  • After a long period of coldness, the heat somehow draws all the living from the hidden winter shelter. Spring is in the mountains. Everything is clean and fresh. Natural beauty of irresistible colors. A day that one can only wish to, have snatched the serpent out even though the snow has not yet melted. As cold, wind and storm protects the mountain in winter, nature seems to have created a snake venom that guards it in the summer. Viper is the most common and most deadly snake in this area. Although amazed at the nature, man should always be aware of the presence of such creature. Care is never enough. Regardless of the pretty coolness I used to encounter it in December even for rainy days.
Nose-horned Viper (Vipera ammodytes) is a venomous viper species found in southern Europe and parts of the Middle East. It is reputed to be the most dangerous of the European vipers due to its large size, long fangs (up to 11 mm) and high venom toxicity. Usually measure less than 80 cm. The most distinctive characteristic is a single "horn" on the snout, The tongue is usually black. Both sexes have a zig-zag dorsal stripe set against a lighter background. This species is listed as strictly protected. It prefers dry rocky habitats, hillsides with sparse vegetation. This is likely the most dangerous snake to be found in Europe. Humans respond rapidly to this venom, as do mice and birds. The venom can be quite toxic with blood coagulant properties, Bites promote symptoms typical of viperid envenomation such as pain, swelling and discoloration, all of which may be immediate. There are also reports of dizziness and tingling. V. ammodytes venom is used in the production of antivenin for the bite of other European vipers This species is listed as strictly protected under the Berne Convention.
Plijen ubija otrovnim ugrizom.
Velebit, Hrvatska).

A formidable snake that seems to be able to hide anywhere, in leaves and trees and for the unsuspecting hiker, it is so well camouflaged to be nearly invisible, all the more dangerous. One would not like to tread anywhere near it or on it.
Just beautiful, I imagine, coming across a bunch of early spring flowers. We certainly don't have them here in Quebec, but in my Rocky Mountain Wildflowers, I think they are called Pasqueflowers. But the bird is simply beautiful. Thank you, dear Pavle, for again showing us the beauty that lies in the Velebit mountains.

I am glad to hear from you again. Looks the snow is melting as you noticed thou it is far from real heat what vipers would like. Perhaps they are a bit slowed down when moving for the heat is all they need to be in their top condition. Here it is quite well known that the rocky areas are where every one can expect them. Many people simply avoid such places while others got used on them. Accidents are rare but it seems there will be more in the future. Those modern mostly young visitors come because of so called trail running ... I have seen how lightly dressed they are, in shorts, naked feet and light footwear. They use exactly that viper's environment.. The same with mountain cyclists. Every one visiting the area risks his life but them, they should be much more aware of that. I, at least wear proper shoes and do not push my hands in front when I go to sit for to rest. Vipers are active by night , too even during quite fresh and rainy days. I have seen them. There were "almost accidents" in my own experience as I remember but those were just lessons for me to help me realize how to behave in the wild. Tourists really need to be cautious as much as possible. The consequences can be really fatal just because help can't reach in time. The Nose-horned viper is, just as gray wolf, brown bear, lynx, eagle ... simply the symbols of wilderness, especially this mountain and this is their only home. Ours is to respect that and get used on their presence. What would the wild be like without them all.
Thank you for the comment my dear. Hope you are enjoying the sun as we do here in my country. YWM.

I was just thinking how this sentence could be the same for example as a comment under the video with people on the central square in any town in Spring.
Even there are new "vipers" each year among people that behave the same.
Ha , ha. Joke ... wilderness is something different, indeed. Rules need not to be written but are highly respected. We should be well aware of that.

    HelloPavle,
This video is very interesting, you mix the beauty of spring and the beautiful flowers that bloom when the winter fades, with the dangerous viper that wakes up when the days get hot and the snake leaves its winter shelter under rocks or holes in the ground and goes out on the mountain for a walk; The reptile is well camouflaged between the rocks and the branches, it is almost invisible on the ground when it remains still, becoming a danger for its prey, or for non-attentive or inexperienced hikers. In America we have some dangerous cousins of this viper like the rattlesnake, to whom I have had some encounters in my walks on the mountain, no consequences fortunately.
Congratulations for this artistic (flowers) and informative (viper) video.
Best regards and a big hug, your friend from México, Francisco

You just recognized my real intention ... to warn visitors that nature guards itself on a very special way. Viper is put to keep people away from touching those flowers. We know that all the herbs and plants show the colors to attract insects and make plant propagation possible. The viper is in fact quite often seen creature and I got well used to it. It has be respected the same way as all other living creatures in the area. What a wilderness it would be without it!?
At the moment it is extremely hot in my country ... the heat came far too eary for this year. It is even hard to concentrate to editing something for new uploads and use the time that way. Climate changed, indeed. I canceled my plans to visit those forests for at least after first refreshment or some rain to fall before. It's hard to withstand such hot and humid days here ... I bellieve it would be better up in those heights because of wind but sudden showers and storm,s are not pleasant especially if I plan to spend nights in my sleeping bag.
The feeling of having to wait for the right moment must be respected.
I am very glad you like my video ... and thanks for stopping by.
Best regards. (Your friend from Croatia)

It's a beautiful creature and all part of natures bounty. But it would be nice if they did not blend in so well. I was amazed by the size. What is their striking distance? Oh well, they keep wanderers alert. Spring is beautiful there. So many different flowers than we have here. Great to see. Thanks Pavle!

For me, It was always great to encounter that creature. This snake is like a symbol of that rocky area. As I described the attacks are extremely rare ... in fact accidentally one can step onto it or grab it by hand while climbing the rocks. Modern so called sporting-visitors should have to take care about it a lot. I have seen people amazed by all those beautiful flowers ... not aware of the vipers at all. This is what wilderness is.
Thank you my friend for stopping by.

@@agneslee5561 There in the wild it is not that bad so that one should be scared, cautious that much so that it would be impossible to enjoy.
Vipers do not attack, they rarely use their poison I would say only if suddenly endangered. Their poison uses to be a weapon for them to get their prey.
Besides, vipers can feel us from enough distance and hide away. I remember that I stepped right onto the viper that even couldn't run away from me because when ever I jumped to get rid of it in fact I felt on it again. I had my hiking shoes and simple jeans pants what viper's teeth could not pass through. The truth is that that adventure left a sort of panic on me and that lasted a few days even. In fact I wasn't sure whether I was bitten ore not. It is because I was not that experienced as I am now. Animals are much more capable to notice everything around and avoid any possible danger much easier than we could.

Jedini dom.
