  • I see a lot of people asking about the road up to Cerro Gordo, so I decided to make a video showing the whole road. I hope this helps answer some questions for people.

    A friend of mine and I did this drive back in April, from 14:30 on was probably the most I've been scared of in a while. Yes, it is wider than what it looks like on camera, but for someone that's afraid of heights, I was really, really scared. lol Thanks for sharing this video.

  • @vintagethunderbirdrepair9426

    Excellent. We will be making that drive later this year and this video is extremely informative so we know what is in store for us. Also, very good camera work so it was very easy to watch. Thanks.

    drove on this road today in a 2019 vw tiguan 2wd. Vehicle did ok and got me to the top and back down but i'd take a awd or 4wd vehicle on my next visit.
    Met Brent on the way, what a great genuine guy!

    I just watched heavydsparks haul a 40,000 gallon tank up there. It was amazing.

    This the best video of the road yet, I don't know about every vehicle but the few I have, need to be calibrated for high altitude, as easy as turning on and off a couple times. This changes the air mixture, this is usually required in both directions. When my kids going camping in areas that might cases issues, we always following certain rules. Before heading off main road CALL anyone to let them know where you are going, estimated time, whos with you and what you are driving. Then check in with them ASAP upon arriving, Even if it's a day trip, we take a survival bag, food, water, light, the normals. If you break down down, stay with the car, stay together. unless you know the area better than your home. If anyone wants a copy of what we put in our ''bug-out packs'' message me. ( I have list for men, women, kids, grandparents also have ones for 'car' and groups or family)

    You know what, dude, you’re awesome! I wanted to head up fat hill to check out this Cerro Gordo place I’d been hearing all about but I really, really, really wanted to know what that road was like going up there, inch x inch, and your video was absolutely perfect! No stupid banter, just good solid info. I did however appreciate you pointing out that big lizard and yeah, what about those damn yankees?… lol So I caught ghost town living a month ago and thought I’d binge all 60+ episodes and see what this place was all about after seeing my girl, Wonderhussy, visit it in one of her awesome CZcams videos. I’m a retiree from San Diego who loves fun, adventure and music. The keywords for my CZcams channel. Plus I love that whole area around Lone Pine. The Alabama Hills ROCK. So I wanted to give you a big ass shout out and thank you for your great video which you only just posted recently. Nice! Happy trails, cowboy

    Wow, going to Cerro Gordo is right up there on my bucket list. It was great to get a small idea of what it is like to drive up there. Thanks so much! The road doesn't look so bad, but then again, going up in the summer instead of the winter is a far better idea. I've driven mountain passes with similar roads in terms of condition here in South Africa in a 2x4 vehicle (Nissan X-Trail) which wasn't ideal and it is quite an eye opener to see hatchbacks and sedans drive on these types of roads. lol. Being able to have a 4x4 with that little bit more control is a huge plus. Hopefully one day I can embark on this journey myself to see the town and meet Brent.

    Nice video! Just drove this the other day in a 2WD manual Mazda CX5. I take your point about tearing up the road (and your tires!) in 2WD, as I could feel my front tires slipping a bit on the steeper washboarded sections this time. (The last time I drove it, it was less washboarded and I don't recall having this problem . . .) I'll also note that this road is a flat-tire hazard: the international geology group I was visiting with had three flats on their rental vehicles in the course of two weeks working along this road. That calculates to about a 10% chance of getting a flat tire for each time you drive the road, if you're driving on passenger tires.

    • @TheAdventureZombie
      @TheAdventureZombie  Před 2 lety +1

      All great points. This road for sure has a reputation for destroying tires, that's why I always recommend to people that they air down to at least 30psi. It helps with more traction, and takes the rocks a little better.

    • @ThomWalbranA1
      @ThomWalbranA1 Před 2 lety

      was it deterimated the cause of the flats? I know HeavyD group found a group where the bead or seal don't hold and they used a small explosion to reseat the tire.

    Do you give Brent of any of the volunteers a heads up that you're coming up? I plan on coming this week with supplies just for a quick visit and hello. Not sure what the etiquette is.

      The town is open daily 9am to 5pm, no call required. Though some days the town needs to be closed, but that is pretty rare.

    I just went up this road on Wednesday at it is not a good road at all. Very steep with blind corners.
    Very tight in many locations so a smaller vehicle is the best Jeep Wrangler is best.
    Not much to see when you get to Cerro Gordo mines. A couple of guys just killing time The place is like driving into someone’s private residence.

      The place is much different from when you came up. Some days we need to have volunteers watch the town, and they don't always do the best at talking to visitors. Sorry that this was your experience.
