As a full-stack developer, I can't say enough how true this is. Yes, the good old Pareto principle. For me, it would be the "perfect time management" skill. Because any other skill I could learn, I learn not because I want to gain the knowledge (at least not tbh), but because I enjoy the learning process.

I think it’s less of “oh I’m at 100 viewers I’ve grown so much” but more of “oh why has my growth stopped so suddenly”, if that makes sense

Glad you brought this up. I found it super demoralizing at first when I saw tiktoker’s with 100k+ followers and then click on their stream and they have 20 viewers 😅
DougDoug is a great example at advanced. I remember watching him with a few hundred and now he's at a steady 2k and growing. He utilizes coding in his streams and there's always something new everytime he streams. He's one of the only people I tend to watch VODs of if I miss his stream.
I wish he would have given more examples of specific streamers that he feels utilized this strategy for growth on twitch.

I can’t honestly think of any tbh. And most big streamers I know of aren’t really authority figures on anything besides having been here first.
Not to sound negative, but this is literally the umpteenth time Harris has recycled this video and I feel I haven’t learned anything new.
I think where the disconnect lies for a lot of people is that not everyone wants to become an authority on anything and just want to grow thru gaming because it would feel like a second job otherwise?
And to be fair, if I became an expert on baked goods, and uploaded top notch CZcams videos on it, I doubt most of those viewers would carry over to twitch/gaming content. The reason I personally believe this is from how I looked at creators. If for example I followed a fitness CZcamsr and they made a twitch for gaming content, I never went to check them out because I didn’t care.
I watched a lot of Jacksepticeye and Markiplier but that WAS for their gaming, but when they didn’t do gaming, I STOPPED watching them. I rarely EVER watch creators if they branch out outside of what I followed them for despite that branched out content matching other interests I have. I just don’t care and I don’t think I’m the only one who does this. I think a lot of us at least subconsciously do this.
Berleezy is an example. I started watching him for his cartoon exposed videos and then he transfered to streaming and gaming videos full time.
I saw this happening with some political streamers; they went from a couple of viewers to hundreds, stagnated for a while then went to around 1k in 2 to 3 years. And it was because they became authorities in their own field (one of them does debates and the other mostly democrat party stuff plus daily pol news).
I'm a former radio guy who is studying up to start streaming and I realized the skill sets are almost the same between streaming online and radio. a major difference is that in radio you're taught to speak to a single person when you broadcast it adds an element of intimacy. Most streamers and youtubers say "hi guys" or "whats up youtube" but you do a really good job of speaking to the viewer and not the collective. good work! 👍

Just like how you've explained most things about streaming, tips about getting views on CZcams are also mostly the same. Good titles and thumbnails. No long intro. No dead air. Good editing. Be funny. B roll maybe. Zoom in and out sometimes.
It's refreshing to have been content for 4 years and realize that I've figured this out just through time and passion. I definitely am lacking with the standard growth strategy but that's down to time and dedication. Great video much better than just saying to develop a niche.

good advice, I think it's important to start off with the standard growth strat but have something in mind for the advanced strat longterm so once you have some sort of platform to stand on you can take your idea and use your leverage

I mostly agree with this, but I don' think you necessarily have to be an expert with whatever you choose to work on as your skill or talent. If you're authentically being you're AND you're not doing the same cookie cutter stuff everyone else is, you can grow! Maybe not to be a huge top creator but you'll have a solid base of your own.
I think that falls into the anomaly section he talked about in the standard exceptions. If you're doing something outside the 99% or just have that AMAZING, GRAVITATING personality, you don't have to be an expert, you just need to share it.
But yea as you said, it also may not be enough to be a top creator because depending on the nature of the unique idea, if its something that people can move on from, its can't get you up there.
This really is a master class on how to succeed as a content creator. Someone's end result may be totally different, and the things that work best for them might differ, but it's just plain guaranteed that if you go through this process and do this stuff you will be more successful than when you started.

I love your channel. It has helped me tremendously. I am still very new to all of this, but homie... hearing this video... and knowing how many hours I have spent pouring over youtube videos and trial and error... its quite validating to hear that becoming a subject matter expert on any one thing, and creating content based off that can be a way forward. I started streaming because I wanted to recreate that sitting on a couch next to a friend vibe... and after streaming for a few months and starting to make youtube videos I found out I LOVE editing videos. I am still quite bad at it, but I know I enjoy that. And the prospect that moving forward, I could possibly make videos rehashing my trial and errors to help the next up-and comer... not only does it sound like fun for me, but it provides hope that it could be something that not only helps someone else, but also increases my sphere of friends/peers. Keep up the great work. Grats on becoming a dad. I know you have trouble sleeping, but I hope you do get some rest.

I know my perspective is skewed, I think it's some frusteration of years of editing in various areas to be beating out 100X over by a "Hi I'm becky, here's a lot of cleavage" first video, trending.
I keep trying to look past it and keep going, but literally hard to see in front with all the "Cute girls" heh
Exactly why I was more excited to get my fiancee streaming on Twitch first. She started in Decemeber and close to 600 followers today. 700 followers on Twitter. Streams like 16 hours a week right now, pushing for full-time. Interested to see what applying these tips in the video will do for her.
I started my twitch channel about 5 months ago. I already have 158 followers. I made affiliate and my average viewers are 5. Usually the last two weeks I have between 5-9 viewers. I watch all of your videos and try to implement most of what you say. It’s working, taking time but working. Thank you

I'm still tiny but starting on video essays, live2d rigging and voice coaching have all definitely helped my content and growth! I'm going to start trying to do more regular original videos on shorts and tiktok soon as well, let's see how it goes!
Does this ultimately equate to shrinking your niche down to its purest form? If so, does that place a ceiling for your growth? For example, I’ve watched the same streamer “challenge run” dark souls for the past 6 months and consistently hover around 215 viewers. At some point, do you have to think “my ‘skill’ has an audience cap”? If you pick the wrong skill to showcase, you could diminish the returns. Genuine questions/thoughts
the idea is to transition once you have an audience, niches exist so that there's somebody there

I think so many streamers want to make content that everyone enjoys, they overlook the value of having a specific audience.
I've learned my content doesn't need to be for everyone, as long as those I make it for thoroughly enjoy it.

