  • Thanks for joining in. I’m a big Aeropress fan and was sadly disappointed when I saw no reviews or brew videos with the new Aeropress XL, so I whipped out my shoddy iPhone camera and made a quick video for all you Aeropressers to enjoy!! Forgive my awkwardness, I have actually given my Aeropresses a break for quite a few months until this came in and have been using various Chemex for my brews. I’d love to review more products within the coffee world as well as the culinary world!
    **The brew temperature mentioned in the videos is in Celsius. Bean used was an Ethiopian Yirgacheffe from Lancaster County Coffee Roasters.

    I love my XL. I do a bit more coarse grind, pour in all the water and let it sit 2 mins. Shake and sit 30-45 seconds, shake then press. I like it strong so use more like 40+ grams of coffee. I have tried all the ways and this way the coffee doesn't clump and isn't different than if I screw around with stirring. Easy, fast, fantastic

    This is probably the first proper AeroPress XL review on CZcams! Did you measure the inner diameter of the XL? I know the original Aeropress has 60mm inner diameter.

      Drumroll lol….The inner diameter of the chamber is 2.65 inches or 67.31 mm.

    Great video, I was on the fence between the regular and the XL. I’m definitely going with the XL now. Thanks man!

      It definitely solves a volumetric problem some had with the original. It’s gonna be a battle between the AP XL and the Chemex for my morning brewing

    Thanks for the video! As far as I understand, the goal is the get all of the grinds steeping for the same amount of so that you don't get some grounds steeping longer than others resulting in not as nice a flavour, so my advice for something to try is to shake it more vigorously to really level out the dry coffee and then to really dump the water in faster to get them all wet right away. I saw that you did do a shake to level but you can see the silhouette in the video so you might need a bigger shake and that will help with the grinds getting the same amount of time. The reason for a fine stream of water being helpful is when you have a pourover, it compensates for the cone shape - by going in circles, you're basically trying to keep the grinds wet for the same amount of time, so you need to be able to target the outer part of the coffee that would get exposed more quickly as the water level drops. So you don't need to trickle it around here. After adding the water, you could stir it vigorously to really get the grinds all wet (even the grounds near the bottom). I tend to swirl really hard for several seconds to stir but I could see with the big one, if I buy it, I might wind up stirring with the rod just to make sure. Thanks again. I'm trying to decide whether to get one and this helps a lot!

    I pour mine into a small carafe which swirls it. At least stir!! there is some real variance in strength that is nice to mix

    Thanks for the awesome video. Based on initial impressions of the product woild your recomend it. My wife got into my coffee lately and now im running into the same issue as you,needing to make two aeroressses each morning.Would you say this is a good alternative to that .

    I thought about getting the XL. But I get such a good cup from my regular AP. The only downside is that I have to do the process twice for 2 cups. I can live with that.

    Man that looks nice! Did the taste come out any different than just regular aeropress brewing? Also if u tried using the vacuum seal/plunger steep method, did it work?

    • @Big_Papa_Leonard
      @Big_Papa_Leonard  Před rokem +1

      Definitely needs tweaking when just doubling your standard AP parameters. The taste was not bad at all, just a little more “regular” tasting than my standard 18g/270g brewing ratio of bean to water, missing a couple of those extra notes that are typically present with a satisfactory brewing.

    • @Big_Papa_Leonard
      @Big_Papa_Leonard  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I go back and forth between this and the Chemex. I mainly use Chemex probably 80 percent of the time and AP 20 percent. Or like sometimes when the bean count gets low, I use the AP, instead of wasting a Chemex filter for a less than typical volume. This first test run with the AP XL, I only used one filter but typically double up the filter when using a standard AP. I have since used the double filter in the AP XL and feel I get slightly better results than one filter.

    Great video Matt. I’m the only coffee drinker in my house so don’t need this .. still might get it though, thinking I can make a bigger brew, say with 300g water inverted with the plunger almost halfway up in a ‘safe’ position. Too scared to invert on the standard one!

      I feel ya! I’d definitely wait for a good sale if that were my main interest in scoring an XL, pretty pricey upgrade in my opinion to squeeze a few extra grams or ml of coffee.

    I just ordered the Aeropress XL today. I want to brew enough coffee to fill my 600 ml Zojirushi "thermos" or make a large mug of iced coffee without having to add bypass water.

      Indeed, they are called Monty, made by Fellow and available in a few different sizes. The ones in the video are latte sized (11oz).

    The new company seems to be all about the "money grab". From the things I've read, Alan never offered a larger Aeropress because he was never satisfied with the results. This company basically just makes it twice as big and twice as much as the regular Aeropress. The care that Alan had for the company and product seems to be gone. Also gone...no more Funnel, no more filter holder, 1/3 the amount of filters included etc. Increased prices.. $40, $50, $80 and most likely $100+ for the "premium" version. Based on the "results" from this brew, you can see why Alan was not satisfied with results from larger experimentations. The original Aeropress was a no brainer in regards to recommending. It made great coffee, was easy and cost $25-$30. At the current prices and the continuation of price increases... I probably won't be recommending the Aeropress like I used to. As the prices increase so does the competition of competitive brewers. It really seems the passion for the product is gone from the company now... it's really all about the green...and it shows.

      I’ve liked square one’s hexproof blend. I’ve also had a few passenger roasts that were pleasant. I can’t find something that keeps me off the Ethiopian train though. I enjoy the Lancaster County Coffee Roasters Ethiopian but I find a lot of places that carry LCCR, carry bags that do not have roast dates. Whole Foods LCCR bags have roast dates so I’ve been picking up the freshest beans I can from there. Usually end up with this Ethiopian and then grab something fresh from ReAnimator.

      Nothing with me is ever as simple as it should be lmao! But I have been more of a Chemex user the past year and my AP’s have been sitting so I was satisfied with my process for as rusty as I was.

      Haha good for you for keeping your cool. I mean, if you can taste the difference with all the aeration and extra gobbledygook you do, more power to you. I put 30g of heavy cream and 16g of sugar in my Aeropress recipe of 15g beans with about 250g water so i can't taste the difference with all the extra steps. You do you big guy! Thanks for the review!

      @@johninmontana5847I just like simple processes that work out decently. Today I made iced coffee with my Aeropress: Filled the catch jar of my comandante with Tim Horton beans, ground at 35 clicks, put in the coffee, almost filled with 90° C filtered water, stirred a bit, pressed at 90 seconds, poured in large glass mug and added ice up to the top of the handle. No scale, just thermometer and timer. But there was too much ice, so I'm getting the XL.
