The stone of destiny on the hill of Tara was graffitied recently. I wouldn’t be surprised if English ancient monuments start getting defaced too.

This is awful but so has been the destruction of all the woodlands associated with HS2 so people could travel 20 mins faster . . I wish we took more care with trees . They don't grow overnight :(

This is just a rumour i've heard but i figured i'd share it. Someone on Reddit has mentioned that a farmer living nearby has been in a near constant state of arguement regarding the parking of visitors to the 🌳 and how they constantly block access to his land. Rumour has it that he got a young relative to cut the tree. Not saying I necessarily believe this but it would explain why a 60 yearold has just been arrested too.

I'm not one of the people calling for blood, but I think your response is an oversimplification disguised as profound.
Things become symbols of larger ideas, and become entwined with various experiences, whether specific and personal or just as a general part of the overall tapestry of life in an area. Responding to that with "you're not allowed to feel that way because there are also other things that exist that you don't have that connection to" is just strange to me.
Sycamore trees can be grafted so some attempt should be made to save it by grafting limbs onto the trunk.
So very sad, because this tree cannot be repaired and any replacement will not be the same.
Yes, the investigation must find the truth and punish the guilty party. If the 16 year old did this he needs to understand why it’s terrible. My problem is, I don’t believe he came up with a stunt like this on his own! Find the adult who encouraged him and gave him the idea! Prosecute them to the fullest! My other problem is all the experts saying the tree can’t be saved. I don’t believe that! Get the expert that says there is a possibility that new growth can come through the center of the stump, not just the roots and give them the time and supplies they need to make the effort! Don’t just clean up the mess and let it go like “Oh well too bad.” No! Make an effort!! Trees fight for their own life every day against wind, storms, having enough or not enough rain or sunshine, pest’s (insects, birds and animals)! Giving up without trying to save this tree would be “Felling it a second time!!!”

Whoever cut it down knew how to cut ,look how straight the lines are? Where has the 16 year old learned this skill? That chainsaw wasn't no 16" or 18" blade , can you get an expert to examine the tree to determine the size of chainsaw used.

Guess that’s not allowed today, hope the pun is here t fits the crime, it never does, say minimum term of 4 months per year of the trees life, wasn’t that tree about 200 years old! This does not just represent a crime against the county , the country and the world but it’s loss will impact certain photographic resources and the ability to earn a living. no is the answer the tree will either grow back with multiple stems ie coppicing or it will die. The National Trust has taken cuttings and a new tree can hopefully be grown from the cuttings

It’s obviously wrong but there are far worse crimes. Speeding is worse. Puts lives at risk. So whatever sentence is imposed it needs to be less than that for speeding, using mobile phone in car etc. if chopping a tree down becomes a more serious crime than endangering human life then our legal system needs a serious overhaul.

Many people have proposed or sprinkled ashes there. It's also one of the most photographed trees in the world. If you can't understand this, then there is something not right with you.

As I mentioned in my op, he may also be pushing an unreasonable ideological position. For example, he may be pushing BLM and treating this tree the same way they treat statues.

There are dozens more examples I could give, each one like those above change the tone, context and meaning of the story. Some may invoke skelticism. Some may involve scorn. Others, compassion.
The fact is, CH4 will never tell us even if they know why (particularly if it's ideologically driven by something they're activists for) because they want to be able to control the narrative and push their agenda.