One of the first things I learned when creating content (videos/livestreams) on CZcams was to find a niche. Focus one one game or type of game & learn everything about it. As you said, become an expert/authority on it. It helped grow my channel immensely over the last year. The issue now is figuring out how to pivot laterally to another game without hindering growth.
Also, I'd love to hear some more on your ideas for somethin like that. Awesome video as always! 👊
That's what I hate about content creation space now. "Variety" even within a niche itself: art, games, music... if you just switch up a style or don't have the same exact template for everything, people don't engage and move on. It doesn't help that the algorithms almost force heavy curation as well as template of content that it wants. Fit a mold or get pushed to the back.....
@@TerriblyCinemaddict Yeah, the algorithm doesn't favor a creator branching out. I don't know why that is. At least not until you have a massive amount of subscribers. Even then, it's not something heavily pushed it seems.
I don't think it's as much algorithm as it is people. If people sub to you because you're a car mechanic, they probably aren't interested in your tech reviews. True fans will follow you, but most won't when branching out. You basically have to find a new audience if you branch out to something not in your niche. Which is the problem with niching down in the first place. Getting true fans seems to be the trick. But like everything, it's easier said than done.
@@kyleheilig255 True, and it can be made slightly easier when branching out to a similar niche such as a car maintenance to motorcycle maintenance rather than to tech reviews. When you branch out & YT sees something unfamiliar, it'll still push it to your core audience, but if they're not interested, then it's like starting from scratch.

I respect you talking about pretty girls being good at videogames is a good way of growing because is 100% truth, but i don't think many creators would have dare to say it (btw i don't think is a bad thing, on the contrary) and also talking about how we all put ourselves on a social sphere and if you become one of the best in your niche people will look up to you, again something not everyone would dare to say on 2022, and this makes me realize that your advices and videos are the real thing, and not something made just to appeal to people, thanks for being you!

Harris, I've been hearing this for a while but I believe it finally clicked for me here. Right now, I'm a CZcams Reactor that breakdown bars in rap songs and I wanted to set myself apart from the rest. So, I really want to channel more of everything that I value and who I am into these reactions so definitely this will be something I practice and work on for the rest of the year!
Some people like myself enjoy the small amount of people, sometimes it gets too much and maybe you enjoy reading chat as well. It's all a personal preference but what I do think is how thankful I am because of you. Even though I just send my clips of my channel on here, I have a shorts channel now. I wasn't a big fan of Tik Tok because I wanted to grow naturally in some way but with how Twitch does things and even with CZcams my viewership still goes anywhere between 6-25+. Honestly that's fine but I'm feeling like wanting to do more for myself now but still feel comfortable as who I am. I don't want to be this big popular person I just want a really good community of people that likes to help out others.
I see... So now I have to find something I'm good at... xD
Well I gotta say, you have described the process in a way that actually doesn't make me want to jump off of a building when considering developing content, or developing an online presence. I hated the aspects of brand and content creation that focused on the self. It seemed so narcissitic, dedicating so much time to self promotion and development o content that it was off-putting. Yet what you described was merely becoming a SME in some way: Makeup, gaming, science, "interesting, neat things", and that is something doable. Literally discuss your passion and spread the word. It doesn't get any more simple than that, so thank you for the video and the explanation!
I think many get lost in deciding what that one thing to be knowledgeable about is; myself included. Have a love for so many things around content and my genre so it makes is to difficult to pick one thing.
I think you made a good point. Most Advice has been told. „Make Content on other platforms“. Everyone who didn’t made content doesn’t need to watch thousands of videos on “how to grow”. There is no trick in the world that can grow your channel if you don’t even do the bare minimum and post videos like millions of other people do every day. Try to think of a Kickbox Pro: They don’t win tourneys unless they start to train and fight. Of course they can start using tactics and stuff like that, but without the bare minimum, they get nowhere.
My concern with this advice is that it suggests that you'd have to completely change the content you want to make in order to grow. For example: gamers on Twitch want to grow, but the example Harris provides is a creator making robotics and programming videos. That's far from the gaming content that I think a vast number of people are making on Twitch. Therefore we are still left wondering how we can apply this advice to the content we are currently wanting to make, without having to completely change it.

Loved the video. Would have only been more valuable if you included some concrete examples to form frame of what all could be considered a valid skill. For example I didn't expect just knowing your way around certain software can already be enough to be very valuable and will cement a specialist role already.

This is actually sometime I notice alot on twitch. They sit in front of a camera and do whatever. I sadly do this too. One reason why I do stream events is to show something unique instead of just sitting and staring at a screen. I need to get back on CZcams.

Maybe dial back the AF Transition Speed settings on your camera Harris. The AF zipping back and forward as you lean closer and further away is a little distracting.

Ray William Johnson's content didn't die due to lack of interest, but because he retired as the host of =3 and the new hosts couldn't keep it going. Considering that, I'd say his personality was a pretty big part of it. He mostly quit making content after that, until the past few years where he's made a big comeback on YT Shorts and TikTok (which you mentioned).

I don’t even average 10-15 viewers, I started streaming last Summer. I’m at more than 2400 Twitch followers, 2 out of 3 criteria points to mak Partner. But lately I don’t average that many viewers.
