HOW TO REPLACE YOUR ALTERNATOR - 1992-2000 Honda Civic - At home with a basic tool box

Replacing the Alternator on our 1997 Honda DX Hatchback build is a straight forward and "simple" project that requires more time and patience than tools. Depending on your year, you may have to remove the CV Axle to get the old alternator out and the new one in.

If you would have taken the splash guard off and the alternator bracket off it comes right out the bottom past the pan and axle.

Agreed. Something as small as not removing the alternator bracket will cost you alot of extra time and work

It was a pain to take out of such a small space, getting it unbolted and the belt off was super easy. It was getting the alternator out was the difficult part

Thanks for posting this. Man, this is a tough one. I've reviewed a few videos and some people take out the alternator from the top, some from the side, some from the bottom. I'm kind of "intermediate" and I don't think I can do it. Honda engineers messed up this design. You shouldn't have to take your car apart. The best unconfirmed trick I read was removing the master brake cylinder assembly and I think the power steering hose and up through the top.

Hey I’m a bit confused with that ground cable to the body, original alternator does not have that, is that some sort of by pass from the white and red & white and green wire from the green plug?

I'm convinced it isn't possible to replace the top adjustment bolt once it has been removed even if you have small hands there is not enough room to get the threads started and the hole in the alternator is not visible. an air ratchet might work but I think I will have to buy a longer bolt go in through the other side and put a nut on it. If you watch all the videos they leave this part out.
