly doing things that flare it up and make it feel worse.
      Hope that helps.

    A 5-year-old cousin of mine was playing and jumped on my back yesterday. Initially, I didn't feel any pain, but after 3-4 hours, I started experiencing pain in the lower part of my back. Since then, I am unable to sit in a squatting position. I'm unsure whether I should consult a doctor or wait for the pain to subside by itself.plz reply

      If pain wasn’t immediate and you didn’t hear a pop or anything it’s likely nothing dangerous. Has this since resolved?

    Does squat and deadlift hurt lower back ?

      No. I actually think it's beneficial if progressed appropriately both physically and mentally.

    It’s been a week and a half and I’ve been taking Advil, using heat patches taking hot baths and heating pad. I wake up in pain and i immediately get in a hot shower to allow the hot water to run on my back and I feel better but it comes back near the end of the day, it’s my lower back. I lifted something heavy the wrong way from the wrong position.

    • @strongsociety
      @strongsociety  Před rokem

      hard to tell from a youtube comment. Usually cracking is pretty normal, however you can also hear a pop from a disc herniation, a fracture, etc. I'd get it checked out by a doctor or physical therapist to be sure and then see how symptoms improve or worsen over time

    I had lifted heavy objects in my gym

    • @strongsociety
      @strongsociety  Před 2 lety

      For most people: rest 2-3 days, get back to the gym, use lower weight to start with, build back up slowly. Most back pain that is muscle related takes 2-6 weeks to resolve and during that time people should get back to normal activity while managing their symptoms

      rehab strategy is going to be different for each person -- would recommend if it hasn't improved in a couple weeks to seek out professional help. Also, testing out various movements to see if there are any that help

    About more than two months ago I lifted something heavy and it induced a slow but painful feeling in the lower back area. After constant heat pad and sprain relief lotion I felt better and then finally relieved however a few days ago I lifted something lighter and in a better form but it induced this pain again and I'm doing the pain relief lotion every night and it's not getting any better.

    Turn to Jesus people he died for your sins, Repent of what the New Testament describes as sin. Believe the gospel obey the teachings of Jesus documented in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Jesus is the only way to be saved, be baptized if you have faith in Jesus then you will live life with him as your example. If you need prayer i'll pray for you. If you want to keep contact with a brother in Christ i’ll keep contact with you. The love of God is beyond our understanding. God bless.
