      Andy this is ALL very good, but don’t you think it is too much information to learn at once?😅 it is not al all confusing, don’t get me wrong, but it is way too much info to digest (for me, of course). Thanks anyway for your efforts, it is much appreciated!

    I'm not a native speaker but I lived in China for a few years and in my experience, most people don't use nihao very often. Only when trying to get someone's attention, like when calling a waiter.
    When greeting someone (at least in a more informal setting) most people that I met simply said 哈喽 (ha1lou2) i.e. hello.
    Also, baibai is more common than zaijian 😂

    I am so happy that I found your channel. I know some "real Chinese" from my Chinese fiance but I am preparing to take the HSK tests in the future (plus he is planning to move back to China at one point) and it always feels weird that I have to learn and memorize things that are either not authentic, incorrect or old-fashioned. So I am always juggling between what I know to be authentic and what I need to know for academic reasons.
    I studied (and plant to continue studying) in the language teaching field so I know that there is a big difference between academic requirements and the everyday language. I always feel like revolutionizing language learning when I can call myself a professional in the future. 😂

    My partner is Chinese (mainland, Mandarin speaker), and I am German. Some of the similarities in phraseology are most interesting. "Have you eaten yet?" is a greeting used in both countries. In Germany, we have countless greetings, depending on familiarity, the occasion and the region; for example, coming from Niedersachsen, I usually greet friends with "Moin". Also, unless someone is close or related, one would never say "How are you?", because if this question is posed to someone who is not particularly close, it would be dismissed as insincere. Vielen dank for a very interesting video!

LOL! Seriously, thank you for this video. It's one thing to study for HSK, but living in the Fenway of Boston, MA with a HUGE HUGE student and immigrant/ABC population, it's very different than what's taught. This video broke a barrier for me (I hope) and shows me a path to study things a bit more naturally. Also, I like your use of parentheses and color-coding. 5:01 ‘have you eaten?’ Or ‘kumain ka na ba?’ Can be used as a greeting to someone close or dear to you. When a spouse meets his/her other half after a few hours of not seeing each other, instead of saying ‘how are you’, they can say ‘Kumain ka na ba?’ as a gesture of love and caring for each other. This is a Filipino trait. 🇵🇭

    I'm a 1.5 generation Chinese-American and am fluent in Chinese, but I find it interesting to hear it explained, because when you've only learned through exposure, you aren't actually aware of the details of the language. You just know how to use it. Personally, when I greet someone I know in an informal setting, I usually just nod at them and say "eh" in a deliberate tone, and then if I want a longer conversation, I will follow up the "eh" with one of the other greetings mentioned. In my experience, confirming what you think the other person is going to do, and asking how they've been lately, are probably the more common ones. I'm not sure I qualify asking if someone has eaten as a "greeting." To me, asking whether you've eaten is more of a way of asking if I'm inconveniencing you. Like, if they haven't eaten, that's my sign to either keep the conversation short (so they can go eat) or to invite them to join us to eat (if it's convenient for everyone).

    • @holymackerel6200
      @holymackerel6200 Před 10 měsíci +2

      I'm from Singapore where Mandarin and Chinese dialects are commonly spoken everywhere. Mandarin was adopted as one of our official languages only after we became an independent nation in 1965. Before that most people spoke their native dialects depending which part of China their ancestors came from.
      It was common for the older generations to ask, as a greeting, "吃饱没?" Literally, have you eaten till full? I remember this used as a standard greeting in Hokkien (from Fujian province) and Cantonese (from Guangdong province). The Chinese here mostly came originally or descended from impoverished parts of China, where getting enough to eat was uncertain. Getting a good meal was a blessing. Hence the focus on getting a full meal.
      The immigrants typically were not well-educated people. Mandarin was taught in schools and promoted later through films and TV dramas.
      Today, it has changed, both in China and Singapore. And we have gone past the stage of basic survival for most people. So only elderly people who still speak dialects may continue to use this greeting. They are not really asking if you had enough to eat. The greeting just reflects the age-old preoccupation with hunger and poverty that seems to be stamped on to the Chinese psyche.
      I am the third generation born and bred here. I have never known intense poverty and hunger and I'm very grateful for it. So when I hear greetings like this, I am reminded what a struggle it was for my ancestors.

      Actually, as a native English speaker I think "so-so" is a fine way to reply to "how are you?" But be careful because sometimes people assume anything other than a response like "I'm doing great!" suggests not-so-good, so when someone says 'so-so' the other person often assumes that something is wrong.

    I'm sorry, this is quite random, but what does "ta bian qian shan wan shui, feng yu wu zu" means? It was written on the handmade muffler my crush gift me. The only thing I know is qian, which means thousand, I think. The translation on the internet was pure nonsense. Did she friendzoned me thousand of time or what? :')
