  • This is historic first time when the new Borax wagons are taken to the Harmony Borax Works mine in Death Valley where the original Borax wagons are now on display. The Death Valley 49ers celebrate their 70th year and the National Park Service celebrates Death Valley's 25th year as a national park. For 2 days the new wagons are on parade and taken to the Harmony mine, within 200 yards of their ancestral wagons. Come watch the hitching of the 20 mule team and the new Borax wagons as they travel in their ancestral homeland, Death Valley, and stand in the shadow of their ancestors at the Harmony Borax Works mine.

I got a real sense of how difficult this is by watching older TV shows. From an episode on DV Days, I learned how the driver could not even see the leading mules of this 20-mile team on particular curves, and the mules did it themselves.

The guy riding the horse on the left and closest to the wagon is the teamster and he controls the team with one long line. I've never driven 4 but drove 2 every day for years when I worked on a ranch and that's how we fed and cleaned the barns. Brings back great memories.

Just amazing!!! The history. Around that area of Death Valley. Also the parts of Owens Valley. Small towns that line around the once lake of Owens Lake.
My Grandpa worked out in the ore mines back in 1920/30’s. Lived in a small town named Keeler.
Great to hear that history in those parts. In seeing this video brings back stories of my my Dad who would tell us about. Thanks for sharing this history!

  • @johninwaynenewjersey5253

Beautiful homecoming for these wagons, it has to be really satisfying for you to see and you really deserve to puff your chest out a bit. That is some mighty fine craftsmanship on display. The desert is so beautiful and is filled with contradictions. The grays and browns are dotted with bright colors from desert flowers you get hot during the day and frost at night and the vistas are unfathomably huge due to the dry air. You see mountains in the distance, drive half an hour and you are no closer. Great vid and great job!

Hello Mr. Engel, I am a great fan of your videos. So even if I am far away from your hometown I like to follow all of your videos. I grew up in a small village in Austria. My best friends during my childhood have been the blacksmith, the cabinet maker, and the wagon maker. Watching them working, looking how they operated the machinery, used the tools I always asked them a lot of questions. I was fascinated by the work they did. So I am back a little bit in my boy-days when I watch your different projects and videos. They demonstrate the craftmanship which has almost gone away but is based on know-how, experience, knowledge and affinity to the skills our forefathers developed and cultivated. A couple of years ago I had the possibility to visit Furnace Creek, Visitor Center and read about the Borax mine in Death Valley. I just want to end with - keep going! You are doing a great job and - thank you very much - Gerhard A. Wührer

Once again, thanks for hostin. That was a nice little documentary. You must have a great sense of accomplishment (as you should) seeing your “babies” all grown up and ready to do the same work as the originals. Kudos to you and everyone who helps to keep history alive for new generations. 😎👍👏
